Q: HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE HAMPTONS STYLE?

BUILDER

Designing and building a Hamptons-style home is all about the details, from the exterior angles to the interior décor. It is an elegant yet relaxed, sophisticated yet coastal-cool style, which radiates warmth and cosiness. It’s no wonder the Hamptons look is fast becoming one of Australia’s most popular design styles.

DESIGNER

Think white walls, white timber furniture and accent colours of blue and beige. I find there are two distinctive styles that can be considered ‘Hamptons’. The first is a more traditional style, with a contrast of dark hardwood floors and white walls with accents of black. The other style is my personal favourite, which is less formal and more coastal. This consists of light timber floors, natural jute rugs, linen upholstery, numerous fresh flowers and a beautiful fiddle-leaf-fig as a feature plant.

Q: WHAT ELEMENTS DO YOU CONSIDER WHEN DESIGNING A HAMPTONS HOME?

BUILDER

The Hamptons have become synonymous with style, class and elegance, influenced by the luxurious yet laidback feel of the area. The floor plan of the home is therefore designed around connecting the indoors with the out, harnessing water or pool views for that distinctly coastal feel.

This look is all about classic detailing, meaning our attention to detail with the front and back gables, proportions, balustrade and feature windows are all critical. We also work with our clients to find the perfect variation of the Hamptons style for their home, whether it’s a bit more modern or sticks to the traditional.

DESIGNER

On the exterior, weatherboard cladding is an essential design feature that really encompasses the Hamptons look. The clean, horizontal lines give the home a coastal or country feel, depending where you live. A soft colour palette on walls, consisting mainly of whites and light is a must, and beautiful French doors or plantation shutters should be peppered throughout the exterior, giving that understated sophistication and much-loved coastal feel.

Q: HOW CAN YOU ADAPT THE HAMPTONS LOOK FOR AN AUSTRALIAN HOME?

BUILDER

When designing a Hampton’s home in Australia we often need to consider Local Council design codes, which for some areas requires a more traditional façade. To comply with these codes we like to incorporate features such as verandas, ornate external and timber look materials including the finishing touches of a white picket fence. Adapting the style for an Australian climate is also crucial, which we achieve using timber-look cladding like Sycon Linea and installing windows with glazing bars and transoms.

DESIGNER

For me the Australian version of a Hampton style home is less formal and more laid back, but still very much sophisticated. It’s all about open plan spaces that are family friendly. Often bright and breezy these living areas open onto large decks and entertaining areas- after all, Australia’s love a BBQ!

Q: WHAT ISSUES ARE PEOPLE OFTEN NOT AWARE OF WHEN THEY COME TO YOU WITH THEIR VISION?

BUILDER

As previously mentioned, a lot of clients are not aware of their local design codes, which can sometimes have an impact on their original design. However, we do find that Hamptons homes are often welcomed by locals with open arms and we always work with our clients to make sure they can still have their dream home
