Outside In: Exteriors and the Importance of First Appearances

If the home is our castle, then surely its exterior design is the crown. Not only is the exterior of the home responsible for first impressions but it provides all-important street appeal and sets the tone for the design and functionality of the rest of the house.
Neil Hipwell, Australia’s leading design builder and Founder of FutureFlip says there is a lot to consider when thinking about the design aesthetic of your home’s façade. “The façade of your home is a representation of you in your neighbourhood and the first impression for your visitors,” he explains. 
However, Neil says the exterior of your home is much more than just a pretty face – there are practical elements that the exterior needs to provide. “The exterior is also there to protect your home and your family from the elements, and to provide thermal insulation.” 
Given that the exterior of the home has such an important role to play in any renovation plan, it’s vital that your builder understands your overall design vision. 
The easiest way to convey your vision is by creating a mood board. Maria Cerne, Founder of Canberra-based design and styling practice Studio Black Interiors, says a mood board will help you collate your ideas into one cohesive look that can be shared with your builder. You can create your mood board online via a platform like <a href="https://stylesourcebook.com.au/">Style Sourcebook</a> or you can use inspiration from magazines and catalogues.
Maria’s top tips for creating a façade mood board are:
<h3 id="thinkaboutyourexteriorstyle">Think about your exterior style</h3>
How do you want your house to feel – do you picture it making a strong visual statement or blending into the neighbourhood? Should it be modern coastal, box modern, Hamptons-inspired or even ScandiBarn?
<h3 id="consideryourhomeslocation">Consider your homes location</h3>
Are you in the city, the suburbs, a rural or coastal setting? These different environments can inspire your colour and finish choices.
<h3 id="pickyourtrio">Pick your trio</h3>
This is a good rule of thumb to keep in mind of terms of finishes. The idea is to have a trio of main finishes or colours. This may be mix of feature wall cladding styles like James Hardie Linea™ Weatherboard, Axon and Hardie™ Fine Texture Cladding. Base colours should be used on the largest areas of your exteriors such as the walls, roof and the garage door, while accent colours are used on smaller areas such as windows, trims and your front door. 
<h3 id="editandrefine">Edit and refine</h3>
Maria says, “Look at what is working and what isn’t, and make changes to the mood board until it feels cohesive Try not to use too many colours and finishes on your exterior – less is generally more.”
Now that your vision is clear and your builder knows exactly what look you’re trying to achieve, it’s time to consider the finer details of your façade.
Neil Hipwell, has designed and built more than 100 homes over his 13-year career and has the following advice to ensure your exterior design mirrors the time, energy and effort you’ve placed into your interior renovation:
<h3 id="itsallinthesymmetry">It’s all in the symmetry</h3>
“When it comes to designing a great façade, it’s important to get the symmetry right. Either use a completely symmetrical design or play with the proportions just make sure to keep the overall look balanced,” says Neil.

“Less design is good design, we recommend avoiding things like patterns, bold colours and harsh shapes. Instead, create a modern façade by choosing to create a sense of texture through your material choices,” he explains.

“When choosing your exterior materials go for something with long-term benefits. We like the range of cladding by James Hardie as not only is it bush-fire and termite-safe, the fibre-cement formulation is created to withstand Australian conditions and won’t warp, twist or rot.”

“If you are going for cladding, think about whether you after a vertical or horizontal design. James Hardie has a wide range of products that can give the look of timber or render, so the design possibilities are endless,” says Neil.
“Cladding is a great choice as it’s quick and easy to install, and it lends itself to different types of design features that can be more difficult to achieve when working with brick.”

“Think about the finishing touches to your exterior design like windows, window trims, door hardware, lighting, outdoor flooring like tiles and even your letterbox and house numbers. Also, well considered landscaping will make a huge difference to your façade,” he said.

The Fast and The Fabulous: Two Houses in Twelve Weeks

<h2 id="themodernlook">THE MODERN LOOK</h2>
Building a forever home requires a lot of thought and preparation. Now, imagine the planning and preparation required if you were building your forever home in just 12 weeks! That’s exactly what Catherine Heraghty, interior designer and owner/creative director of <a href="http://www.thestablesco.com.au/">The Stables</a>, and her family did when they decided to knock down their existing home and build a new two-house duplex (one of which would become an investment property) in its place. Here, she shares the story behind her new home.
<h2 id="aknockdownrebuild">A KNOCKDOWN-REBUILD</h2>
“We lived in a seventy-year-old two-bedroom home and wanted to expand our family,” says Heraghty of her motivation to rebuild their family home in the Sydney suburb of Caringbah.
“We knew it would be very difficult to renovate a house like ours, so the decision was made to develop the block we lived on with our builder <a href="https://futureflip.com.au/">Futureflip</a>. We would gain the extra bedroom we needed, upgrade our home and space for about the same price as a renovation once we sold the investment property next door.”
Work began in February of this year and ended in May. During which, the existing house was knocked down and two houses built on the 500m2 block. Each has two levels, three bedrooms, two bathrooms and an outdoor entertaining area.

