Linea™ Weatherboard transforms a dated home into beautiful modern farmhouse

A semi-rural home situated on three acres of rolling paddocks with mountain views in Hobart was transformed into a modern country farmhouse. The design inspiration came from the surrounding natural environment and owner Lydia Thompson’s love of old weatherboard houses dotted around the Tasmanian countryside. Lydia led the design direction and partnered with builder <a href="https://www.instagram.com/jjsaccobuilding/?hl=en">JJ SACCO Building</a> to make her vision a reality, leveraging the durability and quality of <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/categories/cladding">Hardie™ exterior cladding</a> to successfully turn the 90’s style house into a contemporary weatherboard farmhouse. The biggest transformation was the exterior, where dated peach and tan bricks were covered with Linea™ Weatherboard to modernise the façade.

The family of five (along with a menagerie of animals) desired a beautiful but functional light-filled open plan family home with plenty of storage and easy to clean surfaces to feature in the interior. “Overall we wanted to enhance the county feeling on the outside whilst having a modern feel on the inside but still being able to connect the two spaces together. The existing bricks made the front façade very dark and flat. Also, the property was set down the driveway with a deep front porch, which made the house look small. I was mindful of these factors when choosing an option for the façade,” explains Lydia.

Builder Jarrad Sacco suggested <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/categories/cladding/scyon-linea-weatherboard">Linea™ Weatherboard</a> to cover the existing brick. “It was evident the best option was to use Linea™ Weatherboard to create the modern farmhouse design my clients were seeking. This product is made of <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/fibre-cement">Hardie™ fibre cement</a>, is rot resistant and deemed non-combustible. The weatherboards also add a layer of insulation over the bricks,” says Jarrad. Designer Lydia was in complete agreement: “The 180mm Linea™ Weatherboard was the perfect choice as it added texture, made the façade feel higher and added interest along the front patio.” The Linea™ Weatherboard was painted in Dulux® Lexicon® Quarter and visually contrasted with roofing and gutters painted in Dulux® Shale Grey™.

Not only did the Linea™ Weatherboard completely transform the home and ensure long lasting durability, but it was also both a cost effective and time saving option for the project. “My clients saved money by selecting Linea™ Weatherboard, as they only had to pay one trade (installing only requires one trade) and it’s a faster method than bricklaying and rendering. The alternatives are a longer process and these trades are in high demand as there are less of them in the building industry,” explains Jarrad. From installing the battens onto the brickwork and framing out the windows and doors to installing the boards, the process was a breeze. “The builders found the product easy to install and if I had my time again I would clad the whole house in Linea™ Weatherboard, not just half!” exclaims Lydia.

Since completing this beautiful renovation, the house was recently sold to a local family. “The real estate listing was the number one viewed property in Tasmania and seventh overall in Australia. From this, the most popular question we got asked was if we rebuilt it as it looks like a brand-new house. It’s truly amazing what one product can achieve,” says Lydia.

Refreshing a dated façade and creating a more visually striking look through a modern revamp was the upgrade vision Liam Worthington of <a href="https://worthingtonhomes.com.au/">Worthington Homes</a> had for one of their display homes. A unique eye-catching design was required to ensure the home stood out to potential home-buyers in the display village.

It is an intriguing design feature that changes with the light depending on where you are observing it from.” The embedded texture within the 8.5mm thick fibre cement panels is both a building and design feature delivering on a visually sophisticated, softly brushed concrete look without any specialist trades required. Conveniently, the fibre cement cladding is delivered pre-primed and ready to paint. Liam’s decision to paint the Hardie™ Brushed Concrete Cladding crisp white to tie back with the cantilevered roof line added dimension and visual interest, making the home’s entrance even more inviting.

Wanting to upgrade the home’s façade quickly and efficiently, Liam appreciated using <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/categories/cladding/hardie-brushed-concrete-cladding">Hardie™ Brushed Concrete Cladding</a> and the benefits of its embedded texture which gave the house a modern look without the trouble of a traditional brick render. “If we were building from scratch we would use Hardie™ Brushed Concrete Cladding extensively to save time and reduce costs, especially when compared to brick render or other exterior materials,” said Liam. 
Further reducing the upgrade costs was the efficiency of the cladding’s panel sizes. “Three metre panels were ideal for minimising wastage and presented significant time and cost savings, especially reduced labour costs if you have trades familiar with the installation process,” said Liam. Another installation advantage was the use of the <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/accessory/9mm-Aluminium-Base-Trim">Hardie™ 9mm Aluminium Base Trim</a> which helped his team ensure the required ground clearance at the home’s ground floor entry. “We made sure to align the cladding’s joints with the window openings and to be honest, you could barely notice them once the walls were painted,” said Liam, who appreciated that the rendered brick joints and junctions with both types of Hardie™ fibre cement cladding were seamless.

