In creating a dream home for owners Gary and Sue Kemp in Kelmscott WA, Adam Butcher of Darklight Designs had his work cut out for him. Not only was the build on a steep slope, the whole house had to be BAL-40 compliant.

For the expansive deck included in the plans, using timber was out of the question. In his search for a suitable fire-rated product for this key feature, Adam found the perfect match in Hardie™ Deck – a durable, versatile fibre-cement board with a contemporary look.

As the main hub for entertaining and relaxing, the outdoor room for the home demanded a material that would deliver design appeal too.

“With Hardie™ Deck owners can coat it in different colours to suit,” Adam says. “It ticks all the right boxes, for creating a modern finish with the bushfire rating this location demands.”

As Gary and Sue planned to spend plenty of time enjoying their stylish outdoor space, it was important to keep it in top-notch condition. “With the standard deck set-up, you’ll have two boards with a gap that collects dirt and swells, making maintenance and cleaning an issue,” says Adam.

“With Hardie™ Deck there are no gaps, because all the boards have an 11-millimetre gap where clip-on slats fit between them. The smooth finish makes it easy to sweep off or mop clean,” Adam notes.
