An interior architect shows how to use different materials on the exterior

Using a mix of cladding adds richness to home designs and streetscapes. James Hardie sat down for a virtual coffee with <a href="https://gilchristhomes.com.au/">Gilchrist Homes</a> to find out their secret for getting the mixed cladding look right. The focus of our discussion was their head-turning, award winning Elwood Display home in Wodonga on the border of NSW and Victoria, which was designed in collaboration with <a href="https://www.ausplandesign.com.au/">Ausplan Group</a> for their client <a href="https://greenesthouse.com.au/about">Greenest House.</a>
It’s important to work with the Built Form Design Guidelines provided by the council or developer. Typically, they don’t want insipid home designs. They want interesting house designs in a style that suits the suburb and makes a positive contribution to the street. Inviting streetscapes are good for the wellbeing of communities and house prices.

<a href="https://gilchristhomes.com.au/">Gilchrist Homes</a> build custom homes which aim to achieve a perfect balance of good design, energy efficiency and functionality.
Their approach to design is unique but effective. Leah Gilchrist, from the family business, is an interior architect. Naturally she’s responsible for beautiful and well thought-out the living spaces. Surprisingly though, she has a big influence on the exterior and tends to challenge convention.

Large windows flood the living area with light. They provide passive heating as the winter sun warms the concrete floor.
Interior design works in layers. Start with a neutral wall colour and then bring in shape with interesting furniture. Then bring in texture with a rug or fabrics. Then bring in pops of colour with styling items like cushions.

With high walls, interesting angles and large openings it makes sense to get a render-like finish from <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/hardie-fine-texture-cladding">Hardie™ Fine Texture Cladding</a> than cumbersome masonry.
Leah’s approach exteriors cladding seems to involve layers too. Take the indoor-outdoor entertaining area for example. To make the wall a simple canvas, <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/hardie-fine-texture-cladding">Hardie™ Fine Texture Cladding</a> was used first. It has a subtle render texture which diffuses light giving the grey paint a contemporary matte finish. It’s calming and helps put emphasis on the shape of the building. To add texture and visual warmth, vertical joint timber cladding has been used. Then there’s the dominant feature, the sculptural metalwork. This will look even more spectacular when the deciduous vine grows up the horizontal wires to the roof peak and shades the outdoor area in summer.

The cladding has a fine render texture embedded in the fibre cement to do away with the problems traditional cement render has.
Matt Gilchrist, Managing Director of <a href="https://gilchristhomes.com.au/">Gilchrist Homes</a>, says “While people love the look of our Elwood Display home, it’s rare we build the same house twice. We’re a custom home builder and we listen to the homeowner and build to the story of their family and contribute our expertise in design and energy efficiency”.
The Elwood Display home achieves a remarkable energy star rating of 7.7 with standard insulation and single layer glass. The Albury Wodonga area has hot summers and freezing winters which help demonstrate the thermal performance of the design.

Dark colours don’t need to be avoided. The durable fibre cement Hardie Cladding is installed on a cavity with a reflective foil weather barrier to reduce heat transfer.

Single storey homes are cheaper and faster to build than double storey homes, but they require more land. People commonly choose single story homes for their life stage or accessibility. Those building forever homes, elderly and families with young children want designs without stairs. Single level homes can be good for keeping families connected with each other, as opposed to double storey homes where children have their own living area upstairs.

Heating and cooling is also cheaper and more efficient with a single storey home. They’re easier to clean too. Vacuum cleaners don’t ‘have to be dragged up and down stairs and gutters aren’t dangerously high. Single storey homes have a smaller façade area and risk making an unimaginative contribution to streetscapes. Especially with the narrowing of lot sizes. The problem is that double garages dominate and little can be done with just the front room and entry way that remain. Dull designs have little more than a hip roof, rendered walls and a portico over the entry way.

