Bonnie, Lana and Erin of Three Birds Renovations had a clear vision when embarking on the Three Birds Dream Home; to create a unique take on the Modern Coastal house style that people could buy and build on an average block of land. Working closely with builders, Rawson Homes, to bring their vision to life, House 14 has been meticulously designed by Three Birds Renovations to bring together all the best design features from their most loved homes, so Australian homeowners can own the very ‘best of the Birds’.

If you didn’t know that House 13 was nestled on the border of the Australian bush, you would swear that the sprawling property was a walk along a hot footpath from the beach. Achieving that Hamptons inspired coastal look – no matter the location – was all in the details for the build by Three Birds Renovations. And their latest project, featuring James Hardie’s range of versatile fibre cement products, used board and batten to create the ultimate relaxed, coastal vibes.

Villaboard Lining can be used on walls and ceilings in bathrooms, laundries, kitchens and high-traffic areas, and even in multi-residential and commercial buildings. With Three Birds’ ultimate goal being a "worry free reno or build,” having a lining that protects your foundations while still enabling aesthetic design choices by giving a solid and reliable base to work from.

To achieve the coastal fresh look we were going for, we chose Linea™ Weatherboards in the 180mm thickness. We’ve used it before so know it’s a goody and knew it would provide the Modern Coastal Look we were going for through its smooth, contemporary profile, with deep shadow lines. We’re often asked about our Three Birds Renovations signature style, and while we love any different style, it’s fair to say a Modern Coastal Look is up there with our faves. We love a fresh, coastal inspired home for its versatility and timelessness and, judging by the vision boards of our Reno School students, they do too.
A Modern Coastal Look, works just as well for a house that’s nowhere near the coast, like Bonnie’s (House 8) on acreage in a semi-rural setting or House 14, set in a suburban neighbourhood. James Hardie define the Modern Coastal look by its 6 hallmarks which will help you achieve this iconic look at your place.

Unlike cheaper, timber brands, James Hardie cladding is made from fibre cement and with that comes some huge benefits. Fibre cement won’t burn (making it suitable for kitchen splash backs), it’s water-resistant (great for bathroom walls), resistant to termites and, when installed as directed, it’s resistant to rotting and warping, which is not the case for most timber cladding products

They’re made from fibre cement, a combination of wood fibres, sand and cement which means it is super-durable and won’t warp or swell. It’s also resistant to damage from moisture and termites – all the things that make timber weatherboards look shabby overtime. They’re low maintenance and won’t need to be repainted as soon as timber boards either. James Hardie’s range of fibre cement products are also bush fire resistant so are suitable for use within fire-rated properties.

House 13 is the Australian Staycation, built during a global pandemic. Here's how they used Hardie™ range of fibre cement products to create the relaxed, coastal vibes.

The Three Birds Renovations latest project, House 13 is the ultimate Australian Staycation.

Designed and built during a global pandemic, the Three Birds explain, “never before has the term #Staycation been so relevant and the vision for our latest project was created with holidays at home in mind.”  Achieving that [Hamptons](https://www.jameshardie.com.au/hamptons-look) inspired coastal look - no matter the location - was all in the details for the build by Three Birds Renovation. And their latest project, featuring James Hardie’s range of versatile fibre cement products, used board and batten to create the ultimate relaxed, coastal vibes.

To achieve a cohesive board and batten look, the team used [Hardie™ Flex Sheets](https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/hardieflex-sheet) and [Axent™ Trim](https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/applications/trims/scyon-axent-trim) by James Hardie. Both products are made from James Hardie fibre cement, making them durable, reliable, and ready for whatever the hard Australian elements bring. 
“Using Hardie™ cladding means that you get the look and feel of timber, but with the durability of fibre cement, which means it’s resistant to rotting, warping, splintering, termites and it’s really paint friendly,” says Lana. 

The board and batten style helped Three Birds Renovations successfully pull off a coastal, relaxed design for House 13.

Three Birds replaced the old timber cladding with James Hardie Stria™ and installed it vertically rather than horizontally to help put the ‘contemporary’ into Contemporary Cottage.

Contemporary Cottage by Three Birds Renovation | James Hardie 

Situated in Windsor, a historic town north-west of Sydney, the cute cottage is home to mums, Sarah and Cath and their two sons, Chaise and Addison. Three Birds renovation wanted to give this modern family a modern update to their old home. The exterior of the house plays homage to the history of the area and the original cottage whilst making it more contemporary and creating a gorgeous, low-maintenance home for the busy modern family who live here. Three Birds replaced the old timber cladding with brand spanking new James Hardie [Stria™](https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/categories/cladding/scyon-stria-cladding) and installed it vertically rather than horizontally to help put the ‘contemporary’ into Contemporary Cottage. 
 Out the back, they chose [Axon™ Cladding](https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/categories/cladding/scyon-axon-cladding) Grained (as opposed to the smooth finish we used internally) for extra texture. Painted Dulux ‘Pozieres’, a subtle sage green, and trimmed with [Axent™ window Trims](https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/applications/trims/scyon-axent-trim) in Dulux ‘White’ Dune, the cottage has a whole new lease on life.

Bonnie's Dream Home is a sprawling five-bedroom home with guest cottage and barn. Located on five acres with a tennis court and pool in Sydney's Hills District it is acreage living inspiration like no other.

Bonnie's Dream Home is a sprawling five-bedroom home with guest cottage and barn, located on five acres with a tennis court and pool in Sydney's Hills District.  Bonnie purchased the home five years ago, knowing it needed a major renovation - the perfect opportunity to build a forever home for her family. 

The vision for the home was a modern coastal barn - the perfect combination of coast and country. Inspired by Bonnie's love of the coast, childhood holidays spent by the beach, and New Zealand barn-style properties. To achieve the modern coastal barn vision, Three Birds Renovations chose [Linea™ Weatherboard](https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/categories/cladding/scyon-linea-weatherboard) to bring the coastal and country looks together.
