The standard 70x35mm dimensions of the <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/accessory/Hardie-Structural-Batten">Hardie™ Structural Batten</a> suit common frame sizes and are in line with standard structural timber. This means window and door reveals can also be standard sizes, which can help to reduce on-the-wall costs and streamline the entire project. The cladding can then be fixed to the batten using standard fibre cement cladding fasteners with options for a concealed fix. The standard size of the batten also allows for design diversity, enabling easy transition to other cladding options. 
James Hardie has also optimised the <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/hardie-oblique-cladding">Hardie™ Oblique™ Cladding</a> and <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/scyon-stria-cladding">Stria™ Cladding</a> board lengths, which are now available in 3000mm. To accommodate the trend of larger ceiling heights in modern Australian homes, a 3000mm board length for vertical cladding provides greater coverage to help reduce wastage on site, and therefore reduce costs.

Stria™ Cladding delivers a contemporary finish and savings on costs and time

This residential project looked towards Hardie™ fibre cement products to add a modern extension to an old period house to transform the way the homeowners lived.
The brief to builder Peter Johnstone from <a href="http://drakebuild.com.au/">DrakeBuild</a> was to build a modern extension on an old period home to make a beautiful, functional family home that offered space for entertainment and to accommodate family living. Adding visual interest to the outdoor space was also high on the homeowner’s wish list, as the new exterior walls formed the backdrop to the outdoor entertainment space. 
In a considered approach, a tired 1930’s Californian Bungalow has been revitalised to retain the heritage front of the home and a new modernised extension to the rear, in what is now a ‘forever home’.

In building the modern extension, the exterior building material was key to the successful integration of the original home and the new extension. In contrast to the heritage front façade, <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/scyon-stria-cladding">Stria™ Cladding</a> by James Hardie with its deep grooves and strong vertical lines introduced design versatility and contemporary looks to the addition. 
“To bring to life the contemporary style it was a unanimous decision by the homeowner and architect, Lyndall Williams of <a href="https://www.my-architect.com.au/">My Architect</a>, that Stria™ Cladding was used on the home. From a builder’s perspective, we always use Hardie™ products when it comes to <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/fibre-cement">fibre cement cladding</a>, as it’s a superior product to anything else on the market and provides building cost efficiencies,” says Peter.

“Using Stria™ Cladding 405mm provided extensive benefits not only to the homeowner in regards to design possibilities and long term durability, but also to the building team in terms of ease of use and speed to complete the project and let the homeowners enjoy their new house,” says Peter.

 “Speed of building is always a consideration as homeowners are keen to move in and start living. Using Stria™ Cladding streamlined the build, allowing for a more efficient installation and enabled us to stay on schedule and budget,” Peter explains.

Peter notes that it only took two workers a few days to install all the Stria™ Cladding. “From a business perspective the ease of installation is such a huge advantage. The wide cladding sheets cover more area, making installation quicker, and the ‘secret fixing’ with screws being hidden behind the overlapping sheets, means there’s no holes for the painters to have to fill. Additionally, each panel comes pre-sealed and can be finished simply with two coats of paint in any colour of choice, offering additional time savings with painters. It’s a smart business choice to use a product such as Stria.”
“Using Hardie™ products and accessories makes the job quicker, as they all work together hand in hand. On this project we used Stria™ aluminium internal and external corner flashings, Hardie™ Blade, Hardie™ Drive Screws and Hardie™ Joint Sealant.” 
Assisting with the build being on time and on budget was local hardware provider, <a href="https://www.parkroad.net.au/">Park Road Timber</a>, who has worked with DrakeBuild for over ten years. Peter says, “Having a reliable supplier is imperative. As part of our team, we really rely on them to educate us on new products on the market as well as sourcing building materials for each project so there are no delays. My rep, Anthony Stephens goes above and beyond to assist us.”
“This project was extremely satisfying,” says Peter. “The homeowner’s respect for the bungalow’s past and desire for a modern extension, sees a marriage of styles. The homeowner is thrilled with how the project turned out. I love the rear extension, the high ceilings that flowed through to the outside eave that is also lined with <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/scyon-stria-cladding">Stria™ Cladding</a>. Stria™ Cladding allowed us to achieve the <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/modern-look">modern look</a> extension the client was after, as well as, importantly, saving us time and money on the project.”
Peter concludes, “Everything came together perfectly and I really think we not only met but exceeded the brief. With its modern building materials and systems, James Hardie shows how great planning and product can lead to a great business proposition as well.

Ground floor extensions are twice as common as upper floor additions.

Pushing out works only if there’s available yard space. Floor space can be added starting with a slab on flat ground or on pilings on a sloping site. Fibre cement cladding is on-frame allowing the construction of high performance walls with a width of just 100mm saving up to 130mm of floor space compared with brick veneer cladding which needs to sit on a slab.

You don’t have to renovate with the same style or materials as your home was originally designed for. Who want’s more small, stuffy and dark rooms? It’s common to have renovation additions done in a modern materials and in a contemporary style which encourages light, breeze, open plan living and alfresco dining areas. While the front of the home may have a heritage feel the back can be in a modern style. James Hardie cladding products on-frame which prompts opportunities for a modern design. While it’s important not to over-capitalize, you should consider the needs of your family over resale value. Renovate your home so it’s a sanctuary. A safe and warm space to rejuvenate from a busy modern life. Make a place you love to come home to and include some design variation. Building the same as everyone else can actually hurt the resale value.