Inspired by the year-round morning light, the warmth of the north east facing site, and the sandy white foreshore, Keil delivered a timeless classic beach house with all the hallmarks of true <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/hardie-hamptons-collection">Hamptons style</a>. Moving the bedrooms to a new upper level allowed for a ground floor re-design to exploit the existing footprint, while the first floor’s use of <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/fibre-cement">Hardie™ fibre cement</a> allowed for additional bedroom floorspace. Taking cues from its location and orientation, the fully renovated home kept general colour tones muted, pastel and warm to elevate, share and distribute natural light throughout the interior and exterior without being clinical.

As the sun shifts throughout the day, the deep <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/categories/cladding/scyon-linea-weatherboard">Linea™ Weatherboard</a> edge provides a great visual line that casts shadow over each trailing weatherboard. “This creates depth and articulation to the wall surface so the profile of the boards dominate the facade, which is most important with a coastal type design,” said Keil.
Shifting all the bedrooms to the new first floor created an opportunity to work with a large amount of internal ground floor space. After allocations for general living areas were made, Keil re-purposed existing excess internal ground floor space into al fresco covered areas. 
An open-plan kitchen, living and dining area is the true heart of the home. Perfect for a family that enjoys entertaining, the new covered outdoor dining area has become an extension of the indoor space, offering easy access to the pool which can be enjoyed all year round given the Gold Coast’s warm summers and temperate winters.

“The kitchen and living areas are where the family spends the most time, so it was important for us to give the feeling of calm, with a less is more approach. By pairing strong statement lines such as ceiling detail, with soft curves and textures in the furnishings, the style incorporates classic coastal, minimalist and organic themes,” says Keil.

One of the couples’ favourite rooms is the master bedroom and there are a few key features that make it special. “Throughout the home, we’ve used soaring 3.6m raked ceilings as a design element,” says Keil, “and we wanted to do the same and add that architectural feature in the master bedroom, allowing an abundance of natural light.” 
One of Keil’s favourite aspects of the build was the instant feeling of calm that’s been created, like you’re on holiday. “We’ve really tried to adapt a simple approach as the design of the build, the beautiful exterior weatherboards and the styling is enough to give it that ‘wow’ factor”.

Reece Keil Design: Transforming Zero Appeal to Hamptons Sophistication

A modern extension adds new life to an Edwardian home in suburban Melbourne

Positioned on a wide block (22m wide x 36m long), ‘Montrose’, originally a single level Edwardian homestead in Malvern built c1912, was in desperate need of some TLC. There were some heritage overlay rules for Andrew Brown, Principal Director of <a href="https://sketchbuildingdesign.com.au/">Sketch Building Design</a> to adhere to, but thankfully nothing as strict as a heritage order. This enabled him to fulfill his client’s brief of improving the home through creating more living space, while being respectful of the age and style of the original house.

The home’s newly renovated exterior and interior takes design inspiration from the classical Edwardian frontage. The homeowner’s desired aesthetic was modern farmhouse style with a touch of heritage. Ultimately, they wanted to keep the home light and bright with a modern gable roof line, well-positioned light wells, and to incorporate black steel French doors as a feature to the outdoor space. “The existing house was white weatherboard and the inspiration was to keep this style and aesthetic, with a modern farmhouse twist,” said Andrew. “To keep this style, we replaced the old weatherboard on the front of the house with <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/categories/cladding/scyon-linea-weatherboard">Linea™ Weatherboards</a> by James Hardie, and used <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/categories/cladding/scyon-axon-cladding">Axon™ Cladding</a> vertically on the rear and second storey addition to add a contemporary feel.” The Linea™ Weatherboards and Axon™ Cladding were painted white to deliver the light and bright home sought by Andrew’s client. “Both exterior cladding products are durable, have a very good energy rating, and the ease of installation made it a quicker and cost-effective build,” said Andrew.

