Bright and bold: Sunny Passivhaus wraps sustainability in Barn-style elegance

In Melbourne’s northeastern suburb of Alphington, Sunny Passivhaus has redefined what sustainable living actually looks like. Designed by Altereco Design and built by G-LUX Builders, this is a high-performance home that achieves true passive house standards while still exuding the simplicity and warmth of the Barn aesthetic.

From the outset, sustainability was the foundation rather than the consideration. And with exterior solutions by James Hardie being the ideal fit for energy-efficient homes, it was a match made in heaven.

A form that follows performance

Every design decision at Sunny Passivhaus stemmed initially from performance. The block’s orientation allowed for excellent northern exposure, setting the stage for natural heating and light.

“The design strategy with a passive house is to keep the building as simple in form as possible, which makes it easier to comply with passive house requirements,” says building designer and founder of Altereco Design, James Goodlet.

“If we can minimise the amount of external surface area of the envelope versus the floor area, then it’s a lot more efficient in its resistance to outside elements.”

The result is a two-storey Barn-style home whose towering silhouette conceals layers of innovation. A dramatic central cut marks the entryway, clad in timber to contrast the facade wrapped in long-lasting Stria™ Cladding Smooth.

“We created this big monolith kind of house and then did an incision in the middle where the entryway is,” Goodlet says.

Wrapping performance in style

For both the building designers and builder, cladding helped to achieve airtightness and longevity without compromising on aesthetics. Stria™ Cladding Smooth was chosen for its full-wrap application and it managed to deliver the linear precision and low-maintenance durability that the project demanded.

“We’ve been using Stria™ Cladding Smooth for a long time,” Goodlet says. “The lengths are so long and it works well vertically.”

Jesse Glascott from G-LUX Builders agrees that its performance made it ideal for the build: “James Hardie’s array of exterior and trim product lines aligned with the client brief, offering easy installation, reliability and broad availability during restricted supply periods. They provided a clean finish that our carpenters are familiar with, making them a practical and cost-effective solution.”

Stria™ Cladding Smooth not only achieved the clean Barn-style finish but also supported the high-performance wall system required for passive house standards.

Inside the passive house envelope

The home’s wall assembly exemplifies precision. “The actual wall assembly for this house is quite significant,” Goodlet says. “We ended up choosing a 90mm frame, 60mm wood fibre with a membrane on the outside of that, then the battens to support the Hardie™ cladding. Overall, we created a 200mm-thick wall.”

The multi-layered construction delivers excellent insulation and airtightness while allowing a ventilated facade that prevents condensation build-up – a key principle of passive house design.

“It gave us the opportunity to create accentuations in the facade, with the windows set a little back with the reveals,” Goodlet adds.

Detailing the Barn aesthetic

Warm timber elements and neutral finishes soften the home’s minimalist form, creating a balanced and inviting aesthetic wrapped in durable cladding. The deep, square-shaped grooves of Stria™ Cladding Smooth accentuate the home’s proportions, while timber detailing softens its modern edge.

“Ensuring proper alignment and clean fixing patterns when installing Stria™ Cladding Smooth achieves the neat, modern finish intended,” Glascott says. “Our carpenters’ prior experience with the product streamlined the process.”

The home sits comfortably in its suburban context, creating what Goodlet describes as “a really iconic entry point for the house”.

Comfort through design

A true passive house is as much about comfort as it is energy performance. Every element – from insulation to shading – was carefully modelled for year-round stability.

“All the glazing is on the north side because it’s true north,” he says. “The eaves are designed to keep the home cool in summer and let the sunlight in during winter.”

The result is a home that stays cool, quiet and comfortable without a constant reliance on air conditioning – giving the homeowners impressive energy savings year-round. Moreover, G-LUX’s previous experience with building passive homes set the groundwork for a solid collaboration that resulted in a number of energy-efficient wins.

Together, the building designer and builder delivered a home that meets the strictest sustainability criteria while feeling effortlessly elegant.

Lessons for the next generation of builders

Having now completed several passive house projects, Goodlet said the approach is reshaping how Altereco designs.

“When we’re designing a new house, we’re assessing it with a passive house tool – whether the homeowners want to certify it or not,” he says. “We want our clients to understand what decisions they’re making along the way, especially from a performance point of view.”

His advice for those starting out is simple: “The simplicity of the thermal envelope is the most critical part. In a world where construction costs are through the roof, we don’t need to make them more complicated than necessary.”

Sunny Passivhaus is proof that sustainability and style can coexist harmoniously. Pairing smart design with weather-resistant materials like Stria™ Cladding Smooth resulted in a timeless example of idealistic modern Australian living and how it’s meant to look and feel.