More adventurous homes adopt a distinct styles such as:

- The [Hamptons look](https://www.jameshardie.com.au/hamptons-look). A gable roof, weatherboard cladding, front veranda and ornate sconce lighting and fretwork.
- Mid century modern look. A flat or gently sloping skillion or gable roof with large windows and some natural textures or a pop of daring colour.
- Modern coastal look. A shed or skillion roof with a single slope with a large protective overhang, weatherboards and veranda prompting and outdoor lifestyle.
- Scandi barn look. This bold style combines a steeply pitched gable roof, timber-style fibre cement cladding and black and white colour palette.

Commissioned to create a forever home for a young family, which contrasted rather than clashed with Bulimba’s streetscape of traditional colonial and Queenslander dwellings, the collaboration between Big House Little House and JH Dixon Builders resulted in the delivery of a lush dwelling which marries traditional features with sub-tropical style.
Situated on an 818m2 double block, the triple gabled, two-storey home boasts three discrete living areas, four double bedrooms, five bathrooms, a home office, wine cellar, mud room – an alcove off the entrance hall where coats and boots can be stored – and a double garage.
The entertainer’s kitchen includes an island bench which seats 10, butler’s pantry and a full complement of top-line European appliances, including a double oven.
Oversized bi-fold doors lead to a lavishly appointed outdoor kitchen and covered entertainment deck which flows out to a sparkling lap pool and grassy play area.
Hardwood stairs and polished floors in spotted gum contribute to the home’s traditional vibe, while Japanese-style sliding doors and marble walls feature in two of the bathrooms.

The Bulimba house has become both a showpiece of the street and a haven for the happy family who are fortunate to call it home.It’s the optimum outcome for a project which was more than two years in the making, Brumby says.“Using Scyon Linea weatherboards enabled us to deliver a contemporary, modern design which is sensitive to the building character code of this beautiful pocket of the city,” he says.“Would I recommend it to other clients looking for a flawless finish? The ‘Nailed The Dream Home’ Look

<h2 id="freshstartclassiclook">FRESH START, CLASSIC LOOK</h2>
Buying a home, old or new, in Sydney’s Northern Beaches is well outside the budget for many young families. When accountant Mika spotted land for sale in Church Point, he was quick to snap it up, even though it was something of a surprise for his wife Milly, a teacher.

 “I bought the block of land and Milly wasn’t sure at first,” says Mika. “But with the home we have now, she definitely doesn’t want to leave.”

Inspired by older classic homes in the area, the couple mixed it up with Hamptons style colours and features to create a home that has a timeless elegance and fresh coastal feel. And it’s spacious enough for their growing family. When they bought the land, the couple had a 1 year-old and were expecting their next child. So having plenty of space was an important priority too.

<h2 id="abreezetobuildwith">A BREEZE TO BUILD WITH</h2>
With <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/scyon-linea-weatherboard">Linea™</a> Boards, we got the look we wanted and our builder said the product is easy to use, cuts cleanly, doesn’t shrink and is a breeze to paint. This is definitely our dream home.
Their builder chose LineaTM weatherboard as the primary material for the project, because it has the right look and was so easy to use. Linea is a fibre cement board offering a weatherboard effect that’s remarkably authentic, thanks to it’s extra thick 16mm profile. It’s highly resistant to fire and termites and won’t shrink or warp as real timber boards do.
“Everything about the project started from the Linea board,” says Mika. “Our builder likes it because it’s quick to install, cuts cleanly, doesn’t shrink and paints well. And while the appearance of Linea is excellent, it actually brought us in under budget. For the look you’re getting, it’s fantastic value.”

Milly and Mika aren’t the only ones who appreciate the striking good looks of their new home. Their property is well known throughout the neighbourhood and attracts plenty of interest. According to Milly, lots of people stop by to ask about the build and the colours they’ve used.

"Everyone around here knows the house when we describe it,” says Mika. “People think we’re rich because of the the look that we’ve got and I think they’d be surprised to learn what we paid for it.” So while they might have started their new home project with mixed feelings, the couple are 100% proud of where they now live. It’s a genuine dream home for Milly, Mika and their kids. “A lot of people our age have to compromise on where they’re living and the style of home they’ve got,” says Mika. “We feel that we haven’t had to do that at all.”
