Hardie™ Oblique™ Cladding Redefines Contemporary Living with a Modern Extension

A recent building project for builder Matt Menichelli, from <a href="https://elevatebuilding.com.au/">Elevate Building Group</a>, was to transition a much-loved family home into a generous inner-city dwelling. The stunning result is a modern home reflective of its heritage while delivering key living areas that are open and connected through a mixed material palette.
Matt, who has also been a builder on The Block said, “A young family needed to adapt their inner-city home to suit their growing needs. Located in the vibrant Melbourne suburb of Yarraville, the home, a double fronted timber cottage, required a clever rework and expansion of its existing footprint to accommodate the next stage of life for the homeowners.”
The new extension hugs the long southern boundary, opening key spaces, which all have a view to the garden. In building the modern extension, the exterior building material was key to the successful integration of the original home and the new space.

“The individuality of the modern cladding profile extension with the original <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/applications/weatherboards">weatherboard</a> at the front contributes to the visually stunning exterior that feels connected and intentional, and this was very important to our client,” said Matt. The colour choice was also an important part of bringing the old and new together. The original weatherboards were sanded and painted white, and in contrast, the Hardie™ Oblique™ Cladding which comes pre-primed and ready to paint, was painted a deep French Blue, adding to the architectural feel of the renovation.
The profile of Hardie™ Oblique™ Cladding mixes shadows and highlights to provide interest and depth delivering a bold modern look. Square and angled edges cast shadows that bring rhythm and depth to walls. Defined by its bold proportions, the cladding enables the creation of standout, one-of-a-kind facades. In a deliberate contrast to the horizontal original weatherboards, the vertical cladding has a similar appearance to standing seam metal cladding, but with the durability of Hardie™ fibre cement product. “Hardie™ Oblique™ Cladding is available in two board widths, being 200mm and 300mm, which can be alternated for a unique design or installed consistently for a traditional look, which is the design style our homeowners were looking for,” said Matt.

The Elevate Building team worked with Bowen’s who provided all the building materials and hardware, and were able to advise on appropriate systems for the cladding to make installation easier, including the new horizontal Hardie™ Castellated Battens, a cost-effective and simple batten for vertical installation. The Hardie™ Castellated Battens also allow for ventilation and drainage through the cavity. “The systems streamlined the build, allowing for a more efficient installation and enabled us to stay on schedule and budget,” said Matt. “Having a reliable supplier is imperative. As part of our team, we really rely on them to educate us on new products on the market as well as sourcing building materials for each project so there are no delays.”

Stria™ Cladding delivers a contemporary finish and savings on costs and time

This residential project looked towards Hardie™ fibre cement products to add a modern extension to an old period house to transform the way the homeowners lived.
The brief to builder Peter Johnstone from <a href="http://drakebuild.com.au/">DrakeBuild</a> was to build a modern extension on an old period home to make a beautiful, functional family home that offered space for entertainment and to accommodate family living. Adding visual interest to the outdoor space was also high on the homeowner’s wish list, as the new exterior walls formed the backdrop to the outdoor entertainment space. 
In a considered approach, a tired 1930’s Californian Bungalow has been revitalised to retain the heritage front of the home and a new modernised extension to the rear, in what is now a ‘forever home’.

In building the modern extension, the exterior building material was key to the successful integration of the original home and the new extension. “To bring to life the contemporary style it was a unanimous decision by the homeowner and architect, Lyndall Williams of <a href="https://www.my-architect.com.au/">My Architect</a>, that Stria™ Cladding was used on the home. From a builder’s perspective, we always use Hardie™ products when it comes to <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/fibre-cement">fibre cement cladding</a>, as it’s a superior product to anything else on the market and provides building cost efficiencies,” says Peter.

“Using Stria™ Cladding 405mm provided extensive benefits not only to the homeowner in regards to design possibilities and long term durability, but also to the building team in terms of ease of use and speed to complete the project and let the homeowners enjoy their new house,” says Peter.

