James Hardie releases FY2024 Sustainability Report highlighting Australian ESG successes

James Hardie is proud to release its latest annual sustainability report detailing progress across the four primary pillars of our environmental, social and governance (ESG) strategy, which are Zero Harm, Planet, Innovation, and Communities. 

The report, entitled “Building a Culture of Sustainability,” features employee-driven initiatives, key industry collaborations and innovations to advance our purpose of Building a Better Future for All™. 

### In Australia, we had some specific highlights included in the report that contributed to our ESG Goals:

__Reducing our carbon footprint__

We had a 22% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions at our Carole Park, Queensland facility in CY23 from CY19, due to the elimination of coal, lean initiatives and grid decarbonization. Building upon our success in transitioning from coal to natural gas in the manufacturing processes at our Carole Park, we are developing a renewable electricity roadmap in the Asia Pacific region. We are also investing in reducing our natural gas consumption at Carole Park by tracking daily use and intensity metrics, creating action plans, meeting weekly, and engaging our people at the plant level. 

__Raising the bar on water conservation__

We are upgrading the technology in our plants to reduce water consumption. In Carole Park, Australia, we are investing millions of dollars to develop one of the most advanced water treatment plants across James Hardie to cut our wastewater discharge by at least half. 

Our new system will treat wastewater to remove and neutralize harmful chemicals so that it can be reused multiple times, contributing significantly to our goal of recycling 20 million cubic feet of water per year by 2030. The work we are doing in Carole Park is a foundational first step toward creating a closed loop system for water use and meeting our water recycling goal and will be leveraged to improve operations across the company. 

__Creating a healthier work environment__

In Rosehill, New South Wales, plant manager Hector Castro and his procurement team spearheaded efforts to incorporate three new electric forklifts into manufacturing and distribution. This eliminated worker exposure to forklift emissions, contributing to a healthier work environment for our employees. 

__Tracking safety performance__

In APAC, where our sites achieved a DART (Days Away, Restricted or Transferred) rate of 0.47 against 2.48 million hours worked in FY24, we continued to double down on safety and held stop events to encourage conversations after experiencing an incident. We believe that every incident is preventable, and we address Zero Harm through a focus on safe people, safe places and safe systems. 

__Helping Habitat for Humanity® globally__

Through our partnership with Habitat for Humanity Australia, we will provide [fibre cement products](https://www.jameshardie.com.au/fibre-cement) for durable, low maintenance and beautiful home exteriors. In addition, our employees regularly volunteer with the Brush with Kindness program, refurbishing crisis housing for women and children escaping domestic violence. We also donated through Habitat to Studio Purpose to provide housing for homeless youth in South Australia.

### The report includes the following global highlights from fiscal year 2024: 

__Integration into Business Processes:__ 
Sustainability strategies were integrated into the Hardie™ Manufacturing Operating System (HMOS) to help prioritise the sustainability impact of plant operations, while delivering against future targets. Internal, near-term regional targets were established to drive local accountability and progress toward James Hardie’s global environmental goals. 

__Zero Harm:__
Significant global investment was made in safety infrastructure projects, including upgrading equipment used when working from heights, installing more than 1,200 machine guards to provide additional protection for employees and promoting risk awareness. 

__Diversity in Management:__
The number of women in management increased from 19 percent in fiscal year 2023 to 23 percent in fiscal year 2024 toward the fiscal year 2026 goal of 25 percent. 

__Human Rights:__
Completed risk mapping of global in-scope tier one suppliers through a modern slavery lens and internationally recognized responsible business frameworks, an important next step to expand the responsible sourcing program.  

__Stronger Communities:__
Contributed $1.66 billion in economic value in the communities in which we operate through capital expenditures at plants and by investing in employees, local ecosystems and across the supplier base. Continued support of Habitat for Humanity Australia as an Impact partner, supporting low-income families and vulnerable groups in accessing safe shelter.

James Hardie has committed to a multi-year partnership beginning from the start of the 2025 season which supports NRL, NRLW, Elite Pathways and community initiatives, including initiating a career pathways program into the construction sector for Greater Western Sydney, home to 2.7 million people and one of the fastest-growing populations in Australia.

“The Parramatta Eels and James Hardie have a deep historic connection, but we also have a shared passion for what this partnership can do for the community. ## Helps to save time, cost and complexity 

The standard 70x35mm dimensions of the [Hardie™ Structural Batten](https://www.jameshardie.com.au/accessory/Hardie-Structural-Batten) suit common frame sizes and are in line with standard structural timber. This means window and door reveals can also be standard sizes, which can help to reduce on-the-wall costs and streamline the entire project. It is underpinned by a third-party accreditation system, which ensures products that carry the logo are certified as ‘genuinely Australian’.

Amongst these employees, 43 have dedicated more than 30 years of service to James Hardie. Our longest serving employee has been with us for an incredible 49 years.

Our manufacturing team work tirelessly to ensure we consistently produce quality fibre cement products with safety, security, and well-being as the highest priority.

__Shyle Castro – Quality Assurance Operator__

Shyle works in our quality lab as a quality assurance operator in Rosehill. She started working at James Hardie in 2019 in the Finishing Day services team. She has since joined the quality lab where she is responsible for collecting, checking and testing the quality of raw materials and cooked product to ensure it meets quality specifications.

__Trent Thompson – Forklift Operator__

Trent started working for James Hardie last year as a forklift driver in the pallet yard, unloading, and loading trucks. He also maintains the disposal area to ensure it is kept clean and safe for everyone.  

*“I like that we have a focus on safety and want everyone to go home to their families safely each day. To me, being ‘Australian Made’ is about building a better future for those creating dream homes and James Hardie helps to contribute to that.”*

__Kenny Boutros – Team Leader__

Kenny immigrated to Australia in 1986 to improve his quality of life and to reconnect with his siblings. He joined James Hardie in 1988 as a machine operator and had the opportunity to study a diploma in management and a diploma in electrical engineering. Over 35 years later, Kenny is now a production team leader. He manages the team’s safety and performance to improve production quality in a safe environment.

__Khanh Luong – Quality Coordinator__

As a refugee from the Asia-Pacific region in the 1980’s, Khanh was looking for a secure job to support his young family. He started off as James Hardie as a general hand, and over the years has tried his hand at many other roles, including machine operator, forklift driver and quality control lab technician. Now, 43 years later, Khanh is a lab coordinator and still enjoying his time at James Hardie.

__Naomi Smith – Stores__

Naomi has been with James Hardie since 2020 in the Stores team, controlling the pallet supply for Carole Park plant. Naomi thrived on the challenges presented by COVID supply chain issues and bushfires that had caused a timber shortage.

__Reginald Ram – Line Manager__

Reginald joined James Hardie when he was just 20 years old. He started at the pipe factory, working in finishing. His team leader at the time recognised Reginald’s developing leadership skills in me and steered him down this management path. Reginald went on to become the youngest team leader in James Hardie Australia’s manufacturing history. Over 24 years later, Reginald is now a line manager on a sheet machine.

## Supporting vulnerable members of the community

The partnership includes opportunities for James Hardie staff to participate in the Brush with Kindness volunteering program, and our Marketing team recently painted and refurbished crisis accommodation for women and children escaping domestic violence as a kick off of this effort.
