<p>The Hamptons look is traditionally centred around a neutral colour palette of soothing shades of white, cream, neutral and light grey. This year sees the addition of more colour and contrast.</p>
<p>This trend is captured in a shift away from all-white to the use of more colour, with dark greys, navies and blacks making more of an appearance.</p>
<p>A popular pick being Pantone's Colour of the Year 2020, Classic Blue (19-4052). Describing it as a “reflective” and “restful” colour,  Pantone notes that Classic Blue brings “a sense of peace and tranquillity to the human spirit, offering refuge, aiding concentration and bringing laser-like clarity”. It’s also a fitting complement to the Hamptons relaxing often nautical-themed style.</p>
<p>While these darker shades have, in the past, been used for cladding colour, in 2020 they are forecast to feature more prominently. Three Birds Renovations’ top 5 tips for the perfect outdoor entertaining space this summer

<p>Summer is just around the corner and we’re so excited that the homeowners of <a href="https://www.threebirdsrenovations.com/house12">House 12</a> are back in their newly renovated home and ready to enjoy it.</p>
<p>When creating an outdoor entertaining space for a home, we like to start by dividing the entire available space into different zones, with each zone having a distinct reason for being.</p>
<p>It’s a great way to make the best use of all areas of your backyard. Here’s how we did it at House 12:</p>
<h2 id="outdoorbar">Outdoor bar</h2>
<p>Move over humble backyard shed, welcome outdoor bar! It’s the new must-have item popping up in backyards this summer. With the COVID-led trend of entertaining at home, we wanted to put the under-utilised shed to good use so turned it into a bar (leaving room out the back for storage) to extend the outdoor entertaining space.</p>
<p>Despite being an old shed in its previous life, this beautiful little bar shows no remnants of that now. She’s dressed up to the nines with a built-in bar, wine fridge, plenty of tiled goodness and gorgeous <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/scyon-axon-cladding">Axon™ Cladding</a> walls to boot (both inside and out!) . We love how easy it is to reclad over something like a garden shed. Just remove the old timber cladding and nail Axon in its place.</p>
<h2 id="bbq">BBQ</h2>
<p>It wouldn’t be an Aussie backyard without a BBQ so, we built our own BBQ area using breeze blocks as a feature for a resort-like vibe. We used <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/scyon-axon-cladding">Axon™ Cladding</a> for the splashback behind the BBQ. James Hardie’s fibre cement is deemed non-combustible and is regularly used in bushfire zones and in fire resistant walls, making it the perfect material for this outdoor splashback.</p>
<p>To create the built-in BBQ we use James Hardie<a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/villaboard-lining">Villaboard™ Lining</a> and <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/hardiepanel-compressed-sheet">Hardie™ Panel Compressed Sheet </a> (an extra dense sheet typically used for bathroom flooring but it can also be used for hacks like bench seating when timber won’t be durable enough. And of course the breeze blocks and a tiled benchtop to finish off the area.</p>
<h2 id="servery">Servery</h2>
<p>The servery is always an important feature in our homes, so much so that it deserves its own point!</p>
<p>Whether you prefer a gas strut or bi-fold windows, the sheer motion of flinging open the servery window/s immediate lets a breath of fresh air into your kitchen and extends it to the outdoor space. It creates an additional bar area for guests or family to perch, chat and drink or sit and enjoy a casual meal.</p>
<h2 id="diningroom">Dining room</h2>
<p>Defined by the <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/hardiedeck-system">Hardie™ Deck</a> underfoot, the dining area is covered by a pergola so if it starts to rain while you’re entertaining you can still dine alfresco.</p>
<p>We chose bench seating to fit as many people as possible around the table and they tuck underneath when not in use to save space.</p>
<h2 id="seatinggalore">Seating galore</h2>
<p>We created an alfresco lounge area by framing the zone with more gorgeous breeze blocks and joined the walls with a beach seat (our fave form of furniture for getting lots of bums on seats). This fabulous bench seat was made with a range of James Hardie fibre cement sheets – <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/villaboard-lining">Villaboard™ Lining</a> and <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/hardiepanel-compressed-sheet">Hardie™ Panel Compressed Sheet </a> and rendered to complete the look.</p>
<p>Then we added plenty more seating options and a central coffee table for grazing plates and drinks.</p>
<p>A hanging chair has become one of our favourite items in our homes and we couldn’t resist hanging one off the BBQ area pergola her too. It’s so relaxing while still in the middle of the action, we think the adults and kids alike will be fighting for this prime seating option!</p>

