Axon™ Cladding provides the efficiency of a large panel and comes in a range of heights to suit common wall sizes, which helps to reduce waste. Featuring a stepped shiplap joint on the long edges for easy installation, it can be gun nailed and cut cleanly with a circular saw using a dust-reducing fibre cement blade.

Axon™ Cladding is available in two groove spacing options to give the appearance of narrow and wide board sizes. Axon™ Cladding 133mm Smooth and Axon™ Cladding 400mm Smooth are smooth textured panels with vertical grooves spaced 133mm and 400mm apart respectively. Modular Barn home pushes the boundaries of energy efficiency

The crisp lines, large windows, and instantly recognisable modern façade make Eden 20 an instant classic. Built by Victorian modular home builders, [Swanbuild](https://www.swanbuild.com.au/), the impressive contemporary Barn design includes plentiful features for those who love this contemporary style. Importantly, the home is an off-the-grid, modular home with an energy rating of 8.1 stars. 

The new home taps into the market shift towards 7-star rated homes which meet National Construction Code energy efficiency requirements based on recent updates to the Nationwide House Energy Rating Scheme (NatHERS). 

With energy costs increasing, the market is demanding more options according to Swanbuild owner Josh Perryman. “Clients are increasingly requesting more sustainable, energy-efficient homes coinciding with increased government direction,” said Perryman. “Our plan was to deliver a comfortable home with better living conditions than others on the market.”

## Achieving an incredible 8.1 Star Rating 

Josh also favours insulation as the core component driving the thermal properties of the home. The insulated walling system was the main contributor to its 8.1 star rating. An insulated 90mm frame combined with foam panels, [Hardie™ Wrap Weather Barrier](https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/hardiewrap-weather-barrier), a cavity system using James Hardie’s battened install method, and [Hardie™ Oblique™ Cladding](https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/hardie-oblique-cladding), delivers an outstanding R value of 5.2.  

Further, under floor insulation delivered an R value of R5.0 and ceiling insulation and roof blanket contribute R7.0 and R1.5 respectively. Large PVC window frames featuring double glazing and Low E glass let in plenty of light without letting energy escape, while a 15KW solar system with batteries rounds out the energy-efficient features.

For builders seeking to create their own energy-efficient home, Perryman advises focusing on design layout and insulation. “If building in Victoria, ideally, a home should face east to capture morning sun, with the longer side of the home facing north. Outdoor areas should face east to ensure afternoons aren’t impacted by too much heat in summer.”  

Windows are also a big factor in design, and Perryman notes any west-facing walls should have minimal windows.

Eden 20 is the first project on which Perryman has used [Hardie™ Oblique™ Cladding](https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/hardie-oblique-cladding), however he is no stranger to James Hardie’s range of fibre cement exterior products, previously using [Stria™ Cladding](https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/stria-cladding-smooth) on different projects. “Hardie™ Oblique™ Cladding works well with our goals for a Modern design,” said Perryman.

## Easy installation makes modular Barn design a breeze

The James Hardie technical team were also able to assist Perryman with technical advice in relation to applicable regulations. “The James Hardie technical team were very helpful with practical advice on flashings and window and corner finishings,” said Perryman. “Further, we have great relationships with our local suppliers and sourcing the materials was a very straight-forward process.”

### A style overview of Box Modern design
Box Modern is best summarised as controlled, precise, clearly contemporary architecture. It’s characterised by the arrangement and treatment of distinct boxes, elevating the simple shape into an elegant evolution of modernist design principles. 

Architect Joe Snell explains, “it's one of those names that sounds exactly as it is. It’s a modern form of architecture, which when you look at the building, it is made up of a series of boxes. It’s about presenting box forms and then layering them.” Crucially, it can be both grandiose, with multiple boxes on top of boxes, or more humble in approach. 

One of the key features of Box Modern home design is the focus on bold, geometric shapes to create a visually unique exterior. “You have an opportunity to push and pull the elevations or facades of those boxes back and forth,” says Joe Snell. “You can layer them up and down, and bring different materialities to each box or texture or colour. There’s a lot of opportunity within the scope of Box Modern.”

### Key elements of Box Modern house design
Box Modern homes incorporate minimalist principles and showcase architectural details such as shape, roofline, and cladding, often featuring contrasting colours and bold materials. The result is visually exciting and dynamic. Standout features are:

__Hidden roof line:__ “It’s a boxy look that involves a parapet. Hidden behind that parapet is a sloped roof, but you don't see those diagonal shapes,” explains Joe Snell.

__Windows:__ “Often aluminium windows at the facade line of the box without ornamentation or add-ons: it’s quite pared back,” says Joe.

