The home, designed by Big House Little House makes extensive use of Scyon™ Linea™ for the home’s external façade. Concrete based cladding which provides a similar look and finish to timber weatherboards, the material is termite and fire resistant and requires minimal maintenance.
Scyon Linea weatherboards are easily painted and are not prone to shrinkage or swelling. The material is a popular façade choice for country cottages, beach houses and contemporary dwellings where a traditional look is sought.
“It’s a quality product which weathers much better than old school timber boards – there’s no warping or cupping,” says director Chris Brumby. “For this project, we chose it primarily for cosmetic reasons – it looks a million bucks!” – but for clients who are planning to stay in a home long term, the value proposition of minimal maintenance is pretty hard to walk past.

Commissioned to create a forever home for a young family, which contrasted rather than clashed with Bulimba’s streetscape of traditional colonial and Queenslander dwellings, the collaboration between Big House Little House and JH Dixon Builders resulted in the delivery of a lush dwelling which marries traditional features with sub-tropical style.
Situated on an 818m2 double block, the triple gabled, two-storey home boasts three discrete living areas, four double bedrooms, five bathrooms, a home office, wine cellar, mud room – an alcove off the entrance hall where coats and boots can be stored – and a double garage.
The entertainer’s kitchen includes an island bench which seats 10, butler’s pantry and a full complement of top-line European appliances, including a double oven.
Oversized bi-fold doors lead to a lavishly appointed outdoor kitchen and covered entertainment deck which flows out to a sparkling lap pool and grassy play area.
Hardwood stairs and polished floors in spotted gum contribute to the home’s traditional vibe, while Japanese-style sliding doors and marble walls feature in two of the bathrooms.
