If you didn’t know that House 13 was nestled on the border of the Australian bush, you would swear that the sprawling property was a walk along a hot footpath from the beach. Achieving that Hamptons inspired coastal look – no matter the location – was all in the details for the build by Three Birds Renovations. And their latest project, featuring James Hardie’s range of versatile fibre cement products, used board and batten to create the ultimate relaxed, coastal vibes.&nbsp;
To achieve a cohesive board and batten look, the team used&nbsp;<a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/hardieflex-sheet">Hardie™ Flex Sheets</a> and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/scyon-axent-trim">Axent™&nbsp;Trim</a> by James Hardie. Both products are made from James Hardie fibre cement, making them durable, reliable, and ready for whatever the hard Australian elements bring. &nbsp;
<h2 id="anewstyleforaneyecatchingexterior">A new style for an eye-catching exterior</h2>
Put simply, the board and batten siding style&nbsp;is&nbsp;created by joining wide vertical boards (sheets) with thin vertical strips (battens) to cover the seams. Three Birds&nbsp;used the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/hardieflex-sheet">Hardie™ Flex Sheet</a>, combined with&nbsp;Axent&nbsp;Trim, to create their board and batten look. The result is a look that Lana describes as a “relaxed, coastal holiday” with luxe resort touches.&nbsp;
“We also used&nbsp;<a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/scyon-axent-trim">Axent™&nbsp;Trim</a> around the windows to create a chunky feel,” she says, completing the coastal feel of the exterior finish. &nbsp;

The humble origins of board and batten siding began in the United States, when farmers were looking for a more efficient alternative to traditional log cabins. They were inspired by Scandinavian buildings that were assembled using inexpensive and easy-to-assemble approaches. &nbsp;
Now, it’s a leading design style with a versatility that can work in tandem with other textures and approaches. For example, Three Birds also used signature <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/scyon-linea-weatherboard">Linea™ Weatherboards</a> on House 13’s pool house to keep in with the holistic coastal style.&nbsp;

When building the house, the Three Birds team knew that they needed to choose materials and products that not only looked good, but allowed them to build smarter and build to last.&nbsp;

How Hardie™ Fine Texture Cladding helped transform a 1940s cottage

Plenty of people scroll through Pinterest looking for inspiration. When Jane spotted a thumb stopping build - a house with a cathedral roof that captured the light, painted a deep black, on her app, she thought “I could build that”. And with her husband Matt, she did.
Her idea seemed worlds away from their 1940s cottage sitting on the side of a Wollongong hill. But she knew that she had to do something drastic, as the cold house was unprotected from the elements. It was on the south side of the hill facing south, and had a large tree on the northern side of the house, which restricted the northern light. The house was uninsulated, with small windows and it would routinely get hit by the cold southerly winds - the perfect storm.
The pair didn’t think that all of those problems could be solved. Then help came in the form of design inspiration, a design and construct builder and new <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/hardie-fine-texture-cladding">Hardie™ Fine Texture Cladding</a>, by James Hardie. The material brought style and durability to the home, as well as enabling the lightweight construction of a soaring roof that allows light to flood in.&nbsp;
<h2 id="howapinterestphotosparkedthedream">How a Pinterest photo sparked the dream</h2>
Jane and Matt had gotten to the point where they just wanted to knock their house down and start again. But after taking a look at the options for new home designs, they felt that demolishing and rebuilding their home would be a waste. It would also go against their desire to make decisions with sustainability in mind.
So they engaged their builder, Nick from <a href="https://spanline.com.au/">Spanline</a> Illawarra, who showed them how a renovation could instead make their Pinterest dreams a reality. “Our builder recommended putting in a steeply pitched roof that could let in as much light as possible, and that was when we introduced us to Hardie Fine Texture Cladding,” remembers Jane. “We fell in love straight away, because it had the style and clean lines that we wanted.”

