<p>Bonnie, Lana and Erin of <a href="https://www.threebirdsrenovations.com/">Three Birds Renovations</a> had a clear vision when embarking on the Three Birds Dream Home; to create a unique take on the <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/looks/modern/modern-coastal">Modern Coastal</a> house style that people could buy and build on an average block of land. </p>
<p>Working closely with builders, <a href="https://www.rawsonhomes.com.au/">Rawson Homes</a>, to bring their vision to life, <a href="https://www.threebirdsrenovations.com/house14">House 14</a> has been meticulously designed by <a href="https://www.threebirdsrenovations.com/">Three Birds Renovations</a> to bring together all the best design features from their most loved homes, so Australian homeowners can own the very ‘best of the Birds’.</p>
<p>Each design element, building material, fixture and fitting has been hand-picked by <a href="https://www.threebirdsrenovations.com/">Three Birds Renovations</a> with the aim of creating the epitome of ‘Coastal Cool’. From the second you lay eyes on the Three Birds Dream Home, it’s clear that the team nailed the brief.</p>

<p>The stunning front facade is instant street appeal with its striking textured weatherboard exterior. Bonnie, Creative Director of <a href="https://www.threebirdsrenovations.com/">Three Birds Renovations </a>explains, “When it comes to your home’s exterior, you want to get it right. It’s the first thing you see when you pull up in the car, so you want to make sure it puts a smile on your dial. The street appeal of your home will have a big impact, good or bad, on its market value. You know what they say, first impressions last.”</p>
<p>To achieve a fresh <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/looks/modern/modern-coastal">Modern Coastal look</a>, Three Birds chose Linea™ Weatherboards by James Hardie in the wider 180mm width. Very familiar with the cladding products from James Hardie, Bonnie praised “its smooth, contemporary profile, with deep shadow lines” and the product credentials as the main drawcards. The look is also reminiscent of the summer holiday beach houses Australians are fond of.</p>
<p>“When we’re making design choices for the exterior of our homes, it’s all about how we want the home to look, so we turn to our vision board. It was imperative that we chose an exterior finish that gave the home the character to fit in with a street full of original cottages and bungalows. Using <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/scyon-linea-weatherboard">Linea™ Weatherboard</a> by James Hardie was a no-brainer.”</p>
<p>“Linea™ Weatherboard is made from <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/fibre-cement">Hardie™ fibre cement</a>, a combination of wood fibres, sand and cement which means it is super durable and won’t warp or swell. It’s also resistant to damage from moisture and termites - all the things that make timber weatherboards require ongoing attention. Fibre cement is low maintenance and won’t need to be repainted as frequently as timber boards either.”</p>
<p>Sitting front and centre of the block, the home captures the brightness of the location while creating interest with a slowly shifting play of light created by <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/scyon-linea-weatherboard">Linea™ Weatherboards</a>, which are used around the full facade of the home.</p>

With brick you’ll lose up to 14cm of internal floor space, right around the perimeter of the house, as brick is a much thicker substrate than cladding. If you’re building a Three Birds Dream Home on a smaller block size, you’ll be thrilled we chose <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/scyon-linea-weatherboard">Linea™ Weatherboards</a> instead of bricks because it’s gained internal floor space, giving the homeowners more bang for their buck in their living spaces.”</p>