Our Contemporary Cottage Transformation By Three Birds Renovations

<p>Situated in Windsor, a historic town north-west of Sydney, <a href="https://www.threebirdsrenovations.com/house12">House 12</a> is a cute little cottage that was ripe for a contemporary update.</p>
<p>Our vision for the home was a #contemporarycottage which, for us, meant lots of warmth, natural tones and textures, coupled with practical features like plenty of storage, which every family needs.</p>
<p>We’re huge fans of James Hardie’s diverse range of fibre cement cladding products because we love that it can be used to give the look of timber or the look of render, depending on your vision.</p>

<h2 id="exterior">Exterior</h2>
<p>For the exterior of the house, we wanted to pay homage to the history of the area and the original cottage whilst making it more contemporary and creating a gorgeous, low-maintenance home for the busy modern family who live here.</p>
<p>We replaced the old timber cladding with brand spanking new James Hardie Stria™ and installed it vertically rather than horizontally to help put the ‘contemporary’ in to Contemporary Cottage. We chose the wider 255mm <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/scyon-stria-cladding">Stria™ Cladding</a> board width which also helps to create the contemporary look and throws deeper shadow lines for added detail.</p>
<p>Unlike timber, which can warp and have split paint over time, fibre cement lasts longer and the paint will stay looking fresher for many years to come too.</p>
<p>Out the back, we used Axon™ Cladding, another fibre cement product that comes in panels (rather than individual shiplap boards, like <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/scyon-stria-cladding">Stria™ Cladding</a>) and gives the look of perfectly crafted vertical joint timber. We chose <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/scyon-axon-cladding">Axon™ Cladding</a> Grained (as opposed to the smooth finish we used internally) for extra texture.</p>
<p>Painted Dulux ‘Pozieres’, a subtle sage green, ­and trimmed with Axent window trims in Dulux ‘White’ Dune, the cottage has a whole new lease on life.</p>
<h2 id="interiortouches">Interior touches</h2>
<p>Fibre cement is ideal for areas like kitchens and laundries because it resists moisture and doesn’t rot like timber does. Gotta love a product that practical as well as pretty!</p>
<p>We just can’t get enough of <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/scyon-axon-cladding">Axon™ Cladding</a> and find a place to use it in all of our homes. In the kitchen at House 12, we lined the walls with <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/scyon-axon-cladding">Axon™ Cladding</a> Smooth to create interest and texture and replicated this on the interior walls of the shed-cum-bar, all painted Dulux ‘Clay Pipe’ for dreamy, luxe vibes.</p>
<p>For added wow factor we carried the Axon™ Cladding Smooth panels along the bench seating throughout the home as well. Did we mention we can’t get enough of this product?!</p>
<h2 id="decking">Decking</h2>
<p>HardieDeck has been a mainstay in many of our renovations for many years now and we’ve used it again at House 12 for the alfresco dining space. We love that it’s low maintenance, won’t splinter little feet and looks fabulous too!</p>
<p>Sealed in a gorgeous warm sandy colour it creates a clean look to connect indoors and outdoors, without risking damage from the elements. Smooth, wide boards with clean lines and new finishing boards (to create a bordered edge – a first for us!) complete the look.</p>
<p>The combination of James Hardie cladding and colour throughout the home helped create the Contemporary Cottage of our homeowners’ dreams.</p>