Peter notes that it only took two workers a few days to install all the Stria™ Cladding. “From a business perspective the ease of installation is such a huge advantage. The wide cladding sheets cover more area, making installation quicker, and the ‘secret fixing’ with screws being hidden behind the overlapping sheets, means there’s no holes for the painters to have to fill. Additionally, each panel comes pre-sealed and can be finished simply with two coats of paint in any colour of choice, offering additional time savings with painters. It’s a smart business choice to use a product such as Stria.”
“Using Hardie™ products and accessories makes the job quicker, as they all work together hand in hand. On this project we used Stria™ aluminium internal and external corner flashings, Hardie™ Blade, Hardie™ Drive Screws and Hardie™ Joint Sealant.” 
Assisting with the build being on time and on budget was local hardware provider, <a href="https://www.parkroad.net.au/">Park Road Timber</a>, who has worked with DrakeBuild for over ten years. Peter says, “Having a reliable supplier is imperative. As part of our team, we really rely on them to educate us on new products on the market as well as sourcing building materials for each project so there are no delays. My rep, Anthony Stephens goes above and beyond to assist us.”
“This project was extremely satisfying,” says Peter. “The homeowner’s respect for the bungalow’s past and desire for a modern extension, sees a marriage of styles. The homeowner is thrilled with how the project turned out. I love the rear extension, the high ceilings that flowed through to the outside eave that is also lined with <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/scyon-stria-cladding">Stria™ Cladding</a>. Stria™ Cladding allowed us to achieve the <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/modern-look">modern look</a> extension the client was after, as well as, importantly, saving us time and money on the project.”
Peter concludes, “Everything came together perfectly and I really think we not only met but exceeded the brief. With its modern building materials and systems, James Hardie shows how great planning and product can lead to a great business proposition as well.

Ground floor extensions are twice as common as upper floor additions.

Pushing out works only if there’s available yard space. Floor space can be added starting with a slab on flat ground or on pilings on a sloping site. Fibre cement cladding is on-frame allowing the construction of high performance walls with a width of just 100mm saving up to 130mm of floor space compared with brick veneer cladding which needs to sit on a slab.

You don’t have to renovate with the same style or materials as your home was originally designed for. Who want’s more small, stuffy and dark rooms? It’s common to have renovation additions done in a modern materials and in a contemporary style which encourages light, breeze, open plan living and alfresco dining areas. While the front of the home may have a heritage feel the back can be in a modern style. James Hardie cladding products on-frame which prompts opportunities for a modern design. While it’s important not to over-capitalize, you should consider the needs of your family over resale value. Renovate your home so it’s a sanctuary. A safe and warm space to rejuvenate from a busy modern life. Make a place you love to come home to and include some design variation. Dave and Bindi Riley loved the location of their well-worn, Gymea Bay house in Sydney’s Sutherland Shire. Their children were settled into the area and the family had a tight knit social network close-by. But their home was in desperate need of repair.

The logical solution for the Riley’s was to <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/renovations">renovate</a>, but rather than undertake a simple renovation, they worked with Catherine Heraghty at interior design studio <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/partnerships/the-stables">The Stables</a> to devise a complete overhaul of the property. This included a new floor plan, new bathrooms and kitchen and reimagined outside areas that were fit for an active family of four.

The Riley’s had a clear vision for the design inspiration of their home. They wanted something different to the plethora of <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/hamptons-look">Hamptons</a>-inspired houses seen in The Shire and loved the appeal of a more <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/modern-look">modern</a> industrial look.
“Dave and Bindi were keen to have a design that felt industrial but still modern, so we started preparing the concept. We wanted something that didn’t feel too strong or harsh for the landscape. I would say we landed on a ‘soft industrial’ concept – <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/partnerships/the-stables">The Stables</a>’ version of modern industrial style,” Catherine said.

Soft industrial has all the strong, masculine elements of industrial design but it is balanced with softer finishes that prevents it from overpowering a space. The home was designed with a purposeful modernity – the soft industrial aesthetic was anchored by the Riley’s need for a robust house that would stand up to the needs of a young, active family.
This was Catherine’s first foray into <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/blog/talking-scandi-barn-with-catherine-from-the-stables">designing a façade</a>, so it made sense to her to use materials she was familiar and therefore more confident with.
“We used <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/hardie-fine-texture-cladding">Hardie™ Fine Texture Cladding</a> on the entire exterior for its subtlety and durability. The smooth natural sand texture of the product allowed for the stronger, more industrial elements of the façade such as the timber posts and black balustrade to standout as features while softening the overall look,” explained Catherine.

 “The fact that we won’t get any cracking like you risk with render but were able to achieve the same appearance as a rendered finish was also very appealing to the owners,” she continued.