<p>For Three Birds Renovations, each new project is a chance to create the perfect home - from the inside out. The team have been&nbsp;renovating,  building&nbsp;from scratch and flipped homes together since 2014, and have since branched out to passing on their hard-earned knowledge through their online learning platform, The Reno School. Years of experience means that they have wheelbarrow loads of wisdom to share, especially how to take control of your project by choosing the right products including the right lining for your build.&nbsp;</p>
<p>The hallmarks of Three Birds design and builds are spacious homes with that focus on the finer details: spectacularly coloured tiles, luxe fittings and hand-picked artwork. While the exteriors are an aesthetically-pleasing focal point, the team also emphasise the importance of knowing what is going on behind the walls.&nbsp;</p>
<p>And for Three Birds, <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/villaboard-lining">Villaboard Lining™</a> by James Hardie set the standard for linings so you can have a “worry free” reno or build. “We have used Villaboard Lining for many years,” says Erin, one of the&nbsp;trio&nbsp;behind Three Birds Renovations, whose latest project, House 13, used the durable and resilient material in the wet areas across the house and luxurious cabana. <p>Villaboard Lining is inherently moisture resistant due to the way it is made and won’t rot. “If the worst was to happen in your wet space, and your waterproofing fails,” says Erin, “rest assured: with this Villaboard product installed, you’re in safe hands.” This means that it won’t deform or lose its structural integrity, so you don’t have to plan for rectifications down the line, which take up precious time and can eat into your budget.&nbsp;</p>
<h2 id="strengthbehindthescenesnbsp">Strength behind the scenes &nbsp;</h2>
<p>Villaboard Lining is thick and sturdy, and unlike plasterboard, it doesn’t need a coating. That strength and protection means it has another feature that outdoes standard plasterboard: it has incredible hanging power. The reliability of Villaboard Lining means that you can add tiles, hooks and fixings to your walls, safe in the knowledge that the tensile bond strength is up to 75% greater than wet area plasterboard. &nbsp;</p>

<p>Villaboard Lining is not only functional - it enables unique design ideas that can be applied to wet areas for maximum wow factor. Due to the flexibility of the material, it can be used in curved spaces, such as showers, making it an aesthetic and practical choice for design as well. The Three Birds team used the&nbsp;Villavboard&nbsp;to great effect in the&nbsp;Moroccan-inspired&nbsp;shower recess of House 13, which curves around a central gold shower fitting. The curve allows for a better use of space, and they could rest easy knowing that the structural integrity of the shower is preserved. &nbsp;</p>

Three Birds Renovations House 11: Colour Me Hamptons

<p>Three Birds Renovations, the unrivalled queens of home transformations, headed to Glenhaven in suburban Sydney for their latest renovation project, <a href="https://www.threebirdsrenovations.com/house11">House #11</a>.  Read on to learn how the talented trio turned this unassuming family home into a stunning coastal Hamptons-inspired haven.</p>
<h2 id="totalcreatvecontrol">TOTAL CREATVE CONTROL</h2>
<p>In a Three Birds Renovations first, the owners of this family home gave their house keys to Bonnie, Lana and Erin, packed up and left them to work their magic.</p>
<p>“This reno was like none other we’d done before! We asked our brave homeowners to handover their keys, their budget and full creative control… to us! They had no say… #zip #zilch #zero,” explains Bonnie.</p>
<p>“We sent them on their merry way and jumped into action to create the family home they’ve always dreamed of… or so we hoped!”</p>
<p>The only guidance the owners provided was what their budget was, what number of bedrooms and bathrooms they needed and what they just couldn’t do without.</p>
<h2 id="somethingnewandfresh">SOMETHING NEW AND FRESH!</h2>
<p>“Our vision was to create a Hamptons-inspired home with pops of colour throughout,” says Lana noting that the existing style of the house really lent itself to this vision.</p>
<p>Externally, Three Birds Renovations wanted to give the dated brickwork a fresh Hamptons vibe with sprayed brick, cladding and new detailing. As well as giving the family some additional privacy by adding a front fence to the property, which is located on a main road, and upgrading the existing swimming pool in the back.</p>
<p>“We were very lucky with this large, flat block with easy access,” notes Lana. “The only challenge was because of the large size of the backyard we needed to create multiple entertaining zones, within the budget.”</p>
<p>Internally, they wanted to bring light and space into the house, which was dark with black tiles, exposed brick and wooden features.</p>
<p>“To create our Hamptons vision we knew we’d need a lot of white paint, with some coloured features and cladding details.”</p>