<h2 id="themoderncoastallook">THE MODERN COASTAL LOOK</h2>
Heraghty says they wanted their new home’s exterior to stand out and be a cross between coastal and modern. “We wanted something striking! We live in an area where there are a handful of duplexes in every street. There is so much development and we felt that there was a lot of the same architecture being put up, so it was very important that ours stood out amongst the crowd.”
They also wanted the extra space for the interior, while ensuring it remained consistent with the exterior of the houses. “As an interior designer, it was really important to me that the look flowed from the outside through to the inside.”

<h2 id="choosingcontemporarymaterials">CHOOSING CONTEMPORARY MATERIALS</h2>
James Hardie products were central to creating Heraghty’s desired look with both houses being clad entirely in the exterior cladding range from James Hardie. “We used <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/scyon-axon-cladding">Axon™ Cladding</a> around the bottom floor of the house to create a very sleek and contemporary feel. We used Linea™ Weatherboard upstairs to give the build a coastal weatherboard feel and we chose to paint the Linea™ Weatherboard in white for a more classic look. Together, the <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/scyon-axon-cladding">Axon™ Cladding</a> and the <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/scyon-linea-weatherboard">Linea™ Weatherboard</a> sit really well! I love that the exterior of our home has a nice balance of contemporary and coastal.”
Describing her personal style as “quite welcoming”, Heraghty says while the exterior of the duplexes are quite modern and sleek she was able to make them feel warmer with the use of <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/scyon-stria-cladding">Stria™ Cladding</a> around for the houses’ party walls and Linea™ Weatherboard on the top level.

 “Having the look of the <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/scyon-linea-weatherboard">Linea™ Weatherboard</a> really gave the exterior some much-needed texture and really softened the look. It was so important to me that the home did not feel too cold seeing as we were using a lot of darker colours! Internally, the architecture was quite minimal but again I was able to soften this up with the use of warmer colour palettes and textured finishes making the home feel friendly and inviting.”

Heraghty says the three biggest lessons she learnt from the project were the importance of creating a concept and sticking to it, aligning yourself with experts in the field, and working with a great builder.

 “Having a builder that is passionate about their work and willing to try new things and step outside the square is a must. Neil Hipwell from Futureflip was amazing every step along the way. He was always coming up with solutions and was excited to try new things!”

The integrity of the materials was also of high importance. “Aesthetically we felt that the exterior cladding range from James Hardie were far superior products – there are some beautiful profiles to choose from and we managed to get them all on our house! The fact that the cladding is made from fibre cement sheeting means that its durability cannot be beaten, we know it’s going to stand the test of time!”
<h2 id="afamilyforeverhome">A FAMILY FOREVER HOME</h2>
With the project now complete and the family settled into their new home, Heraghty says they are really looking forward to spending their first summer in it.

 “We have lots of beautiful large windows, which we have not been able to really use yet! I can’t wait to have the large sliding doors open on hot summer nights while we watch TV. That is going to be such a luxury. I am also really looking forward to having lunches out on the deck in summer, as we never had an outdoor area, the best we could do was throw a picnic blanket down so enjoying the outside in a real entertaining area is going to be a real luxury for us!”

The Jacaranda duplex – mixed cladding materials make a personalised home

Brolga Box Modern meets Palm Springs – the completed project

<a href="https://\jameshardie.com.au/blog/brolga-installation-featuring-linea-weatherboards/">Previously we shared with you the installation process</a> for this ‘<a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/looks/modern/box-modern">Box Modern</a> meets Palm Springs’ home from Futureflip.
The Brolga project is now finished and we are excited to share with you the end result.

Clean modern looks are in high demand because they have a fresh feel and won’t date easily – this is definitely the case for the Brolga project by Futureflip. By using <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/scyon-linea-weatherboard">Linea™ Weatherboards 180mm</a> in a fresh, white colour palette, Futureflip have created this stunning modern home with clean, sleek lines that epitomise modern architecture.
They have also cleverly incorporated different box forms with no visible roofline and arranged them in an interesting way. By using a variety of stacked boxes and elevated forms the second dwelling within the home has been cleverly hidden – can you spot it?

Durability was a non-negotiable for Futureflip when selecting products for this home given it’s close proximity to the beach (200 metres). This made the decision to use James Hardie <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/scyon-linea-weatherboard">Linea™ Weatherboard 180mm</a> incredibly easy. Made from fibre cement, Linea is extremely durable and resistant to damage from shrinking, swelling and cracking.