The functionality of the home’s new layout is design success for Andrew. The homeowners, a young family with three primary school-aged boys, requested three bedrooms on the second storey of the addition for their sons. On the ground floor, one of the rooms in the original house became the master bedroom and an adjoining bedroom was transformed into a walk-in robe with connecting ensuite. Another original bedroom in the home became a guest bedroom with ensuite, while the original front lounge room was converted into an office. This <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/modern-look">purposeful design</a> met the needs of a busy modern family with personal and professional demands of the home. “On top of the new bedrooms, open-plan living, and kitchen featuring a butler’s pantry, a mud room with external access was created which was perfect for a home with three young boys. The double fireplace services both the family room and entertaining room,” said Andrew.

The <a href="https://hardiehomeguide.jameshardie.com.au/inspiration/get-planning/room-to-move-how-to-add-a-modern-extension">ground floor rear extension</a> features an open plan kitchen and living area which opens onto a patio and pool in the backyard. With a large block, the project wasn’t constrained by space, however the pool in the south-facing rear yard had to be positioned correctly to get the late afternoon sun. Another design consideration was ensuring the second-storey addition didn’t over-power the traditional features of the front of the house. This was achieved by locating the addition at the back of the house, minimising its impact on the street view.

It is difficult to tell where the old part of the house ends and the extension begins – the only telling sign is from the exterior as you see the complimentary transition from <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/categories/cladding/scyon-linea-weatherboard">Linea™ Weatherboards</a> to the vertical <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/categories/cladding/scyon-axon-cladding">Axon™ Cladding</a> of the extension. The home also capitalises on a seamless transition from interior to exterior with the continuity of <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/categories/interior-linings/axon-cladding-interior">Axon™ Cladding’s v-groove from the interior</a> through to the exterior of the extension.

“The homeowner featured metal cladding in their original mood board, but I suggested Axon™ Cladding, installed vertically, would better suit the property. Brick was purposefully not chosen for the extension of this home due to the look and feel, ease of use, product availability, and scale of the sheets of the Axon™ Cladding,” said Andrew. Axon™ Cladding can also be painted in any colour, and this flexibility allowed it to perfectly complement the white bright colour scheme of the original limestone.
Environmentally, the home’s orientation wasn’t great for energy ratings, but with considered material choices, the home has achieved a 6-star rating. The home features double-glazed windows and the new gable roof has a large cavity filled with insulation to improve the thermal properties of the home.

Andrew highlights that the scale of the project sets it apart, while the space around the home allows the original Edwardian façade to be the focal point. “Too many heritage homes are dominated by their new additions,” said Andrew who is proud to have delivered a home where the home is brought back to life whilst not drowning out the home’s history is not drowned out.

The Bonny House: Heritage Terrace Homes and Fire Safety Compliance

Originally built in 1900 and in desperate need of an upgrade, The Bonny House is a single-fronted, Victorian cottage located in Melbourne’s tightly controlled heritage precinct of Albert Park.
Designer and <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/partnerships/buildher-collective">BuildHer Collective</a> alum Ivy Huang’s vision for the renovation was to create a beautiful yet comfortable three bedroom home that is built with sustainability in mind while <a href="https://hardiehomeguide.jameshardie.com.au/inspiration/get-inspired/heritage-meets-modern">respecting the original heritage characteristics</a>.
The Bonny House’s heritage characteristics were also a factor in the transition to a safe, compliant home. Ensuring the home met present day fire resistance levels and acoustic codes required careful consideration as the traditional terrace house had no external access to either side of the property.

“These types of row terraces are built right up to the boundary, so not only do the boundary walls need to perform at a certain fire resistance level (FRL), we needed a wall system that could be built without any access from the external side. The <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/hardiesmart-fire-&-acoustic-wall-systems-zerolot-wall-system">Hardie™ Smart Dual ZeroLot™ Wall System</a> was perfect for that,” she explains.
When a building has one external wall built against the property line, the house is said to have a virtually “zero lot” line, which is common in terrace style homes such as The Bonny House. The <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/hardiesmart-fire-&-acoustic-wall-systems-zerolot-wall-system">Hardie™ Smart Dual ZeroLot™ Wall System</a> is comprised of two fire and acoustic rated Hardie™ Smart Dual ZeroLot™ boundary walls built back-to-back with at least one built modularly. The external wall face is fitted with a specialised pre-sealed cladding known as Hardie™ ZeroLot™ Panel designed for areas with restricted access for maintenance.
Choosing the right boundary <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/categories/performance-wall-systems">wall system</a> was especially important as its selection was required to obtain a building permit. Ivy recalls, “It was a very early decision point for us and luckily the product team from James Hardie had all the necessary information ready to go which made getting council approval was a breeze!”
As well as being a necessity for a building permit, implementing the <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/hardiesmart-fire-&-acoustic-wall-systems-zerolot-wall-system">Hardie™ Smart Dual ZeroLot™ Wall System </a> created more usable space. The compact solution maximised indoor space which was perfect for the 140m2 site.
Further maximising indoor space and delivering a seamless transition between old and new, Ivy used a mixture of fibre cement <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/categories/cladding">exterior cladding</a> products from James Hardie. The rear façade features <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/categories/cladding/hardie-fine-texture-cladding">Hardie™ Fine Texture Cladding</a> on the upper level, with a subtle shift to <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/categories/cladding/scyon-axon-cladding">Axon™ Cladding</a> by James Hardie on the ground floor.