CREATING A COASTAL HAMPTONS HOME
Three Birds Renovations gave the home a Hamptons-inspired look but with a twist.</p>
<p>“We’re calling it #ColourMeHamptons because it’s inspired by <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/looks/hamptons/traditional-hamptons">traditional Hamptons homes</a> but we’ve added pops of colour to make it more playful and youthful for this family,” says Erin.</p>
<p>Lots of whites and greys, cladding, texture and layers were central to creating the look.</p>
<p>“Cladding was an important part of our vision and so we used <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/scyon-stria-cladding">Stria™</a> Cladding from <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/scyon-axent-trim">James Hardie’s Scyon</a> range to add the cladding detail to the top storey of the house, externally. We also used James Hardie Axent™ Trim to add trims to the existing windows to make them pop,” explains Erin.</p>
<p>Erin says the combination of the Stria cladding and brickwork – all painted the same Dulux Grey Pail – is one of her favourite elements of the renovation.</p>
<p>“It’s the perfect Hamptons grey and contrasted with the Dulux White on White trims, it sets the tone for the entire house.”</p>
<p>“The traditional profile choice would have been <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/scyon-linea-weatherboard">Linea™ Weatherboard</a> but we wanted this home to be a bit different and Stria’s wide boards and groove detail is a fresh approach to the <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/hamptons-look">Hamptons look</a> we were going for.”</p>
<p>In the backyard, Three Birds Renovations created a gorgeous, covered entertaining patio that opens with sliding doors from the family lounge room.</p>
<p>“We revamped the pool area and added a poolside pergola to relax after your dip. Down the back of the property, there’s yet another seating area around a fire pit.”</p>
<p>Inside, the team used <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/hardiegroove-lining">James Hardie HardieGroove™</a> Lining throughout the home to add texture and create a coastal Hamptons vibe.</p>
<p>“The HardieGroove cladding makes plain white walls look amazing and is perfect for adding little details that make all the difference in a renovation – like how we used it along the bench seat in the dining nook.”</p>
<p>Finally, they added some pops of colour and playful touches to complete the look. “We tiled the concrete porch with gorgeous encaustic-look tiles, added some big pots with plants and a fun Byron Bay hanging chair to help achieve this.”

<h2 id="bringingitalltogether">BRINGING IT ALL TOGETHER</h2>
<p>For this renovation, like the ten before it, Three Birds Renovations created a vision board for the project, finding inspiration from the likes of Instagram, Pinterest, magazines, holidays and hotels.</p>
<p>“We whittle it down to a few images, add some words to cement our vision and this becomes our bible for the renovation. We share it with all our tradies to make sure we’re all on the same page for the entire journey,” says Bonnie.</p>
<p>In working with the builder and tradies, Bonnie, Lana and Erin specify the details of every tap, floorboard, and paint colour “so there’s no room for anyone to stray from our carefully selected choices” and are on-site regularly to ensure it all goes as planned.</p>
<p>Three Birds Renovations have created a lush coastal Hamptons haven for this family that is both beautiful and functional.</p>
<p>“We wanted to create them a home we thought they’d love, so we got to know how they live and designed the house with that in mind,” says Bonnie.</p>
<p>“We think it’s really important to think about how you want to feel in your home as well as how it looks. So we kept that in mind with every decision too – it needed to be practical for how they like to live, as well as pretty.”</p>

Three Birds Renovations’ top 5 tips for the perfect outdoor entertaining space this summer

