A Self-Designed Scandi Barn Masterpiece

<p>A love of architecture and design inspired Naomi and husband Nick to build their dream home for their three teenage children, and extended family menagerie that includes dog Daisy, four chooks, and one hermit crab.</p>

<p>“We decided to build as we have always wanted to design our own home from scratch, we love architecture, interior design, and landscape design,” said Naomi. “We wanted to achieve a light-filled, low-maintenance home through a design that will suit us when the kids get older and move out, but still spacious enough to have them and their friends around.”</p>
<p>Naomi and Nick were inspired by their love of Scandinavian Barn design with a hint of Japanese design including light, white spaces, and lots of glass with strong architectural lines, that lend themselves perfectly to lightweight construction. <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/modern-homes-forecast/barn">Barn style</a> is characterised by the minimalist philosophy that encourages simplicity and creating a strong relationship between the design elements and nature. Barn style homes are loved for their vaulted ceilings, open plan living spaces and bold street presence.</p>

<h2 id="discoveringhardieexteriorcladding">Discovering Hardie™ Exterior Cladding</h2>
<p>Naomi had no previous knowledge of exterior cladding types, but with this impending project, she learnt about <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/categories/cladding">Hardie™ products</a> through seeing them used on projects featured on Instagram and Facebook, and handling the products at Bunnings. “When designing our home, we used a mood board with images of Hardie™ products along with colour samples and inspirational images from Pinterest,” said Naomi.</p>
<p>With the timber look playing a major role in this style of design, Naomi’s project features <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/scyon-axon-cladding">Axon™ Cladding</a> on the majority of the exterior of the house, as well as one internal feature wall in their lounge room. <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/hardiedeck-system">Hardie™ Deck</a> has been used for all of the home’s external decking areas and stairs. <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/scyon-axon-cladding">Axon™ Cladding</a> and <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/hardiedeck-system">HardieDeck™</a> were decided on as they helped Naomi and Nick achieve the modern uniform clean look they were after. Both products provide high durability and are low maintenance, which was one of the main objectives with the build.  </p>

<h2 id="designbuildenjoy">Design, Build, Enjoy</h2>
<p>Naomi and Nick worked on the house design, interior design, and landscaping design as they had a clear vision of what they wanted for the end result, and a draftsperson formalised their final design before submission. Naomi pursued the Barn look but also wanted to include muted colours that throw shadows from the landscape and sun at different times of the day. </p>
<p>“We love modern but also want it homely and a place of relaxation and peace,” said Naomi. “I felt like it was crucial to have cohesive interior and exterior design, the two of these designs needed to marry to get an end result that is not only practical but aesthetically pleasing.”</p>

<p>Local builders, DKM Builders, worked on the project along with Evergreen Garden &amp; Landscape Solutions, to bring their design to life. “Duncan and his team from DKM Builders were brilliant to work with, the boys took the time to understand our design and project and were very particular with a perfect finish and making sure the finer details were spot on.”</p>
<p>The build took around nine months, mostly involving local trades which gave everyone a sense of pride in what they have created within the community. “The communication between the trades and ourselves was really great and that’s what makes a build enjoyable and a lot less stressful.”</p>
<p>“We love the clean lines of the <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/categories/cladding">Hardie™ products</a>. Their durability and the fact that they can handle dark colours means the house will look great for years to come,” said Naomi, who absolutely loves the final result and how the home looks. “It’s practical yet beautiful and homely, an amazing space to spend family time together and the next stages of our lives.” </p>
<p>For those wanting to build or renovate, Naomi suggests doing plenty of research and discovering what amazing products are available. With so many options, choosing the materials which will be sure to get the style and look you are after is a challenging but rewarding task.</p>

Case study: Crafting Glenn Buchanan’s outdoor room renovation!

<p>Renovating a home’s interior is a challenging yet common project that thousands of Aussies tackle every year. Taking on an outdoor space is another kettle of fish, with considerations like pools, decking and privacy at the heart of key decisions.</p>
<p>We sat down with Glenn Buchanan and builder Rod Jones to discuss Glenn’s ideas for a <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/looks/modern">modern-look outdoor reno </a>and how James Hardie products elevated the entire project.</p>
<h2 id="craftingglennsrenovision">CRAFTING GLENN’S RENO-VISION</h2>
<p>When his family made the decision to put in a pool, Glenn knew he had to reinvigorate his home’s entire outdoor area along with it.</p>
<p>“I have young children who need to be supervised in the pool and I wanted an additional decking and seating area with a privacy screen – one that was comfortable but also looks great,” he says. “We also love to entertain and wanted different ‘zones’ in the backyard to achieve different objectives: eating, cooking, seating, relaxing.” </p>
<p>But Glenn also wanted to ensure any renovation aligned with the current style of his home. “We really wanted the space to match the modern architectural style of our home, in neutral tones that wouldn’t date. We also knew that the materials we selected for the decking and screening had to be hard-wearing and durable, as they are close to our pool.”