Renovation of Heritage Terrace Homes to ensure Fire Safety

Stria™ Cladding delivers a contemporary finish and savings on costs and time

This residential project looked towards Hardie™ fibre cement products to add a modern extension to an old period house to transform the way the homeowners lived.
The brief to builder Peter Johnstone from <a href="http://drakebuild.com.au/">DrakeBuild</a> was to build a modern extension on an old period home to make a beautiful, functional family home that offered space for entertainment and to accommodate family living. Adding visual interest to the outdoor space was also high on the homeowner’s wish list, as the new exterior walls formed the backdrop to the outdoor entertainment space. 
In a considered approach, a tired 1930’s Californian Bungalow has been revitalised to retain the heritage front of the home and a new modernised extension to the rear, in what is now a ‘forever home’.

In building the modern extension, the exterior building material was key to the successful integration of the original home and the new extension. In contrast to the heritage front façade, <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/categories/cladding/scyon-stria-cladding">Stria™ Cladding</a> by James Hardie with its deep grooves and strong vertical lines introduced design versatility and contemporary looks to the addition. 
“To bring to life the contemporary style it was a unanimous decision by the homeowner and architect, Lyndall Williams of <a href="https://www.my-architect.com.au/">My Architect</a>, that Stria™ Cladding was used on the home. From a builder’s perspective, we always use Hardie™ products when it comes to <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/fibre-cement">fibre cement cladding</a>, as it’s a superior product to anything else on the market and provides building cost efficiencies,” says Peter.

“Using Stria™ Cladding 405mm provided extensive benefits not only to the homeowner in regards to design possibilities and long term durability, but also to the building team in terms of ease of use and speed to complete the project and let the homeowners enjoy their new house,” says Peter.

Peter notes that it only took two workers a few days to install all the Stria™ Cladding. “From a business perspective the ease of installation is such a huge advantage. The wide cladding sheets cover more area, making installation quicker, and the ‘secret fixing’ with screws being hidden behind the overlapping sheets, means there’s no holes for the painters to have to fill. Additionally, each panel comes pre-sealed and can be finished simply with two coats of paint in any colour of choice, offering additional time savings with painters. It’s a smart business choice to use a product such as Stria.”
“Using Hardie™ products and accessories makes the job quicker, as they all work together hand in hand. On this project we used Stria™ aluminium internal and external corner flashings, Hardie™ Blade, Hardie™ Drive Screws and Hardie™ Joint Sealant.” 
Assisting with the build being on time and on budget was local hardware provider, <a href="https://www.parkroad.net.au/">Park Road Timber</a>, who has worked with DrakeBuild for over ten years. Peter says, “Having a reliable supplier is imperative. As part of our team, we really rely on them to educate us on new products on the market as well as sourcing building materials for each project so there are no delays. My rep, Anthony Stephens goes above and beyond to assist us.”
“This project was extremely satisfying,” says Peter. “The homeowner’s respect for the bungalow’s past and desire for a modern extension, sees a marriage of styles. The homeowner is thrilled with how the project turned out. I love the rear extension, the high ceilings that flowed through to the outside eave that is also lined with <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/categories/cladding/scyon-stria-cladding">Stria™ Cladding</a>. Stria™ Cladding allowed us to achieve the <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/modern-look">modern look</a> extension the client was after, as well as, importantly, saving us time and money on the project.”

Ground floor extensions are twice as common as upper floor additions.

Pushing out works only if there’s available yard space. Floor space can be added starting with a slab on flat ground or on pilings on a sloping site. Fibre cement cladding is on-frame allowing the construction of high performance walls with a width of just 100mm saving up to 130mm of floor space compared with brick veneer cladding which needs to sit on a slab.

