Products that save time, cost and complexity on the building site are always welcome in any builder’s toolkit. Introducing Secura™ Flooring, a lightweight structural flooring that can be installed over timber or steel floor joists and can be used as an internal substrate for tile, vinyl or carpet.
That means the everyday renovator has even more flooring options for almost every space.
“If you’re looking for a full wet area solution that’s quick and easy to install, consider Secura™ Interior Flooring from James Hardie,” says builder Neil Hipwell from Futureflip. “With Secura™ Interior Flooring, unlike timber flooring, you can tile directly, removing the need for underlays and mortar beds outside the shower area.”
Let’s explore the top five reasons why builders and renovators love this product.
Secura™ Flooring is a durable flooring substrate made from Hardie™ fibre cement that offers the robust feel of concrete with the speed of timber installation. Engineered to address a range of performance needs for residential and light commercial floors, it’s available in 19mm and 22mm thicknesses, giving you a stable and solid squeak-free floor.
It’s the perfect wet area flooring product as it’s resistant to moisture damage, providing you with added confidence before, during and after installation. It won't warp or twist like some other materials can. More on that later!
Secura™ Flooring offers a wet area flooring solution. It’s easy to install and features a surface sealer to help reduce moisture penetration. This protection means water beads on the surface rather than penetrates.
“The bathroom is the most expensive area in the house, it’s so important to get the substructure right to prevent any future problems,” says Neil Hipwell.
While shower areas will always need waterproofing, this simple product’s moisture-resistant sealer removes the need for full floor waterproofing outside enclosed shower areas. That’s a huge win for efficiency in bathroom builds and renovations.
“Secura™ Flooring is suitable for any type of bathroom or laundry, and, because of its moisture resistance, many wet areas won’t require waterproofing, helping save a lot of time and hassle,” Neil says.
Not just for wet areas, Secura™ Flooring is suitable for dry areas too. Versatile, light and durable, Secura™ Interior Flooring provides double-sided functionality – one side of the board is designed for tile application, while the other is designed for use under carpet or vinyl.
It can also be used in external applications, installed over timber or lightweight steel floor joists as a substrate for tile finishes.
Builders love working with this product because it’s so quick and easy to install, meaning time-saving benefits.
Unlike some other flooring substrates, Secura™ Flooring can be gun nailed to the floor without pre-drilling holes, which can help save time in the installation process.
Traditionally, particle board and ceramic tile underlay cement sheets are used for tiled areas. The particle board floor is laid first, followed by the ceramic tile underlay over the top.
Installing Secura™ Flooring in dry areas is a much simpler process, helping save significant time. Secura™ Flooring is glued and gun-nailed to the floor joists with a standard framing or coil gun. Cutting is simple using a Hardie™ Blade in a circular saw, connected to an M-Class vacuum.
Secura™ Flooring is so tough, it can be exposed to the elements for up to three months without warping or twisting.
“Secura™ Flooring is rot resistant and won't warp or twist, so it gives you the ultimate foundation for tiles, vinyl or flooring,” explains Neil. "It’s also resistant to termite damage and is impact resistant."
It is also fire-resistant and deemed non-combustible in accordance with the National Construction Code.
Secura™ Flooring is engineered to endure, and offers a warranty of 25 years, providing peace of mind in a trusted, long-lasting product.
“The main reason I love using Secura™ Flooring is that it’s extremely easy to install because of the tongue and groove system,” says Neil. “You can fix it with a nail gun, so there’s no need for pre-drilling or screwing anything. You can clip it all together, put some glue in your joint and nail it all down, drastically speeding up the installation process.”