Reaching great heights with vertical cladding

<p>Apart from its durability and good looks, one of the things we love most about <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/categories/cladding">James Hardie’s cladding</a> products is the versatility. In our renovations, we’ve installed cladding both horizontally and vertically… and in the case of <a href="https://www.threebirdsrenovations.com/house5">House 5</a>, both ways in the same area!</p>
<p>The vision for our most recent renovation, <a href="https://www.threebirdsrenovations.com/house12">House 12</a>, was to transform a cute but tired little house into a contemporary family home. We used James Hardie external cladding throughout the property to bring interest and detail to spaces, on both the exterior and interior, through the shadow lines created by the cladding, with the common fact that it was installed vertically.</p>
<p>Here’s how we used cladding vertically to help bring our vision to life, inside and out:</p>
<h2 id="exterior">Exterior</h2>
<p>Speak to any real estate agent and they’ll tell you the importance of street appeal. Updating the façade of your home contributes to how much passers-by engage with your home and to the appeal of the entire street. Façade makeovers often inspire neighbours to upgrade their facades too!</p>
<p>One of the first things you notice when you approach <a href="https://www.threebirdsrenovations.com/house12">House 12</a> from the street, is the <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/scyon-stria-cladding">Stria™ Cladding</a>. We believe you’ve only got one chance to make a first impression and the we chose this cladding, along with the tiles, windows (framed in Axent trim) and paint to work together to create the wow factor on the facade of this home.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/scyon-stria-cladding">Stria™ Cladding</a> is a shiplap board, which is like a tongue and groove system where the boards slot into each other. Stria™ Cladding boards are thick and the shiplap joint creates a much wider, deeper and more distinct groove than <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/scyon-axon-cladding">Axon™ Cladding</a>.</p>
<p>We replaced the old windows and wanted to thicken up the frames to make them really pop. Normal window trims are only 65mm wide so we used <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/scyon-axent-trim">Axent trim</a> (89mm x 19mm) to fatten out window and contrast the cladding. This has a perfectly smooth surface and being fibre cement it won’t warp, split or texture in the harsh sun.</p>
<p>Selecting materials for the facade of your home is an important decision, for both aesthetic and practical reasons. We love fibre cement for many reasons:</p>
<ul>
<li>It’s a clever builder material that can be reminiscent of a number of looks (timber or render)</li>
<li>It is light enough to follow the frame and not have to rest its weight on the ground</li>
<li>It nails on to the frame of the home, so it’s easy to install</li>
<li>The cement in the product gives it an enduring nature more like bricks because it’s resistant to fire, rot, termites and damage from moisture.</li>
<li>It gives design flexibility and the ability to be enduring – the perfect ingredients for timeless design.</li>
</ul>
<p>We wanted to take a few years off this old girl’s age to help put the ‘contemporary’ in to contemporary cottage. To do this, we replaced the old timber cladding with <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/scyon-stria-cladding">Stria™ Cladding</a> and installed it vertically rather than horizontally for a smart contemporary look. We love James Hardie exterior cladding products because the fibre cement composition means they are much more durable than timber, meaning less maintenance for our busy homeowners. #notjustgoodlooks</p>
<p>At <a href="https://www.threebirdsrenovations.com/house5">House 5</a>, we created a modern extension on an old cottage, using Stria both horizontally and vertically to define the modern and the traditional. We love the contrast created using the same product, installed differently.</p>
<h2 id="interior">Interior</h2>
<p>Step inside <a href="https://www.threebirdsrenovations.com/house12">House 12</a> and you’ll see that we’ve carried the vertical lines with the installation of <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/scyon-axon-cladding">Axon™ Cladding</a> Smooth on the interior walls. The benefit of using fibre cement vertical groove sheets is that they’re impact resistant, the won’t swell and warp if they get wet or if it’s too humid (perfect for kitchens and laundries!). And they won’t let off any harmful volatile gasses as they’re not made up of glue.</p>
<p>In the same way that vertical stripes on clothes give the illusion of a leaner, taller physique, installing cladding vertically can give make lower ceilings feel higher, too. Aside from the gorgeous detail and layering it provides in the kitchen and bar, we chose to run our Axon cladding from top-to-toe to give the impression of height within this little home.</p>
<p>The clean vertical lines in the Guest Cottage at House 8 takes the feature wall to even greater heights. <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/scyon-axon-cladding">Axon™ Cladding</a> looks like finely crafted tongue and groove boards but it’s actually a precisely engineered and manufactured fibre cement sheet.</p>