However, the overriding consideration for the façade design was <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/blog/outside-in-exteriors-and-the-importance-of-first-appearances">street appeal</a> and ensuring that the house was interesting enough but did not feel disjointed in the overall streetscape.
“It is a very unique looking home and we designed it that way, but it also needed to look like it belonged in its own street, so it was important that we struck a balance between the stronger industrial and more subtle design elements,” Catherine said.
“I’m a designer who relies heavily on texture to create a sense of warmth and interest and <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/hardie-fine-texture-cladding">Hardie™ Fine Texture Cladding</a> added just enough interest without detracting from the main features. It really was key to perfecting the soft-industrial look,” she added.

When choosing colours for the façade, Catherine and her team were able to play with the effects of the changing light throughout the day to really showcase the softness that the cladding provided.
“We painted three large samples of the pre-primed cladding, sat it on-site and viewed it at different times of the day to see how the light affected the colour in the morning, afternoon and evening,” Catherine explained.
“It’s so important to understand that colour can behave differently throughout the day, we held the painted samples against other finishes on the exterior to ensure everything felt harmonious. We wouldn’t have had the opportunity to sample colours so comprehensively if we hadn’t used Hardie™ Fine Texture Cladding,” she added.

The entire build took six months to complete and both the Riley’s and Catherine were extremely pleased with the outcome. What they achieved was the result of a clear design vision, the courage to stand out from their suburban status quo and the use of the right materials and colours.

Catherine comments, “I’m so happy with the final result, we’re not known for the industrial look, and I felt we not only met the brief but we created a beautiful sense of cohesion between the interior and exterior of the home.”
“I can’t wait to design more façades; I’m feeling more confident in this space and knowing the Hardie™ product so well makes it possible to visualise the end result – which makes it easier to recommend to clients.”

A Renovation for the Ages:  Discover how this ‘90s Suburban House was Transformed into a Spacious, Multi-Generational Masterpiece

Situated on the southern edge of metropolitan Sydney and backing on to the Royal National Park, this Bundeena home is the embodiment of a modern <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/renovations">home renovation</a> adding value, style, and a place for family to come together. 
Homeowner Jen and her three children live in the home but recently welcomed Jen’s parents which was a defining moment in making the choice to do a second storey extension to the home. Originally a <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/renovations">single-storey home</a>, the house has been transformed into a modern two-storey home where multi-generations can live comfortably. The new second level is practically self-contained, providing a space for Jen’s parents with bedrooms, living areas, kitchen, bathroom, and laundry included to optimise privacy and provide the family with options for years to come.

Data from the Housing Industry Association indicates such renovations are surging. Australians want renovations which add space and increase the value of their home. Home additions which can accommodate dynamic extended families have driven the annual growth rate of alterations and additions valued over $10,000 to 111 per cent. In the 2020/21 financial year alone there was $43.0 billion worth of renovation activity (HIA National Outlook, Spring 2021). 
“The façade is your first impression of a home, your welcome, and it’s incredibly important to get the scale and materiality right here to make sure you are building a home with an inviting space that homeowners want to be in,” says Graham Irving from Arctec Circle Building Design, who worked with Jen to ensure the design of the addition provided the <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/modern-homes-forecast">modern look</a> that appealed to her and updated the design of the original dated house.

For inspiration, Jen accessed designs online, visited display homes, downloaded <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/renovationguide">James Hardie’s renovation guide</a> and also viewed the style of house in surrounding neighbourhoods’ new builds so her new home would fit into the streetscape and softly blend into the bushland just metres from the back of the property. “Living on the edge of the Royal National Park, we didn’t want our home to stand out too much. Harmony with the natural setting we wake up to every day was important to us,” said Jen.

Giving the house a modern and warm vibe, a <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/looks/modern/mixed-cladding">mixed cladding look</a> was chosen featuring neutral cladding paint colours that reflects the natural bushland surrounds. <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/hardie-fine-texture-cladding">Hardie™ Fine Texture Cladding</a> fibre cement panels provided the consistent embedded cement render texture look and was ideal as the primary exterior building material making an impact with its clean lines and contemporary roof line form to deliver a modern design aesthetic. To add some drama and detail, <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/scyon-axon-cladding">Axon™ Cladding</a> vertical groove cladding has been used as a contrasting secondary cladding feature on the front of the house at the entrance and around the living room window and at the rear of the house where the home opens to decks on each level from which to enjoy the view of the National Park which stretches until the horizon.

