FAQ for HardiePanelâ„¢ compressed sheetWhen direct tiling a HardiePanel™ compressed deck can tiles be fixed over the sheet joints? No, movement joints must be continued through the tiles. Can I space my joists greater than 600mm centres on my HardiePanel™ compressed deck to reduce the cost of framing? No, 600mm centres is the maximum centres. Please consult the technical manual for further details on framing requirements. Can I paint over HardiePanel™ compressed when used in a deck application? Speak to a coating manufacturer for the recommendations on the best product for this application. What is the fall of the HardiePanel™ compressed deck surface to facilitate drainage? The fall of the deck must be at least 1 in 100. What is the maximum steel joist thickness we recommend in a HardiePanel™ compressed sheet deck? The base metal thickness of steel joist must not exceed 2.5 mm. Refer to the Fixing Manual for more information. When installing a HardiePanel™ compressed sheet water resistant deck what should be done to framing when timber joists are used? Flood the tops of the joists with a wood preservative and use an appropriate flashing material 50 mm wider than the joist width. What is the maximum canter lever distance at the sheet edge in a HardiePanel™ compressed deck? A distance between 50 mm and 100 mm is allowed. My HardiePanel™ compressed sheet deck is 4m wide. Can I use a liquid applied membrane to waterproof it? James Hardie would recommend on decks wider than 3.5m, that a sheet membrane system be used under a floating mortar bed. I am constructing a large HardiePanel™ compressed sheet and do not want to cut tiles at every sheet joint. Each sheet joint is constructed like a control joint. If you tile across these, the tile will eventually crack or lift up. The floating mortar bed system may be more suitable as control joints are required at every 4.5m. I am going to waterproof my HardiePanel™ compressed sheet deck. Am I still required to install flashing over the joists? Flashing over the floor joists is only recommended on water resistant decks. It is not necessary on a fully waterproof deck and may be omitted. I am replacing a deck which has rotted with HardiePanel™ compressed sheet. How to I ensure my joists do not rot this time? By flashing the joists, creating a 1:100 fall away from the building and by the installation of a drip strip at the edge of the deck will minmise this from occurring again. I am laying the HardiePanel™ compressed sheets across the joists. Do I have to install trimmers to support the long edges of the sheet? All sheet edges are required to be supported, running sheets along the joists requires less trimming. |