<p>Summer is just around the corner and we’re so excited that the homeowners of <a href="https://www.threebirdsrenovations.com/house12">House 12</a> are back in their newly renovated home and ready to enjoy it.</p>
<p>When creating an outdoor entertaining space for a home, we like to start by dividing the entire available space into different zones, with each zone having a distinct reason for being.</p>
<p>It’s a great way to make the best use of all areas of your backyard. Here’s how we did it at House 12:</p>
<h2 id="outdoorbar">Outdoor bar</h2>
<p>Move over humble backyard shed, welcome outdoor bar! It’s the new must-have item popping up in backyards this summer. With the COVID-led trend of entertaining at home, we wanted to put the under-utilised shed to good use so turned it into a bar (leaving room out the back for storage) to extend the outdoor entertaining space.</p>
<p>Despite being an old shed in its previous life, this beautiful little bar shows no remnants of that now. She’s dressed up to the nines with a built-in bar, wine fridge, plenty of tiled goodness and gorgeous <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/scyon-axon-cladding">Axon™ Cladding</a> walls to boot (both inside and out!) . We love how easy it is to reclad over something like a garden shed. Just remove the old timber cladding and nail Axon in its place.</p>
<h2 id="bbq">BBQ</h2>
<p>It wouldn’t be an Aussie backyard without a BBQ so, we built our own BBQ area using breeze blocks as a feature for a resort-like vibe. We used <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/scyon-axon-cladding">Axon™ Cladding</a> for the splashback behind the BBQ. James Hardie’s fibre cement is deemed non-combustible and is regularly used in bushfire zones and in fire resistant walls, making it the perfect material for this outdoor splashback.</p>
<p>To create the built-in BBQ we use James Hardie<a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/villaboard-lining">Villaboard™ Lining</a> and <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/hardiepanel-compressed-sheet">Hardie™ Panel Compressed Sheet </a> (an extra dense sheet typically used for bathroom flooring but it can also be used for hacks like bench seating when timber won’t be durable enough. And of course the breeze blocks and a tiled benchtop to finish off the area.</p>
<h2 id="servery">Servery</h2>
<p>The servery is always an important feature in our homes, so much so that it deserves its own point!</p>
<p>Whether you prefer a gas strut or bi-fold windows, the sheer motion of flinging open the servery window/s immediate lets a breath of fresh air into your kitchen and extends it to the outdoor space. It creates an additional bar area for guests or family to perch, chat and drink or sit and enjoy a casual meal.</p>
<h2 id="diningroom">Dining room</h2>
<p>Defined by the <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/hardiedeck-system">Hardie™ Deck</a> underfoot, the dining area is covered by a pergola so if it starts to rain while you’re entertaining you can still dine alfresco.</p>
<p>We chose bench seating to fit as many people as possible around the table and they tuck underneath when not in use to save space.</p>
<h2 id="seatinggalore">Seating galore</h2>
<p>We created an alfresco lounge area by framing the zone with more gorgeous breeze blocks and joined the walls with a beach seat (our fave form of furniture for getting lots of bums on seats). This fabulous bench seat was made with a range of James Hardie fibre cement sheets – <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/villaboard-lining">Villaboard™ Lining</a> and <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/hardiepanel-compressed-sheet">Hardie™ Panel Compressed Sheet </a> and rendered to complete the look.</p>
<p>Then we added plenty more seating options and a central coffee table for grazing plates and drinks.</p>
<p>A hanging chair has become one of our favourite items in our homes and we couldn’t resist hanging one off the BBQ area pergola her too. It’s so relaxing while still in the middle of the action, we think the adults and kids alike will be fighting for this prime seating option!</p>

Our Contemporary Cottage Transformation By Three Birds Renovations

<p>Situated in Windsor, a historic town north-west of Sydney, <a href="https://www.threebirdsrenovations.com/house12">House 12</a> is a cute little cottage that was ripe for a contemporary update.</p>
<p>Our vision for the home was a #contemporarycottage which, for us, meant lots of warmth, natural tones and textures, coupled with practical features like plenty of storage, which every family needs.</p>
<p>We’re huge fans of James Hardie’s diverse range of fibre cement cladding products because we love that it can be used to give the look of timber or the look of render, depending on your vision.</p>
<p>At <a href="https://www.threebirdsrenovations.com/house12">House 12</a>, lots of cladding, inside and out, was part of our vision to bringlayers and texture to each space, coupled with a dreamy colour palette.</p>

