For designer and BuildHer Collective alum Ivy Huang, injecting a little bit of herself into her latest renovation was more important than ever. The Bonny House, is not just a project, it’s Ivy’s home. Originally built in 1900 and in desperate need of an upgrade, The Bonny House is a single-fronted, Victorian cottage located in Melbourne’s Albert Park – a tightly controlled heritage precinct. There are specific challenges when renovating a period façade while adding an extension, follow the link to understand what these are. 

The Rathmine’s project by The Buildher 8 in Melbourne’s northern suburb of Fairfield, is a stunning example of a collaborative community and effort, and what can be achieved once empowered to do so. Traditionally, particle board and ceramic tile underlay cement sheets are used for tiled areas. The particle board floor is laid first, followed by the ceramic tile underlay over the top.

Installing Hardie™ Secura™ Flooring in dry areas is a much simpler process, helping save significant time. It is glued and gun-nailed to the floor joists with a standard framing or coil gun. Cutting is simple using a Hardie™ Blade in a circular saw, connected to an M-Class vacuum.

Hardie™ Secura™ Flooring is a durable yet lightweight structural flooring that can be installed over timber or steel floor joists and can contribute to a 7-star rating. Hardie™ Secura™ Flooring is the ideal wet area flooring solution. It’s resistant to moisture damage and features a surface sealer to help reduce moisture penetration and means water beads on the surface rather than penetrates.

The moisture-resistant surface sealer removes the need for full floor waterproofing outside enclosed shower areas. Also, unlike plywood or particle board, you can tile directly onto it without the need for underlay, helping to avoid noticeable height differences from one floor finish to the next. Hardie™ Secura™ Flooring is quick and easy to install with its tongue and groove joint, which also eliminates the need for timber trimmers. 

Unlike some other flooring substrates, Hardie™ Secura™ Flooring can be gun nailed to the floor without pre-drilling and screwing holes, helping save time in installation.

The Mid Century Modern Look is architecture style originated in Europe with minimalist exquisite detail and bold modernist architecture.

Originating in Europe, modernism influenced housing and furniture design from the 1930's through to the 1970's. It was hopeful and experimental. One of the main principles is "form follows function" meaning that the purpose comes before design indulgences. 

Palm Springs, California has the most bold modernist architecture, thanks to the Hollywood stars of the 1950's who built homes there. Australia, on the other hand, embraced the mid-century modern look to build practical homes. Architects like Robin Boyd and Harry Seidler were proponents of the International Modern Movement and its influence on Australia. 

Award-winning architect David Boyle transformed this suburban modernist house into a celebratory expression of mid-century modern design and the connection to both the bushland setting and its spectacular harbour views.