A true Tuscan treat: the Florence house brings contemporary living to Brisbane

Sitting at the poolside alfresco patio, looking up past the oversized windows at the rooftop terrace set against a brilliant blue sky, you could be anywhere in the world. And that was the brief - to transport a little bit of Italy over to a new Brisbane build, bridging a 16,000 kilometre distance in the process. The response? A new home design that brings the best of Tuscan style conveniently into the heart of the newly named Olympic city.
Produced by <a href="https://www.signaturepropertypartners.com.au/about-1">Signature Property Partners</a> and nicknamed the ‘Florence’, the home is unlike most on the market, with a clear dedication to echoing design of a different time - Renaissance-era Italy, to be exact.&nbsp;
The triple storey home is a stone’s throw from the city in Coorparoo, four kilometres south of the Brisbane CBD, and is designed to emphasise modern, convenient design, through its space and style. Its striking facade uses a mixture of textures, contrasting timber tones to warm up the facade's colour palette with smooth rendering - and 5 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms make it the ultimate in luxurious and modern family living.&nbsp;

Florence house brings contemporary living to Brisbane | BY James Hardie

Let there be light. How Hardie™ Fine Texture Cladding helped transform a 1940s cottage.

Plenty of people scroll through Pinterest looking for inspiration. When Jane spotted a thumb stopping build - a house with a cathedral roof that captured the light, painted a deep black, on her app, she thought “I could build that”. And with her husband Matt, she did.
Her idea seemed worlds away from their 1940s cottage sitting on the side of a Wollongong hill. But she knew that she had to do something drastic, as the cold house was unprotected from the elements. It was on the south side of the hill facing south, and had a large tree on the northern side of the house, which restricted the northern light. The house was uninsulated, with small windows and it would routinely get hit by the cold southerly winds - the perfect storm.
The pair didn’t think that all of those problems could be solved. Then help came in the form of design inspiration, a design and construct builder and new <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/hardie-fine-texture-cladding">Hardie™ Fine Texture Cladding</a>, by James Hardie. The material brought style and durability to the home, as well as enabling the lightweight construction of a soaring roof that allows light to flood in.&nbsp;
<h2 id="howapinterestphotosparkedthedream">How a Pinterest photo sparked the dream</h2>
Jane and Matt had gotten to the point where they just wanted to knock their house down and start again. But after taking a look at the options for new home designs, they felt that demolishing and rebuilding their home would be a waste. It would also go against their desire to make decisions with sustainability in mind.
So they engaged their builder, Nick from <a href="https://spanline.com.au/">Spanline</a> Illawarra, who showed them how a renovation could instead make their Pinterest dreams a reality. “Our builder recommended putting in a steeply pitched roof that could let in as much light as possible, and that was when we introduced us to Hardie Fine Texture Cladding,” remembers Jane. “We fell in love straight away, because it had the style and clean lines that we wanted.”

<h2 id="atransformationthroughtexture">A transformation through texture</h2>
Hardie Fine Texture Cladding is perfect for modern home designs with that more minimalist feel. Compared with the hard lines of some cladding profiles, the pre-textured fibre cement panel adds visual warmth and diffuses light, while bringing subtle focus to the form of the building. According to Jane, it stood out, when compared to other materials, as “the look is so much better than brick, at a lesser price.”&nbsp;
As with all fibre cement products by James Hardie, the Fine Texture cladding is resilient, and designed to last so you can love where you live longer. And that was a key reason behind Jane and Matt’s choice. “It’s durable and resists cracking, which gives us a lot of peace of mind,” says Jane. Hardie Fine Texture cladding is also fire resistant, and can be installed simply by attaching the panels to timber or light gauge steel frames.&nbsp;
The rapid speed of installation makes it a favourite of builders, which is why it was the first choice for Spanline when recommending products. Jane and Matt chose Domino by Dulux for the exterior, which was quick and easy to paint, with fibre cement holding paint for longer than brick or wood. The cladding is also resistant to warping or rotting, making it ideal for Australian conditions.

When figuring out the design for the exterior, Jane and Matt wanted to make a statement. “We didn’t want anything average or boring,” Jane says. “We definitely wanted something bold and modern.” Plus, they wanted to capture all seasons to make the most of the light, especially through the northern sun in winter.&nbsp;
The fine rendered texture of the Hardie Fine Texture Cladding meant that they could achieve, a solid-looking modern home design without the weight or hassle of brickwork. The cladding is likely to be lower maintenance than other cladding that needs to be hand-rendered meaning the render style will stay looking good for many years to come.&nbsp;
Jane and Matt worked with Spanline to design the dramatic vertical aluminium screen, which wraps around the upper windows, contrasting and breaking up the expanse of cladding. The pared-back look is subtly softened with the use of uplights, while still remaining a focal point of design, helping the eye-catching house to build its street appeal.&nbsp;
Another key element of the Hardie Fine Texture Cladding that was crucial to Jane and Matt’s renovation was its ability to diffuse light and give a modern matte appearance to the Domino paint colour.&nbsp;

The challenge for development and construction business, Shoredan Projects, was balancing the practicality and sophistication of the home while keeping within budget in a premium location.