<h2 id="exterior">Exterior</h2>
<p>For the exterior of the house, we wanted to pay homage to the history of the area and the original cottage whilst making it more contemporary and creating a gorgeous, low-maintenance home for the busy modern family who live here.</p>
<p>We replaced the old timber cladding with brand spanking new James Hardie Stria™ and installed it vertically rather than horizontally to help put the ‘contemporary’ in to Contemporary Cottage. We chose the wider 255mm <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/scyon-stria-cladding">Stria™ Cladding</a> board width which also helps to create the contemporary look and throws deeper shadow lines for added detail.</p>
<p>Unlike timber, which can warp and have split paint over time, fibre cement lasts longer and the paint will stay looking fresher for many years to come too.</p>
<p>Out the back, we used Axon™ Cladding, another fibre cement product that comes in panels (rather than individual shiplap boards, like <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/scyon-stria-cladding">Stria™ Cladding</a>) and gives the look of perfectly crafted vertical joint timber. We chose <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/scyon-axon-cladding">Axon™ Cladding</a> Grained (as opposed to the smooth finish we used internally) for extra texture.</p>
<p>Painted Dulux ‘Pozieres’, a subtle sage green, ­and trimmed with Axent window trims in Dulux ‘White’ Dune, the cottage has a whole new lease on life.</p>
<h2 id="interiortouches">Interior touches</h2>
<p>Fibre cement is ideal for areas like kitchens and laundries because it resists moisture and doesn’t rot like timber does. Gotta love a product that practical as well as pretty!</p>
<p>We just can’t get enough of <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/scyon-axon-cladding">Axon™ Cladding</a> and find a place to use it in all of our homes. In the kitchen at House 12, we lined the walls with <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/scyon-axon-cladding">Axon™ Cladding</a> Smooth to create interest and texture and replicated this on the interior walls of the shed-cum-bar, all painted Dulux ‘Clay Pipe’ for dreamy, luxe vibes.</p>
<p>For added wow factor we carried the Axon™ Cladding Smooth panels along the bench seating throughout the home as well. Did we mention we can’t get enough of this product?!</p>
<h2 id="decking">Decking</h2>
<p>HardieDeck has been a mainstay in many of our renovations for many years now and we’ve used it again at House 12 for the alfresco dining space. We love that it’s low maintenance, won’t splinter little feet and looks fabulous too!</p>
<p>Sealed in a gorgeous warm sandy colour it creates a clean look to connect indoors and outdoors, without risking damage from the elements. Smooth, wide boards with clean lines and new finishing boards (to create a bordered edge – a first for us!) complete the look.</p>
<p>The combination of James Hardie cladding and colour throughout the home helped create the Contemporary Cottage of our homeowners’ dreams.</p>

Three Birds House 10 – Modern Mediterranean Villa with creative home office space

<p>The dream team at <a href="https://www.threebirdsrenovations.com">Three Birds Renovations</a> are masters of home transformations, but this project is a little different than what they’re used to. For starters, the homeowner is none other than their digital designer, Sophie Bell of Peppa Hart, and for the first time in the history of Three Birds Renovations, their collaboration with Sophie and husband Michael is a new home build.</p>
<p>We chatted with the team at Three Birds Renovations about their exciting <a href="https://www.threebirdsrenovations.com/house10">House 10</a> project.</p>
<h2 id="thehinterlandhideaway">THE HINTERLAND HIDEAWAY</h2>
<p>After travelling extensively throughout Southern Europe, Sophie and Michael always knew that their dream house had to be a modern Mediterranean masterpiece. For the young couple and their two children, two-year-old Hendrix and newborn Peppa, this dream came true when they bought acreage in the NSW Hinterland and partnered with Three Birds Renovations.