__Doors:__ An oversized front door with stacked rectangular glass panels mimics the geometric shape of the house and lets natural light into the home. If space allows, a double door adds to the bold, grand design

__Balconies:__ “Balconies are set in; you can have recesses within the box where things are set in, but when you look at the building, that recess doesn't overtake the overall box look. The box form has to dominate,” says Joe Snell.

### Expressions of Box Modern facades
A huge part of the appeal of Box Modern is the unique design expressions available.

Popular on inner-city blocks as a knockdown-rebuild solution, the __Inner City Box__ works to maximise interior space on smaller frontages without compromising on privacy. It is also a popular solution to side-by-side subdivisions in the inner-city.

The Drummoyne Project is an example of the Inner City Box expression, demonstrating how a spacious home can be delivered with a minimalist Box Modern look on a small plot using [Axon™ Cladding](https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/scyon-axon-cladding).

__Tiny Box__ is another bold expression. A diminutive style with efficiency and sustainability at its core, it is characterised as modular forms with flat or shed roofs, light and height. BuildHer Collective’s Rathmine's Project embodies this: its textural and tonal materiality highlights its boxy expression.

Box Modern home design: key moments in this standout look

Hardie™ Oblique™ Cladding brings depth and rhythm to this contemporary home

## Pairing recycled bricks with vertical-groove shiplap boards for a classic farm-style gable connects this modern family home to local heritage.

When building his new home on the rural outskirts of Christchurch, Myles Laing, managing director of construction company Laing Properties, searched locally for design inspiration. He loved The Tannery, a retail destination inside a converted brick factory. Its style, fusing industrial chic with vintage charm, was suited to the Canterbury climate and construction know-how. So he paired recycled bricks with [Hardie™ Oblique™ Cladding](https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/hardie-oblique-cladding) – which he’d used on several Laing Properties homes – and went to his designer Nathan Punton of PXA Architects to make the vision a reality.

‘Myles asked us specifically to use Oblique™ Cladding,’ says Nathan. ‘His company had installed it in a series of their prefabricated houses, and Myles liked the way the shiplap boards could be painted dark colours and came in extra-long lengths.’

## Classic form with a modern look

The house comprises two gabled pavilions, one for living and one for sleeping, along with a three-car garage arranged to convert one end into a fourth bedroom at a later date if required. As the site is set on former farmland close to the surrounding Port Hills, Myles and his wife Lucinda wanted the feeling of country living for family life, reflected in the classic farm-style gable.

‘We chose to define the separate wings in different claddings for contrast,’ says Nathan. ‘Myles and Lucinda chose brick for the sleeping pavilion and garage, while the living pavilion has [Hardie™ Oblique™ Cladding](https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/hardie-oblique-cladding).’

[Oblique™ Cladding](https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/hardie-oblique-cladding) comes in two widths, 200mm and 300mm, and Nathan combined both in a randomised pattern. The pattern brings depth and character to the long and end elevations, as well as generous proportions and a modern look on account of the boards’ width.

## Shadow and light

Essential to this visual effect is the way the grooves are cut in the individual boards – one side of the groove is angled whilst the other is vertical, creating a juxtaposition of shadow and highlight. Combined with the two width options, the product allows architects to create patterns and rhythms and an ever-shifting interplay of shadow and light.

While the two board widths allow for aligning with windows and architectural features, the 4.2-metre board length also provides for a premium finish. ‘We use Oblique™ Cladding a lot of the time due to the board length,’ says Nathan. ‘We don’t need to do a flashing joint – we can just use the full 4.2-metre piece for a full gable end and the 2.7-metre piece for the side elevations.’

## Dark colours and performance

Myles and Lucinda chose an earthy black, Resene Element, to paint their [Hardie™ Oblique™ Cladding](https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/hardie-oblique-cladding), which is often not possible with timber products. At 14mm thick, the premium fibre cement board not only looks good and provides the home with structural performance, it also contributes to interior comfort and liveability. ’There’s good, robust board density with Oblique,’ says Nathan. ‘As the house is on a main road, we had noise requirements, so the density of the 14mm board helped to achieve the sound transmission rating required by the building code for living spaces.’

To blend their home into the natural environment, the couple have planted trees and plants in contrasting colours that look great against the dark-painted [Hardie™ Oblique™ Cladding](https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/hardie-oblique-cladding) and vintage bricks. And knowing just how well Oblique™ looks on Myles’s own home, as well as its easy installation, his company recommends it to clients who want a modern vertical profile cladding that is easy to maintain.

On the inside, lofty ceilings, large windows and open-plan living help to create a sense of connection and space. The Laings accentuated the feeling of spaciousness with a crisp palette of white and timber tones. Lucinda says the home feels like ‘being on holiday in Byron Bay and Bali, with a light, beachy theme’.
