Achieving that Hamptons inspired coastal look – no matter the location – was all in the details for the build by Three Birds Renovations. And their latest project, featuring James Hardie’s range of versatile fibre cement products, used board and batten to create the ultimate relaxed, coastal vibes.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Hamptons look is traditionally centred around a neutral colour palette of soothing shades of white, cream, neutral and light grey. This year sees the addition of more colour and contrast.</p>
<p>This trend is captured in a shift away from all-white to the use of more colour, with dark greys, navies and blacks making more of an appearance.</p>
<p>A popular pick being Pantone's Colour of the Year 2020, Classic Blue (19-4052). Describing it as a “reflective” and “restful” colour,  Pantone notes that Classic Blue brings “a sense of peace and tranquillity to the human spirit, offering refuge, aiding concentration and bringing laser-like clarity”. It’s also a fitting complement to the Hamptons relaxing often nautical-themed style.</p>

Heavenly Hamptons – a coastal sea change to an award-winning home

<p>When Trailea and her family decided to swap the hustle and bustle of Sydney life for the coastal quiet of Port Macquarie, never did they dream they would end up with an award-winning Hamptons home that still amazes passers-by three years later.</p>
<p>We chatted to Trailea Stewart about her love of Hamptons style, what it means to her to own an award-winning house, and why she would choose <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/categories/cladding/scyon-linea-weatherboard">Linea™ Weatherboard </a>again and again.</p>
<h2 id="fromthecitytothecoast">FROM THE CITY TO THE COAST</h2>

  <p>“I suppose you could call this our sea change take-two”, jokes Trailea: mother and owner of Trailea Design &amp; Interiors. The Stewart’s permanent sea change take-two came in 2015 after they had already attempted a move from Kenthurst to Port Macquarie in 2006 but ended up moving back to Kenthurst in 2007. Trailea, her husband Phil and their four children knew that this sea change was going to stick when they found the perfect waterfront property overlooking Port Macquarie’s picturesque Hastings River.

<p>As a designer herself, Trailea has been longing to design and build their dream family home for years. The vision she had for their forever family home had always been Hamptons style. “Hamptons homes give the feeling of love and attention to detail. They are genuinely classic and timeless,” says Trailea. For a family as close-knit as the Stewarts, home is certainly where the heart is.</p>

<p>The pictorials of Country Style, Home Beautiful, and House and Garden allowed Trailea to visually translate her vision to building designer James Collins from Collin W Collins Pty Ltd and building company Shipway Constructions. And what a vision that turned out to be. Shingled roof tiles, horizontal weatherboard, white trims, decorative fretwork and coastal colours are just a few of the defining Hamptons style additions that make up the exterior of the Stewart home.

The <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/categories/cladding/scyon-linea-weatherboard">wraparound Linea Weatherboard</a> 180-millimetre in Dulux™ Guild Grey is a standout feature of the home. “We looked at Linea Weatherboard when we lived on our rural property because it’s fire, termite and moisture resistant,” explains Trailea. “When we moved to Port Macquarie there was no question that we’d look at using Linea Weatherboard again”.</p>
<p>The Stewarts chose <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/categories/cladding/scyon-linea-weatherboard">Linea Weatherboard</a> from the Scyon™ Walls range by James Hardie™ for both aesthetic and pragmatic reasons. Firstly, Linea Weatherboard helped them to capture the seamless horizontal lines and shadow effects, created by the 180-millimetre profile, that are the essence of a true Hamptons style exterior. And secondly, they wanted the durability and ease of use, “Linea Weatherboard was quick and easy to install for our builder, which helped with our very tight deadline. The weatherboard came up looking smooth and absolutely beautiful when painted and creates that traditional and timeless coastal feel, which is exactly what Hamptons style is”, says Trailea.

<p>For Trailea, “Hamptons style creates a homely feeling – whether you’re on the outside looking in or on the inside looking out.” From its waterfront location to the covered alfresco eating area, saltwater pool, open-planned kitchen/living area, and upstairs family room, it’s clear that this home is an entertainer’s dream, and this was always Trailea’s vision. Aside from having four kids living under one roof, Trailea’s love of cooking and providing a space for loved ones to gather gave the Stewart’s the perfect excuse to create a homely haven for them and their friends.</p>

<p>If you’d asked Trailea what her goal for creating her dream home was, she certainly wouldn’t have said to become an award-winner at the Building Designers Association of Australia (BDAA). Winning three awards at the 2018 National Awards, including ‘Home with the Best Use of James Hardie Products’ and ‘Winner for New Residential Buildings’, was a very pleasant bonus for Trailea and her family. “I cannot describe how grateful I am knowing that other people appreciate and acknowledge the effort and attention to detail that has gone into our home”, says Trailea.</p>