Our obsession with cladding, inside and out by Three Birds Renovations

<p>It’s fair to say we’re a little obsessed with using James Hardie’s range of cladding in our homes and not just because it looks damn hot.</p>
<p>We’re massive fans of exterior cladding on our homes but we love to use cladding to add texture and interest to otherwise plain walls internally too. We’ve used it in living rooms, bedrooms, kitchens, laundries and bathrooms and there are plenty of reasons why we’ve chosen fibre cement products by James Hardie, rather than timber or craft wood panels, for all of these applications.<img src="//images.ctfassets.net/rg5y8r6t6cjr/4iX0p3oa88DNELEOQVYa8Y/25f44dbae1d480773efd8b1753981393/Board-and-Batten-1536x1024.webp" alt="Board-and-Batten-1536x1024" /></p>
<h2 id="whywechoosejameshardiecladding">Why we choose James Hardie Cladding</h2>
<p>The thing that sets James Hardie’s range of cladding products apart from the crowd is the product composition. The products are made from fibre cement, meaning they are resistant to moisture and rot damage and won’t swell, shrink or warp like timber can, making the products suitable all different applications, including wet room applications.</p>
<p>We’ve now built two homes in bush fire zones (House 8 &amp; House 13), which required BAL rated materials to be used for the exterior. James Hardie cladding was the perfect solution, as the fibre cement composition stands up to these stringent requirements.</p>
<p>Additionally, fibre cement is durable and lightweight, meaning that our Trades love these products too because they are quick and easy to install– so that gets a big tick from us too!</p>
<h2 id="whichproductsweloveusinginternally">Which products we love using internally</h2>
<p>We’ve used both <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/scyon-axon-cladding">Axon™ Cladding</a> and <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/hardiegroove-lining">Hardie™ Groove Lining </a>to achieve the gorgeous cladded texture inside our projects and to be honest, we love them both.</p>
<p>We think <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/hardiegroove-lining">Hardie™ Groove Lining</a> is a more traditional choice of cladding which looks fabulous if you’re renovating or building a classic coastal or Hamptons style home. The 100mm width gives more lines and detail than the Axon™ Cladding 133mm profile.</p>
<p>In House 13, we chose Axon™ Cladding 133mm Smooth internally for a slightly more modern look with less groove lines. And it’s safe to say, we’re in LOVE! We love the versatility of using it on walls, ceilings and splashbacks to jzoosh up otherwise plain surfaces.</p>
<h2 id="whereweusedaxoncladdinginhouse13">Where we used Axon™ Cladding in House 13</h2>
<p>We just can’t get enough of a good thing so, once we’d decided on Axon™ Cladding, we used it anywhere and everywhere we needed some more glorious texture! Let’s take a look how we used Axon™ Cladding throughout the house…</p>
<p>Laundry – because of its water resistance, Axon™ Cladding makes a fabulous splashback. We used it in the laundry and it’s the perfect pair with the Talostone engineered stone benchtops for both good looks and durability.</p>
<p>Kitchen – we used Axon™ Cladding for another splashback, this time in the butler’s pantry.</p>
<p>Pool House bedroom – a full feature wall is always a winner so we added one to the bedroom to add character to this room.</p>
<p>Pool House living room ceiling – we wanted to make a feature of this small ceiling area and Axon™ Cladding was the icing on the cake.</p>
<p>Boys’ ensuite – for the first time we used Axon™ Cladding on bathroom walls and we’re totally digging this look! The walls are a whopping three metres high in this bathroom and Axon™ Cladding adds much needed texture to what would have otherwise been plain Jane plasterboard.</p>
<p>Upstairs Study – we used the Axon™ Cladding to line and highlight the window nooks and carried it down the half walls too. We love that Axon™ Cladding is so versatile it can be used in different spaces to create different vibes, in this case it complements the styling to up the masculine feels of the room.</p>

Three Birds Renovation House 8 – Modern Coastal Dream Home by Bonnie

<p><a href="https://www.threebirdsrenovations.com/">Three Birds Renovations</a> have built themselves a well-deserved reputation for their amazing home transformations. Their eighth renovation project was one of their biggest and most beautiful to date. The three friends – Lana, Bonnie and Erin – behind the boutique renovation company worked hard to make Bonnie’s dream family home a reality. We spoke to Bonnie to learn more about this special project.</p>
<h2 id="creatingaforeverhome">CREATING A FOREVER HOME</h2>
<p>“We bought this house five years ago, knowing that it needed a major renovation. We wanted to build our forever home – the one where we can raise our four boys and not grow out of,” explains Bonnie.</p>
<p>The sprawling five-bedroom home has a guest cottage and barn and is located on five acres with a tennis court and pool in Sydney’s Hills District. “This house is literally my dream home. I’ve been dreaming about it for over a decade and planning it for the last five years. I grew up with ‘renovating parents’, so I’ve been surrounded by reno inspo my whole life. This project really brings together all the inspiration and knowledge I’ve gained over the years.”</p>
<p>Bonnie adds it was the first project of its kind for the business as well. “Three Birds Renovations hadn’t renovated anything on this scale before either, so it was an opportunity to try lots of new things as well. The first houses we did were quick turnaround flip houses, so while we took all care we were somewhat restricted by the timeline and budget.”</p>
<h2 id="amoderncoastalbarnlook">A ‘MODERN COASTAL BARN’ LOOK</h2>
<p>Bonnie’s vision for the house was ‘<a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/looks/modern/modern-coastal">modern coastal barn</a>’. A look that was inspired by her love of the coast, childhood holidays spent by the beach, and New Zealand barn-style properties.</p>
<p>“My husband grew up on a farm in the Southern Highlands, I love the outdoors and with four boys it’s suited us to live on acreage. So, a ‘modern coastal barn’ is really the perfect combo of coast and country for us,” she explains.</p>
<p>Bonnie describes the look as a ‘modern coastal barn’ with features like a pitched roof and the classic look of <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/scyon-linea-weatherboard">Linea™ Weatherboards</a> to bring the look to life.</p>
<p>While the house is located 30km from the coast, Bonnie wanted it to have a relaxing Hamptons feel. “I wanted a home with a coastal look so that my family and I could feel like we were on holidays every day.”