Both the render cladding and vertical groove cladding appealed to Jen, but particularly, the Hardie™ Fine Texture Cladding after it was suggested by her builder James Powditch from J.P. Build. “I really liked the simple but styled textured panelling look provided by Hardie™ Fine Texture Cladding,” said Jen. The home’s original exterior was rendered brick veneer and the decision was made to cover the original brickwork with the cladding to ensure a continuous look, offering a contemporary transformation of the house. “Using the cladding instead of building with brick and then rendering was a wise decision as not only would rendering have increased both the cost and build time of the renovation, but we have all the benefits of the cladding material.” Despite their different aesthetics both cladding styles come in large panels which are installed in a similar manner which helps building efficiency.

The Bushfire Attack Level (BAL) of both cladding types was ideal for the home’s location. “With our home located on the edge of the Royal National Park, we are in the worst bushfire category (BAL FZ), so knowing that Hardie™ Fine Texture Cladding and Axon™ Cladding had a strong fire rating put my mind at ease,” said Jen. Windows also had to include shutters for the same fire safety reasons.

For a timeless look, Jen has chosen a minimalist colour palette exterior paint colours keeping it to two colours and choosing a low-sheen paint that works with the modern profile to give a contemporary matte look. For this project, the Hardie™ Fine Texture Cladding, which is shipped pre-primed and ready to paint, has been painted in a dark Taubmans’ Wallaby to match the Colorbond roof. Axon™ Cladding, with its striking vertical lines, colour contrasts with the rest of the build by being painted in Dulux’s Winter Fog.

90s Suburban House Transformed to a Multi-Generational Masterpiece

How a modern extension increased space and indoor-outdoor living for this California Bungalow

For Anita and her husband, the purchase of this characterful 1930s California Bungalow in the Melbourne suburb of Bentleigh revealed itself as an opportunity to build a dream home that was as faithful to its history as it would be speaking to modern family living for generations to come.

As the driving force behind the renovation, Anita took the time to find not just a home in the right location but one that she could instantly connect with in realising its full design potential and possibilities. 
Anita explains, “I had a checklist. It had to be a certain size, a certain location, and have good bones. And I had a gut feeling. I knew when I walked straight in. I knew what I wanted. Open planned, with a high and raked ceiling”. For Anita, it had all the ingredients for an open and light-filled modern family home, a space where indoor and outdoor living could seamlessly flow. 
<h2 id="anuncompromisingvision">AN UNCOMPROMISING VISION</h2>
From the very start, Anita had the clearest of visions for what she wanted to create and she also knew precisely how she would achieve it. For Anita, there would be no compromises when it came to creating this lifestyle-enhancing modern extension, especially with the choice of materials to make it possible.

I’ve used it before on my last home– right on the coast and it gets battered by nature. I knew it was durable. And I love the wide-board profile”.

With a clear brief on material choice for the main feature– the asymmetric, raked ceiling and connection of the indoor living area to the backyard, Anita engaged the services of architect Lyndall Williams of My Architect. Together, they created a space that would be her expression of a dream modern home, while at the same time, keeping the façade of the bungalow faithful to its original 1930s period. Anita explains, “I was very keen to find a period house and restore it, protecting it for the future”. She continues, “but I really wanted something different to distinguish the front of the house to the rear of the house”. And different by design it was.

<h2 id="themakingsofadreammodernhome">THE MAKINGS OF A DREAM MODERN HOME</h2>
Amongst the mix of bold and subtle design cues found throughout the house is Anita’s intentional juxtaposition between the front façade and rear extension. Her transition from horizontal weatherboards to vertical lines at the back of the house added a sense of increased space and the projected feeling of height to the open ceiling and living areas. Anita explains, “The original weatherboards were horizontal, and I really wanted something vertical and different to distinguish between the front part and the back of the home”. This was a simple design statement brought on by Anita’s respect for the Bungalow’s past and desire for a modern extension, one that was made possible thanks to the versatility and application flexibility of <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/scyon-stria-cladding">Stria™ Cladding</a>.

 She continues, “Having worked with the product before helped to nail what I wanted the end result to look like. I was able to achieve the angles and shapes I wanted for the whole back extension”. For Anita, it was an opportunity to let this California Bungalow back extension follow a new rhythm without the durability issues of timber or associated weight worries of masonry.

<h2 id="backyourself">BACK YOURSELF</h2>
Anita’s journey started with a feeling. A feeling of wanting to create a home that ushered in all the emotions found within a space that’s open, family-focused, and full of that wow factor. And while being armed with an understanding of the materiality and affordability of what she was working with appears to have given her greater confidence in the design process, it’s something Anita believes is possible for anyone looking to build new or renovate.