<p>A dream home can encapsulate many things for different people. For Natalie and Darren Hunt, their dream home was a modern industrial design overlooking Queensland’s Bundaberg coastline, a dream they achieved with the help of outstanding building materials.</p>
<h2 id="aforeverfamilyhome">A FOREVER FAMILY HOME</h2>
<p>As a residential builder himself, Darren and his wife Natalie had always envisioned designing and building their forever family home to share with their two kids. When they spotted a darling cottage just a stone’s throw away from the ocean along Woongarra Scenic Drive in Bargara, they knew they had found the ideal location to lay down roots and mingle their love of the sea with their love of modern designs.</p>
<p>After four years of planning and one year of building, Darren and Natalie’s dream home came to life. A marvel of modern industrial design, their <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/projects/double-storey-new-homes">two-storey family home</a> is not only pleasing on the eye but also an impressive showcase of how advanced building materials can be used to endure harsh weather conditions without sacrificing on style.

<h2 id="coastalmeetsindustrial">COASTAL MEETS INDUSTRIAL</h2>
<p>North Queensland’s climate can be harsh at the best of times, so building a durable home on the doorstep of the ocean makes strong winds and salt corrosion your biggest liabilities. For Darren, with his experiences building in the area as well as his knowledge of advancements in building materials and design trends, choosing Axon Cladding for this build was an easy choice.</p>
<p>Designed to create a strong visual impact with dramatic line and form, Axon Cladding produced that modern and industrial look that Darren and Natalie were aiming for, as well as safeguarding their family home from coastal conditions.</p>

<h2 id="mixingmodernmaterials">MIXING MODERN MATERIALS</h2>
<p>When constructing a home in a coastal climate, choosing the right materials is a critical part of the design process, especially if you have your heart set on a specific design theme. For Darren and Natalie, their vision of creating a modern statement home with industrial and commercial undertones, but also one that would fit in with the surrounding landscape and be able to weather extreme coastal conditions was the ultimate challenge.</p>
<p>The cement composite technology of the Axon Cladding makes it the perfect match for harsh weather conditions including salt corrosion and strong winds, giving Darren and Natalie extra peace of mind living so close to the ocean.</p>

<p>To complement the Axon cladding and HardieFlex sheet, Darren and Natalie incorporated Axent trim for edge treatments and finishes in harmonising colours. These additions gave Darren and Natalie an opportunity to play around with complementary colours, layering of textures and adding an extra layer of protection and exterior appeal to the house.</p>

More surprise creativity in Three Birds Renovations House 12 with Stria Cladding

<p>Three Birds Renovations have used <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/categories/cladding/scyon-stria-cladding">Stria™ Cladding</a> creatively from House 4 up to their current House 12 build (see the gallery at the bottom of this article).</p>
<p>In House 4 they said they’d use it on the stairs. This immediately sent James Hardie’s technical team into a panic. Stria™ Cladding 325mm is impressively thick for fibre cement, at 14mm, but can it be used as stair treads? No. We’re using it to clad the stair walls they clarified.</p>
<p>What they did with it was breath-taking. Even for engineers. They took an ugly dead space, and with the help of a built-in seat, turned it into a thing of beauty.</p>
<p>In House 5 Three Birds Renovations used Stria™ Cladding on the outside of the house. Where it’s meant to be used. Phew. Of course, they wanted to flip it and use it vertically. Back to the technical team. Thankfully, creativity and fibre cement products go hand in hand. The technical team have technical supplements on how to install Stria cladding vertically and at an angle to keep it water-tight, safe and compliant with the building code. But you have to get your builder to login to the <a href="https://myhardies.jameshardie.com.au/log-in">MyHardies</a> library to access it.</p>

The <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/looks/modern/box-modern">Box Modern addition to House</a> 5 contrasts the Heritage-meets-Hamptons <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/categories/cladding/scyon-linea-weatherboard">Linea™ weatherboard</a> house with dramatic effect. As if that wasn’t enough, Three Birds Renovations did another striking interior feature wall in Stria™ Cladding 325mm.</p>

<p>The same Stria™ Cladding 325mm was used again for House 11. This time, it was used conventionally. As cladding. To achieve clean horizontal lines. The only unconventional thing, and it’s not that unconventional, is that it was used to clad over the bricks rather than directly to a frame (and yes, James Hardie has another technical supplement for that).