<h2 id="atransformationthroughtexture">A transformation through texture</h2>
<a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/hardie-fine-texture-cladding">Hardie™ Fine Texture Cladding</a> is perfect for modern home designs with that more minimalist feel. Compared with the hard lines of some cladding profiles, the pre-textured fibre cement panel adds visual warmth and diffuses light, while bringing subtle focus to the form of the building. According to Jane, it stood out, when compared to other materials, as “the look is so much better than brick, at a lesser price.”&nbsp;
As with all <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/fibre-cement">fibre cement products</a> by James Hardie, <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/hardie-fine-texture-cladding">Hardie™ Fine Texture Cladding</a> is resilient, and designed to last so you can love where you live longer. And that was a key reason behind Jane and Matt’s choice. “It’s durable and resists cracking, which gives us a lot of peace of mind,” says Jane. Hardie™ Fine Texture cladding is also fire resistant, and can be installed simply by attaching the panels to timber or light gauge steel frames.
The rapid speed of installation makes it a favourite of builders, which is why it was the first choice for Spanline when recommending products. Jane and Matt chose Domino by Dulux for the exterior, which was quick and easy to paint, with fibre cement holding paint for longer than brick or wood. The cladding is also resistant to warping, swelling and rotting, making it ideal for Australian conditions.

<h2 id="lightingitup">Lighting it up</h2>
When figuring out the design for the exterior, Jane and Matt wanted to make a statement. “We didn’t want anything average or boring,” Jane says. “We definitely wanted something bold and modern.” Plus, they wanted to capture all seasons to make the most of the light, especially through the northern sun in winter.&nbsp;
The fine rendered texture of <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/hardie-fine-texture-cladding">Hardie™ Fine Texture Cladding</a> meant that they could achieve, a solid-looking modern home design without the weight or hassle of brickwork. The cladding is likely to be lower maintenance than other cladding that needs to be hand-rendered meaning the render style will stay looking good for many years to come.
Jane and Matt worked with Spanline to design the dramatic vertical aluminium screen, which wraps around the upper windows, contrasting and breaking up the expanse of cladding. The pared-back look is subtly softened with the use of uplights, while still remaining a focal point of design, helping the eye-catching house to build its street appeal.
Another key element of the <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/hardie-fine-texture-cladding">Hardie™ Fine Texture Cladding</a> that was crucial to Jane and Matt’s renovation was its ability to diffuse light and give a modern matte appearance to the Domino paint colour.

From inside, the roof soars, with Jane and Matt taking an open-plan approach to living, all centred around a sun-drenched kitchen island bench. "We just wanted open, airy and light, because you can't have too much light and you can never have enough windows,” says Jane. “Now, light pours in every day, and wherever you look, there’s something to see.”&nbsp;
For a family who were considering demolishing their home, to now living in their Pinterest-perfect home, it took finding the perfect materials to completely change their perspective. “We wanted to turn our 1940s cottage into our dream home, with a minimalist look and clean lines,” says Jane. “Hardie Fine Texture cladding helped us achieve our dream.”

Made from moisture resistant fibre cement, Villaboard Lining provides superior protection&nbsp;for&nbsp; front-of-wall finishes. “The last thing you want is something that will swell or rot or warp,” says Erin.

With&nbsp;Three Birds’&nbsp;ultimate&nbsp;goal&nbsp;being a "worry free reno or build,” having a lining that protects your foundations while still enabling aesthetic design choices by giving a solid and reliable base to work from. &nbsp;

Villaboard Lining is inherently moisture resistant due to the way it is made and won’t rot. “If the worst was to happen in your wet space, and your waterproofing fails,” says Erin, “rest assured: with this Villaboard product installed, you’re in safe hands.” This means that it won’t deform or lose its structural integrity, so you don’t have to plan for rectifications down the line, which take up precious time and can eat into your budget.&nbsp;