You don’t have to renovate with the same style or materials as your home was originally designed for. Who want’s more small, stuffy and dark rooms? It’s common to have renovation additions done in a modern materials and in a contemporary style which encourages light, breeze, open plan living and alfresco dining areas. While the front of the home may have a heritage feel the back can be in a modern style. James Hardie cladding products on-frame which prompts opportunities for a modern design. While it’s important not to over-capitalize, you should consider the needs of your family over resale value. Renovate your home so it’s a sanctuary. A safe and warm space to rejuvenate from a busy modern life. Make a place you love to come home to and include some design variation. Building the same as everyone else can actually hurt the resale value.

Dave and Bindi Riley loved the location of their well-worn, Gymea Bay house in Sydney’s Sutherland Shire. Their children were settled into the area and the family had a tight knit social network close-by. But their home was in desperate need of repair.

The logical solution for the Riley’s was to <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/renovations">renovate</a>, but rather than undertake a simple renovation, they worked with Catherine Heraghty at interior design studio <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/partnerships/the-stables">The Stables</a> to devise a complete overhaul of the property. This included a new floor plan, new bathrooms and kitchen and reimagined outside areas that were fit for an active family of four.

The Riley’s had a clear vision for the design inspiration of their home. They wanted something different to the plethora of <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/hamptons-look">Hamptons</a>-inspired houses seen in The Shire and loved the appeal of a more <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/modern-look">modern</a> industrial look.
“Dave and Bindi were keen to have a design that felt industrial but still modern, so we started preparing the concept. We wanted something that didn’t feel too strong or harsh for the landscape. I would say we landed on a ‘soft industrial’ concept – <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/partnerships/the-stables">The Stables</a>’ version of modern industrial style,” Catherine said.

Soft industrial has all the strong, masculine elements of industrial design but it is balanced with softer finishes that prevents it from overpowering a space. The home was designed with a purposeful modernity – the soft industrial aesthetic was anchored by the Riley’s need for a robust house that would stand up to the needs of a young, active family.
This was Catherine’s first foray into <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/blog/Talking%20Scandi%20Barn%20with%20Catherine%20from%20The%20Stables">designing a façade</a>, so it made sense to her to use materials she was familiar and therefore more confident with.
“We used <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/hardie-fine-texture-cladding">Hardie™ Fine Texture Cladding</a> on the entire exterior for its subtlety and durability. The smooth natural sand texture of the product allowed for the stronger, more industrial elements of the façade such as the timber posts and black balustrade to standout as features while softening the overall look,” explained Catherine.

However, the overriding consideration for the façade design was <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/blog/outside-in-exteriors-and-the-importance-of-first-appearances">street appeal</a> and ensuring that the house was interesting enough but did not feel disjointed in the overall streetscape.
“It is a very unique looking home and we designed it that way, but it also needed to look like it belonged in its own street, so it was important that we struck a balance between the stronger industrial and more subtle design elements,” Catherine said.
“I’m a designer who relies heavily on texture to create a sense of warmth and interest and <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/hardie-fine-texture-cladding">Hardie™ Fine Texture Cladding</a> added just enough interest without detracting from the main features. It really was key to perfecting the soft-industrial look,” she added.

When choosing colours for the façade, Catherine and her team were able to play with the effects of the changing light throughout the day to really showcase the softness that the cladding provided.
“We painted three large samples of the pre-primed cladding, sat it on-site and viewed it at different times of the day to see how the light affected the colour in the morning, afternoon and evening,” Catherine explained.
“It’s so important to understand that colour can behave differently throughout the day, we held the painted samples against other finishes on the exterior to ensure everything felt harmonious. We wouldn’t have had the opportunity to sample colours so comprehensively if we hadn’t used Hardie™ Fine Texture Cladding,” she added.

The entire build took six months to complete and both the Riley’s and Catherine were extremely pleased with the outcome. What they achieved was the result of a clear design vision, the courage to stand out from their suburban status quo and the use of the right materials and colours.

Catherine comments, “I’m so happy with the final result, we’re not known for the industrial look, and I felt we not only met the brief but we created a beautiful sense of cohesion between the interior and exterior of the home.”
“I can’t wait to design more façades; I’m feeling more confident in this space and knowing the Hardie™ product so well makes it possible to visualise the end result – which makes it easier to recommend to clients.”

