What is AAC and what can it do for your build?

We’ve tailored this for you. Select what best describes you.
Autoclaved aerated concrete (AAC) is a form of lightweight concrete designed to deliver strength, efficiency and modern performance in residential and multiresidential construction. Hardie™ Gravis™ Panel is made from AAC, combining the solid feel of masonry with the benefits of lighter weight and ease of installation.
AAC is manufactured using a carefully controlled mix of cement, sand, lime, gypsum and water. This mixture is poured into molds, where it expands to create millions of tiny air pockets. The material is then autoclaved (steamcured under high pressure) to harden it into a lightweight yet solid concrete panel.
To deliver longterm strength and durability, Hardie™ Gravis™ Panel features embedded, anticorrosion steel mesh reinforcement, providing structural integrity while maintaining the benefits of AAC’s reduced weight.
Widely valued for its thermal performance, acoustic properties and noncombustible nature, AAC is well suited to external walls, intertenancy walls and flooring applications in Australian homes. With Hardie™ Gravis™ Panel, James Hardie brings AAC together with fibre cement under one trusted brand, making it easier to specify, design and build modern mixed material homes with confidence.

Once installed on the exterior, Hardie™ Gravis™ Panel is finished with a render coating system, providing a solid substrate for a wide range of colours, textures and finishes. This allows you to achieve the clean, contemporary rendered look many homeowners love, enhancing street appeal and bringing your personal design vision to life.
A variety of render textures can be applied to create different visual effects, from smooth, refined finishes to more tactile or expressive surfaces, allowing the exterior of the home to be tailored to a range of architectural styles.

These rendered surfaces work seamlessly alongside Hardie™ fibre cement cladding profiles, where contrasting textures and lines can be combined to add depth, balance and visual interest across the facade. Together, rendered walls and fibre cement cladding create cohesive mixed‑material designs that feel considered, modern and enduring.
To achieve the best result for your chosen finish, coating manufacturers’ application guides should be followed to ensure the render system is applied as intended and performs at its best. As a render‑ready wall panel, Hardie™ Gravis™ Panel offers a simple, dependable way to deliver modern rendered aesthetics, while providing the durability, comfort and confidence families rely on.