<p>The 2019–20 holiday season has been the Buchanan family’s first chance to properly enjoy their newly renovated outdoor space – and Glenn says they couldn’t be happier.</p>
<p>“This is the first summer we have been able to really use the space since the pool was finished and we are really happy with the finished result,” he says. “The modern decking can adapt to multiple looks, making it very easy for us to change our style as we adapt to the seasons. A combination of open communication with Rod and a clear plan and budget from the start were key.”</p>
<p>Glenn also says the outdoor space has positively impacted the rest of his family’s home, with the long-term benefit of added value always in the back of his mind.</p>
<p>“It really feels like our house just got a whole lot bigger. Our new outdoor room is such a practical, usable space. I can watch the kids while they play and swim, and also know that the additional living spaces will add a lot more value to our property when we decide to sell.

Three Birds Renovations’ top 5 tips for the perfect outdoor entertaining space this summer

<p>Summer is just around the corner and we’re so excited that the homeowners of <a href="https://www.threebirdsrenovations.com/house12">House 12</a> are back in their newly renovated home and ready to enjoy it.</p>
<p>When creating an outdoor entertaining space for a home, we like to start by dividing the entire available space into different zones, with each zone having a distinct reason for being.</p>
<p>It’s a great way to make the best use of all areas of your backyard. Here’s how we did it at House 12:</p>
<h2 id="outdoorbar">Outdoor bar</h2>
<p>Move over humble backyard shed, welcome outdoor bar! It’s the new must-have item popping up in backyards this summer. With the COVID-led trend of entertaining at home, we wanted to put the under-utilised shed to good use so turned it into a bar (leaving room out the back for storage) to extend the outdoor entertaining space.</p>
<p>Despite being an old shed in its previous life, this beautiful little bar shows no remnants of that now. She’s dressed up to the nines with a built-in bar, wine fridge, plenty of tiled goodness and gorgeous <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/scyon-axon-cladding">Axon™ Cladding</a> walls to boot (both inside and out!) . We love how easy it is to reclad over something like a garden shed. Just remove the old timber cladding and nail Axon in its place.</p>
<h2 id="bbq">BBQ</h2>
<p>It wouldn’t be an Aussie backyard without a BBQ so, we built our own BBQ area using breeze blocks as a feature for a resort-like vibe. We used <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/scyon-axon-cladding">Axon™ Cladding</a> for the splashback behind the BBQ. James Hardie’s fibre cement is deemed non-combustible and is regularly used in bushfire zones and in fire resistant walls, making it the perfect material for this outdoor splashback.</p>
<p>To create the built-in BBQ we use James Hardie<a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/villaboard-lining">Villaboard™ Lining</a> and <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/hardiepanel-compressed-sheet">Hardie™ Panel Compressed Sheet </a> (an extra dense sheet typically used for bathroom flooring but it can also be used for hacks like bench seating when timber won’t be durable enough. And of course the breeze blocks and a tiled benchtop to finish off the area.</p>
<h2 id="servery">Servery</h2>
<p>The servery is always an important feature in our homes, so much so that it deserves its own point!</p>
<p>Whether you prefer a gas strut or bi-fold windows, the sheer motion of flinging open the servery window/s immediate lets a breath of fresh air into your kitchen and extends it to the outdoor space. It creates an additional bar area for guests or family to perch, chat and drink or sit and enjoy a casual meal.</p>
<h2 id="diningroom">Dining room</h2>
<p>Defined by the <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/hardiedeck-system">Hardie™ Deck</a> underfoot, the dining area is covered by a pergola so if it starts to rain while you’re entertaining you can still dine alfresco.</p>
<p>We chose bench seating to fit as many people as possible around the table and they tuck underneath when not in use to save space.</p>
<h2 id="seatinggalore">Seating galore</h2>
<p>We created an alfresco lounge area by framing the zone with more gorgeous breeze blocks and joined the walls with a beach seat (our fave form of furniture for getting lots of bums on seats). This fabulous bench seat was made with a range of James Hardie fibre cement sheets – <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/villaboard-lining">Villaboard™ Lining</a> and <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/hardiepanel-compressed-sheet">Hardie™ Panel Compressed Sheet </a> and rendered to complete the look.</p>
<p>Then we added plenty more seating options and a central coffee table for grazing plates and drinks.</p>
<p>A hanging chair has become one of our favourite items in our homes and we couldn’t resist hanging one off the BBQ area pergola her too. It’s so relaxing while still in the middle of the action, we think the adults and kids alike will be fighting for this prime seating option!</p>