A Renovation for the Ages:  Discover how this ‘90s Suburban House was Transformed into a Spacious, Multi-Generational Masterpiece

Situated on the southern edge of metropolitan Sydney and backing on to the Royal National Park, this Bundeena home is the embodiment of a modern <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/renovations">home renovation</a> adding value, style, and a place for family to come together. 
Homeowner Jen and her three children live in the home but recently welcomed Jen’s parents which was a defining moment in making the choice to do a second storey extension to the home. Originally a <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/renovations">single-storey home</a>, the house has been transformed into a modern two-storey home where multi-generations can live comfortably. The new second level is practically self-contained, providing a space for Jen’s parents with bedrooms, living areas, kitchen, bathroom, and laundry included to optimise privacy and provide the family with options for years to come.

Data from the Housing Industry Association indicates such renovations are surging. Australians want renovations which add space and increase the value of their home. Home additions which can accommodate dynamic extended families have driven the annual growth rate of alterations and additions valued over $10,000 to 111 per cent. In the 2020/21 financial year alone there was $43.0 billion worth of renovation activity (HIA National Outlook, Spring 2021). 
“The façade is your first impression of a home, your welcome, and it’s incredibly important to get the scale and materiality right here to make sure you are building a home with an inviting space that homeowners want to be in,” says Graham Irving from Arctec Circle Building Design, who worked with Jen to ensure the design of the addition provided the <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/modern-look">modern look</a> that appealed to her and updated the design of the original dated house.

For inspiration, Jen accessed designs online, visited display homes, downloaded <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/renovationguide">James Hardie’s renovation guide</a> and also viewed the style of house in surrounding neighbourhoods’ new builds so her new home would fit into the streetscape and softly blend into the bushland just metres from the back of the property. “Living on the edge of the Royal National Park, we didn’t want our home to stand out too much. Harmony with the natural setting we wake up to every day was important to us,” said Jen.

Giving the house a modern and warm vibe, a <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/looks/modern/mixed-cladding">mixed cladding look</a> was chosen featuring neutral cladding paint colours that reflects the natural bushland surrounds. <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/categories/cladding/hardie-fine-texture-cladding">Hardie™ Fine Texture Cladding</a> fibre cement panels provided the consistent embedded cement render texture look and was ideal as the primary exterior building material making an impact with its clean lines and contemporary roof line form to deliver a modern design aesthetic. To add some drama and detail, <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/categories/cladding/scyon-axon-cladding">Axon™ Cladding</a> vertical groove cladding has been used as a contrasting secondary cladding feature on the front of the house at the entrance and around the living room window and at the rear of the house where the home opens to decks on each level from which to enjoy the view of the National Park which stretches until the horizon.

Both the render cladding and vertical groove cladding appealed to Jen, but particularly, the Hardie™ Fine Texture Cladding after it was suggested by her builder James Powditch from J.P. Build. “I really liked the simple but styled textured panelling look provided by Hardie™ Fine Texture Cladding,” said Jen. The home’s original exterior was rendered brick veneer and the decision was made to cover the original brickwork with the cladding to ensure a continuous look, offering a contemporary transformation of the house. “Using the cladding instead of building with brick and then rendering was a wise decision as not only would rendering have increased both the cost and build time of the renovation, but we have all the benefits of the cladding material.” Despite their different aesthetics both cladding styles come in large panels which are installed in a similar manner which helps building efficiency.

The Bushfire Attack Level (BAL) of both cladding types was ideal for the home’s location. “With our home located on the edge of the Royal National Park, we are in the worst bushfire category (BAL FZ), so knowing that Hardie™ Fine Texture Cladding and Axon™ Cladding had a strong fire rating put my mind at ease,” said Jen. Windows also had to include shutters for the same fire safety reasons.

For a timeless look, Jen has chosen a minimalist colour palette exterior paint colours keeping it to two colours and choosing a low-sheen paint that works with the modern profile to give a contemporary matte look. For this project, the Hardie™ Fine Texture Cladding, which is shipped pre-primed and ready to paint, has been painted in a dark Taubmans’ Wallaby to match the Colorbond roof. Axon™ Cladding, with its striking vertical lines, colour contrasts with the rest of the build by being painted in Dulux’s Winter Fog.

While increasing square feet is an obvious benefit of any home addition, it should also be an opportunity to consider your block and how you live, to define the new space and redefine the entire home. This renovation has exceeded Jen’s expectations and she could never have imagined her vision for her home looking this good. The end result is a stunning modern family home perfectly suited to the family’s lifestyle for many years to come.