<p>Leading up to House 12, we pointed out to Bonnie, somewhat nervously, that she’d only used the Stria™ 325mm profile. What about the wider 405mm profile or the 255mm profile which has a beveled edge which we call “splayed’. It’s a softer look, a bit more like a shiplap weatherboard. She was excited and asked, “Can I do it vertically?”. Here we go again.</p>

<p>In House 12 Bonnie has used Stria™ Cladding 255mm Splayed. This profile is thicker, at 16mm. So it has a deep groove which is much more distinctive than <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/categories/cladding/scyon-axon-cladding">Axon™ Cladding</a> 133mm smooth, the typical James Hardie cladding used for the vertical joint look. The strong aesthetic of vertical tongue and groove timber helps achieve the barn look. We absolutely love the earthy boho sage colour of the Dulux Pozieres paint. It feels fresh and calming. A welcome departure from common achromatic (black, white and grey) colour palettes.</p>
<p>While the timber aesthetic is great for a barn house look, timber tends to warp, swell and rot. It starts to look old quickly due to knots, splinters and the splits that happen over time. It can suffer from termites and needs to be repainted more often. Fibre cement on the other hand, is an engineered product that uses cement. The boards are perfectly straight, smooth and uniform and last a long time as they’re resistant to damage from moisture, termites and even fire (making them good for bushfire zones and fire and acoustic walls).</p>
<p>We’re currently working with Three Birds Renovations on House 13 and 14. We’re super excited. Well, maybe not the technical team.</p>

Defining Modern Australian Hamptons

<p>The residential streets of Putney in Sydney might not be the first place you’d expect to see the transformation of international design trends. However, this was essential for the Cheung family when they put a truly Australian twist on the well-loved Hamptons look, during the renovation of their boring brick house into their dream home.</p>
<p>“We wanted to capture the coastal glamour, openness and indoor-outdoor lifestyle of the Hamptons, but make it more our own,” says homeowner Catherine Cheung.</p>
<p>Taking 10 months, the renovation included the addition of a second storey, an entire exterior transformation and the extension of the generous rear balcony.</p>

<p>The dated red brick façade was rendered over and painted a more contemporary grey. The second storey extension is what gives the building the charming, Australian Hamptons feel. It starts with James Hardie’s <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/categories/cladding/scyon-linea-weatherboard">Linea™ Weatherboards</a> painted a neutral tone. Then contrast is created by an abundance of white trim such as window frames fattened with James Hardie’s <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/categories/cladding/scyon-axent-trim">Axent™ Trim</a>.</p>
<p>“In the Hamptons they use timber weatherboards or shingles that grey and deteriorate, as Americans are used to regularly recladding their homes. We wanted weatherboards that stay looking good and are more durable for the Aussie elements,” says the Cheung’s builder, Damian Mitchell of DF Hoult Constructions. “The Linea Weatherboards give us that same textured shadow-line look we wanted, plus they are lower maintenance than traditional materials, so less work for us in the long run.”</p>
<p>James Hardie’s <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/categories/cladding/scyon-linea-weatherboard">Linea™ Weatherboard</a>  is made from premium fibre cement and is resistant to damage from termites, fire and moisture. The boards are also primed and ready to be painted in any colour to get the desired look.</p>

<p>The addition of the second storey has extended the home, allowing for the creation of an uncluttered, breezy, Hamptons-esque floorplan. This was also made possible by the use of the premium fibre cement, <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/categories/cladding/scyon-linea-weatherboard">Linea™ Weatherboard</a>, which is lighter than traditional brick allowing for easy upward extensions, without the cost of structural support required by heavy masonry.</p>
<p>Inside, the open plan living area addresses the limited size of the previous home and embodies Australia’s and the Hamptons’ shared love of indoor-outdoor living and entertaining, continues Catherine:</p>
<p>“Although the initial living area was very small, the home’s drawcard was that it backed onto a beautiful park,” she says. “My husband and I love entertaining and opening up the living area onto the balcony to create an indoor-outdoor area was a must for the renovation.”</p>
<p>Doubling the size of the existing elevated rear balcony, <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/hardiedeck-system">Hardie™ Deck</a> was used to cantilever the deck out beyond the roof of the basement garage. This has created room for the addition of an outdoor kitchen area and full dining set that the whole family can enjoy. The boards also help to create a continuity between the interior and exterior by mimicking the floorboards in the indoor living area.</p>

<p>To complete the look and add all-weather protection, the new balcony is covered with a gable roof with a beautiful vaulted ceiling in white, which marries to the window and roofline trims and continues the Hamptons theme. This outdoor area has been finished with <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/categories/interior-linings/hardiegroove-lining">Hardie™ Groove Lining</a> vertical groove sheets to continue the texture seen on the house and Linea Weatherboard lined privacy walls to either side.</p>
<p>“The covered outdoor room is a must to make the Hamptons look work under our harsh summer sun. It also created a great opportunity to add more of the layered detail you see in the New York holiday homes. I also love the way that the weatherboard look of the privacy wall adds an Aussie sensibility similar to Queenslander homes,” adds Catherine.</p>
<p>By combining a colour palette and love of varying textures and details directed by New York sensibilities and new modern materials that meet the needs of local home design functional needs and tastes, Catherine has managed to put a lot of Hamptons glamour into a modern Australian block and home without compromising her family’s style.</p>
<p>“We love the finished home. It’s part Hamptons, part Australian, but most importantly it’s all ours. When I look at it, I can see our style and the life we want to live with our friends and family,” concludes Catherine.</p>