<h2 id="makingthelookcometolife">MAKING THE LOOK COME TO LIFE</h2>
<p>Bonnie says the exterior of the house was “always going to be weatherboard and it was always going to be white” with clean lines and modern features, that were not too fussy. Linea™ Weatherboardhas been used on the entire exterior of the house, guest cottage and barn, which has been painted in Dulux Snowy Mountains Quarter for a classic and timeless finish.</p>
<p>“The Linea™ Weatherboard was really the crucial product in bringing the coastal and country looks together. It’s a material used in both these styles of houses, so my coastal weatherboard inspiration doesn’t look out of place in my country setting,” says Bonnie.</p>
<p>Bonnie notes that <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/hardiedeck-system">Hardie™ Deck</a> was used around the pool, the boardwalk around the side of the house and the front verandah, and HardieGroove™ in all the external eves.</p>
<p>Hardie™ Deck was the perfect product for bringing a modern coastal vibe to Bonnie’s dream home.</p>
<p>For the interior, Bonnie said she wanted high ceilings, pitched roofs, and natural wooden floors. <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/scyon-axon-cladding">“Axon™ Cladding </a>is the perfect product to create texture and interest. I’ve used it throughout the house to add gorgeous texture to walls, ceilings, and fireplaces. We actually even used it to make the barn doors.”</p>
<p>Bonnie says Axon™ Cladding was the perfect product to create texture and interest to the interior or her home.</p>
<p>“I chose these products not only for aesthetic reasons but also how they perform. I love the durability and the fact that they’re low maintenance. Fibre cement was also perfect for the BAL40 rating of my home as we’re in a bushfire prone area,” says Bonnie.</p>
<p>The modern coastal barn look was further brought to life through well-considered design details and interiors. Bonnie says skylights help flood rooms with light, and, along with white plantation shutters, can transform the feel of a space. She’s also opted for an inside/outside servery and gas strut windows, which provide a gorgeous unobstructed view outside, and a garden with a simple colour palette of greens and whites, including palm trees and frangipanis.

<h2 id="designedforeasyfamilyliving">DESIGNED FOR EASY FAMILY LIVING</h2>
<p>“I’ve finally got my weatherboard home!” says Bonnie of her dream family home. “The pavilion style layout is really typical of a farmhouse and the fact that it’s a sprawling single-level house, with a shingled roof. Also, a pool, front and centre of the house, was crucial to add a sense of coast.”</p>
<p>Bonnie’s dream home was designed with hideaway areas that allow for moments of quiet time and relaxation.</p>
<p>The house perfectly balances social and solitary spaces. Bonnie’s bedroom en-suite (which has a bath with the view of the garden), the bar, and the sun-drenched, sofa-filled adults retreat allows for moments of quiet time and relaxation.</p>
<p>The kitchen is the hub of the home, for this family that enjoys entertaining. “It’s the central point with our other entertaining spaces opening out from it. The bar and formal dining room are perfect for winter and we can’t wait for warmer weather to open all the doors out onto the pool deck with outdoor kitchen.”</p>
<p>With work taking place on the home from December 2016 to February 2018, Bonnie and her family are now enjoying their new home. “After living on site during the long build, I’m looking forward to just relaxing with my family with no dust, no dirt, no mud. I want to enjoy living a clean lifestyle, not out of boxes, and we’re really loving all the internal space. We’re not living on top of each other anymore! Once we’re settled we can’t wait to start entertaining again and be able to fit everyone in.”</p>