Speaking from experience with this project and others via her business <a href="https://www.instagram.com/mana.projects/">@mana.projects</a>, Anita has three simple, yet fundamental rules she believes everyone should follow:

 <li>Be clear on your vision. When it comes to design inspiration, we are spoilt for choice. With the advent of social media and online design resources, you can instantly create the space and lifestyle you want through visual mood boards. Your architect and builder will thank you for it, especially during the initial design phase when it is critical that they understand your brief and vision.</li>
 <li>Speaking of architects and builders, it’s important they share your passion for the project and that the working relationship is built on trust. While things might not always go to plan, make sure you find people you can are comfortable having tough conversation with and a team that have a good communication style. It’s all about relationships and having an open dialogue.</li>
 <li>Budget does come into it: Speak to your builder, but also do some research yourself. Understand what materials are available and the pros and cons to each of them. And remember, when selecting the right material or product for your project, consider things beyond just how they look. Think durability, maintenance and ultimately how the application of the product adds to your home and your lifestyle. </li>

Living next door to a sibling may not be everyone’s cup of tea however, sisters Alexandra and Gemma recognised the benefits of creating a forever home to accommodate both their families far outweighed the negative. With the affordability of housing in Sydney on the decline and rising financial costs, the sisters started to explore alternative options and struck upon the idea of duplex living. The Great Ocean Reno: A seamless integration of modern coastal design with original '30s charm

When Lucy Glade-Wright, Designer at Hunting for George and her husband Jonno Rodd decided to renovate, their vision was to transform a 1930s weatherboard beach shack on The Great Ocean Road, Lorne Victoria, into a relaxed holiday haven with enough room to accommodate their family and friends.

No strangers to renovations; not only did they artfully restore the home, but they added an impressive extension turning it into a five-bedroom, five-bathroom Beach House fit for purpose.
“We’ve renovated a few houses now, but this was definitely our biggest project,” said Lucy.

According to Jonno, the exterior transformation of the build needed to reflect a modern coastal design that complemented the existing home and its environment. They also wanted to future-proof the home to make it more efficient.
“Part of the exterior design requirements from council were to preserve the look of the existing building. The top half of the exterior had somewhat flat panelling, while the lower half had standard weatherboards. So, to get a modern look with the softness and charm of the original home we used <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/hardie-fine-texture-cladding">Hardie™ Fine Texture Cladding</a> on the upper level and <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/scyon-linea-weatherboard">Linea™ Weatherboards</a> below, both by James Hardie,” said Jonno.

Lucy and Jonno chose Hardie™ Fine Texture Cladding for the upper level of the Beach House because of its lightweight composition which makes the product incredibly easy to install and maintain.
The bush setting and close proximity to the unforgiving elements of the ocean meant that the exterior finishes not only had to look amazing, but they also needed to be fit for purpose, low maintenance and durable.

 Jonno explains, “We are in a BAL29 fire rating area, so it was very important to use materials that are resistant to fire and comply with the National Construction Code… The home is also close to the ocean and exposed to a lot of different weather conditions, so the main consideration for us in addition to fire ratings was longevity. Linea™ Weatherboards by James Hardie combines the durability and low maintenance of fibre cement with the design flexibility to achieve your vision. By using the Hardie™ exterior cladding products, we got the best of both worlds", he said.

Lucy’s background in interiors and design meant that the couple had a very clear idea on what they wanted in terms of the design and functionality of the house. They had an architect work on the basic drawings for council approval and added assurance they were adhering to the council’s guidelines. Beyond that, Jonno and Lucy managed the entire build themselves.
Jonno said, “The whole process was fairly straightforward, my brother works in construction management, so he helped me manage timelines as well as working on the tools with Lucy and I”. 
Lucy painted most of the façade on her own and had just three days to paint the exterior before the scaffolding had to come down.

"The Linea™ Weatherboards were fantastic to paint because they didn't require any prep-work; they come pre-primed, and all of the nail holes are hidden because the boards layer over each other. All I had to do was make sure they were clean, and I could paint straight over the top of them, saving me lots of valuable time,” Lucy explained.
"When it comes to creating a modern coastal colour palette it's all about fresh whites and classic greys, so we combined Tranquil Retreat Dulux Weathershield on both the Linea™ Weatherboards and Hardie™ Fine Texture CLadding and Natural White Dulux Aquanamel on the window frames", said Lucy.

The project took 12 months to complete, and the end result is a seamless combination of modern coastal features and original charm.