As a digital designer, Sophie already had a keen eye for style and aesthetics and plenty of inspirational photographs, sketches and mementos from family holidays in Greece and Italy. After only spending an hour looking at the vacant acreage in the lush NSW Hinterland, Sophie and Michael knew that this was the perfect site to build their Mediterranean masterpiece. And of course, partnering with three creative and talented home renovators Sophie had worked with for years was a no-brainer.</p>
<h2 id="thevisionboard">THE VISION BOARD</h2>
<p>“Sophie had SO much inspo she’d collected from holiday pics, hotels and magazines to create her vision board for this #mediterraneanfarmhouse,”  <a href="https://www.threebirdsrenovations.com">Three Birds Renovations</a> say. Once the look had been finalised, Sophie and Michael spent a year watching their vision come to life – literally! Sophie started the design process with a sketch of their dream family home, which she got a designer to create a 3D render of the final product. From here, the <a href="https://www.threebirdsrenovations.com">Three Birds Renovations</a> team sprayed out the entire house on the ground at full-size so North Mac Constructions could walk through and visualise every inch of the build. North Mac Constructions instantly understood their vision and brought the whole thing to life.

<p>For Sophie and Michael, their vision of a modern Mediterranean villa meets rustic Italian farmhouse was all about carefree, casual living with outdoor influences and touchable textures. Although this was going to be a new home build, the Bells didn’t want the house to feel too modern. “Using render and textured building materials throughout, we have managed to bring that old charm to a brand-new build”, say Three Birds Renovations.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/scyon-axon-cladding">Axon™ Cladding</a> by James Hardie was used extensively throughout the house on all interior ceilings as well as in the interior and exterior of the pool cabana to bring that essential textural element into the build. “We’ve always loved 
<a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/scyon-axon-cladding">Axon™ Cladding</a> , and now Sophie’s got the bug too – she cladded the entire pool cabana (inside and out), all the day beds and even the doors in Axon! We wanted it to feel like a beach bar in Greece – clean, white, rendered and with lots of Axon™ Cladding for texture.”</p>
<p>And the textural elements didn’t stop there. <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/hardiedeck-system">Hardie™ Deck</a> cladding was used around the pool to add even more texture, which, according to Three Birds Renovations “… is an integral part of creating the authentic look of this Mediterranean farmhouse.”</p>
<h2 id="endlesssummer">ENDLESS SUMMER</h2>
<p>Since the Bell family are big on entertaining, Three Birds Renovations had to pay close attention to their outdoor entertaining area. Building an outdoor pool cabana adjacent to the pool gives the family the freedom to entertain with family and friends all year round. <p>Aside from providing stunning textural elements, the Axon™ Cladding and Hardie™ Deck cladding products used throughout the build will stand up to the high moisture rating of the area. Since the property is surrounded by rainforest, moisture is naturally high and could rot traditional timber over time. Axon™ Cladding and <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/hardiedeck-system">Hardie™ Deck</a>, on the other hand, will stand up to the conditions for years to come. Both Axon™ Cladding and <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/hardiedeck-system">Hardie™ Deck</a>are also highly fire-resistant. Axon™ Cladding has a BAL-40 rating and HardieDeck is suitable for use in a BAL 29-rated area, which is the bushfire rating for the Bell’s block.</p>

<p>One year on after working with merely a sketch of their dream home, Sophie and Michael have an incredible oasis to raise their family and entertain visiting family and friends. “Your lifestyle and the way you like to live in your home should always be top of mind when designing your house”, say Three Birds Renovations. With two young kids at home, Sophie and Michael don’t get out as much so they decided to bring the beach bar to their home. They can make cocktails, cook pizzas and watch the kids in the pool – what’s not to love!</p>

Reaching great heights with vertical cladding

<p>Apart from its durability and good looks, one of the things we love most about <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/categories/cladding">James Hardie’s cladding</a> products is the versatility. In our renovations, we’ve installed cladding both horizontally and vertically… and in the case of <a href="https://www.threebirdsrenovations.com/house5">House 5</a>, both ways in the same area!</p>
<p>The vision for our most recent renovation, <a href="https://www.threebirdsrenovations.com/house12">House 12</a>, was to transform a cute but tired little house into a contemporary family home. We used James Hardie external cladding throughout the property to bring interest and detail to spaces, on both the exterior and interior, through the shadow lines created by the cladding, with the common fact that it was installed vertically.</p>
<p>Here’s how we used cladding vertically to help bring our vision to life, inside and out:</p>
<h2 id="exterior">Exterior</h2>
<p>Speak to any real estate agent and they’ll tell you the importance of street appeal. Updating the façade of your home contributes to how much passers-by engage with your home and to the appeal of the entire street. Façade makeovers often inspire neighbours to upgrade their facades too!</p>
<p>One of the first things you notice when you approach <a href="https://www.threebirdsrenovations.com/house12">House 12</a> from the street, is the <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/scyon-stria-cladding">Stria™ Cladding</a>. We believe you’ve only got one chance to make a first impression and the we chose this cladding, along with the tiles, windows (framed in Axent trim) and paint to work together to create the wow factor on the facade of this home.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/scyon-stria-cladding">Stria™ Cladding</a> is a shiplap board, which is like a tongue and groove system where the boards slot into each other. Stria™ Cladding boards are thick and the shiplap joint creates a much wider, deeper and more distinct groove than <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/scyon-axon-cladding">Axon™ Cladding</a>.</p>
<p>We replaced the old windows and wanted to thicken up the frames to make them really pop. Normal window trims are only 65mm wide so we used <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/scyon-axent-trim">Axent trim</a> (89mm x 19mm) to fatten out window and contrast the cladding. This has a perfectly smooth surface and being fibre cement it won’t warp, split or texture in the harsh sun.</p>
<p>Selecting materials for the facade of your home is an important decision, for both aesthetic and practical reasons. We love fibre cement for many reasons:</p>
<ul>
<li>It’s a clever builder material that can be reminiscent of a number of looks (timber or render)</li>
<li>It is light enough to follow the frame and not have to rest its weight on the ground</li>
<li>It nails on to the frame of the home, so it’s easy to install</li>
<li>The cement in the product gives it an enduring nature more like bricks because it’s resistant to fire, rot, termites and damage from moisture.</li>
<li>It gives design flexibility and the ability to be enduring – the perfect ingredients for timeless design.</li>
</ul>
<p>We wanted to take a few years off this old girl’s age to help put the ‘contemporary’ in to contemporary cottage. To do this, we replaced the old timber cladding with <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/scyon-stria-cladding">Stria™ Cladding</a> and installed it vertically rather than horizontally for a smart contemporary look. We love James Hardie exterior cladding products because the fibre cement composition means they are much more durable than timber, meaning less maintenance for our busy homeowners. #notjustgoodlooks</p>
<p>At <a href="https://www.threebirdsrenovations.com/house5">House 5</a>, we created a modern extension on an old cottage, using Stria both horizontally and vertically to define the modern and the traditional. We love the contrast created using the same product, installed differently.</p>
<h2 id="interior">Interior</h2>
<p>Step inside <a href="https://www.threebirdsrenovations.com/house12">House 12</a> and you’ll see that we’ve carried the vertical lines with the installation of <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/scyon-axon-cladding">Axon™ Cladding</a> Smooth on the interior walls. The benefit of using fibre cement vertical groove sheets is that they’re impact resistant, the won’t swell and warp if they get wet or if it’s too humid (perfect for kitchens and laundries!). And they won’t let off any harmful volatile gasses as they’re not made up of glue.</p>
<p>In the same way that vertical stripes on clothes give the illusion of a leaner, taller physique, installing cladding vertically can give make lower ceilings feel higher, too. Aside from the gorgeous detail and layering it provides in the kitchen and bar, we chose to run our Axon cladding from top-to-toe to give the impression of height within this little home.</p>
<p>The clean vertical lines in the Guest Cottage at House 8 takes the feature wall to even greater heights. <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/scyon-axon-cladding">Axon™ Cladding</a> looks like finely crafted tongue and groove boards but it’s actually a precisely engineered and manufactured fibre cement sheet.</p>