Villaboard Lining is thick and sturdy, and unlike plasterboard, it doesn’t need a coating. That strength and protection means it has another feature that outdoes standard plasterboard: it has incredible hanging power. When we’re making design choices for the exterior of our homes, it’s all about how we want the home to look… so we turn to our vision board. As well as looking fabulous, we choose Linea™ Weatherboards for their product credentials. They’re made from fibre cement, a combination of wood fibres, sand and cement which means it is super-durable and won’t warp or swell. It’s also resistant to damage from moisture and termites – all the things that make timber weatherboards look shabby overtime. They’re low maintenance and won’t need to be repainted as soon as timber boards either.
James Hardie’s range of fibre cement products are also bush fire resistant so are suitable for use within fire-rated properties. The thick boards allow for tongue and groove ends, meaning they can be joined without a supporting stud to reduce wastage and cost, making them a great choice for your budget too.
If your vision is for a dark home, like House 9, you can be confident using <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/scyon-linea-weatherboard">Linea™ Weatherboards</a>&nbsp;with dark colours too. The most common alternative to building your home with cladding is to use brick veneer. With brick you’ll lose up to 14cm of internal floor space, right around the perimeter of the house, as brick is a much thicker substrate than cladding. If you’re building a Three Birds Dream Home on a smaller block size, you’ll be thrilled we chose Linea™ Weatherboards instead of bricks because maximises space, giving the homeowners more bang for their buck in their living spaces.

6. Clean lines – Hide busy roof lines with a parapet wall. Maintain clean cladding lines by hiding downpipes and guttering. Purposeful details like exposed beams and rafter tails are fine.

Country meets coast: What’s behind Natalee Bowen’s Toodyay Farmhouse?

In the tucked-away town of Toodyay in Western Australia’s Wheatbelt region, there’s an old 1860s farmhouse defining a new look: the <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/looks/hamptons/australian-hamptons">Australian Hamptons home</a>. Renovated by internationally renowned Natalee Bowen – of <a href="https://indahisland.com/">Indah Island</a> fame – this remarkable property perfectly marries country and coast for a home like no other.
Here, Natalee shares her insights on what made this transformation so special – from the façade to the feel, the colours to the products used. Let’s find out what makes this farmhouse so special.

<h2 id="findingahomefortheaustralianhamptonslook">FINDING A HOME FOR THE AUSTRALIAN HAMPTONS LOOK</h2>
A 19th century farmhouse set in the remote West Australian Wheatbelt region is probably the last place you’d expect to find a defining style of home. But that’s exactly what you get from the phenomenal <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/blog/defining-australian-hamptons-natalee-bowens-toodyay-farm-renovation/">Toodyay Farmhouse</a>.
Turning a rundown building into a house that truly feels like a home is challenging at the best of times. Luckily, the farmhouse once belonged to the great grandfather of Natalee Bowen’s husband – and Natalee was the perfect design expert for such a massive renovation project.

 “We wanted to keep this build quite simple and structured, while at the same time highlighting things like the beautiful vaulted ceiling and feature walls,” Natalee says. “Paying homage back to the original building was always forefront in our minds.”

As arguably Australia’s foremost Hamptons expert, it’s unsurprising that Natalee chose to incorporate many of those classic elements into her farmhouse build – but with an Australian twist. Incorporating details such as a wide veranda and large open windows that highlight the magnificent view really made this space feel like home.

<h2 id="thefaadeandthecolours">THE FAÇADE AND THE COLOURS</h2>
What makes this renovation so unique is the differences Natalee incorporated between the <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/looks/hamptons/traditional-hamptons">traditional American Hamptons</a> style and her own spin on Australian Hamptons. It all starts with the façade.

 <li>“The way that we’ve imported what we used as a shingle – in contrast to the classic American home – is the <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/scyon-linea-weatherboard">Linea™ Weatherboard</a>,” Natalee says. “It has that beautiful weatherboard look with streamlined elegance, but it’s more durable than an American wood shingle that’s typically aged to be grey.”

 The colourways of a Hamptons-style home in Australia are also moving beyond the standard derivative tones – and for Natalee’s Toodyay reno, she took that idea to the next level.</li>
 <li>“The Australian Hamptons look now incorporates colours that are quite out there,” she says. “Dark colours like navy and black contrast against whites – it’s quite a heavy approach to the colourways rather than the softer American approach of greys and soft blues.”*</li>

Compounding the differences of an Australian Hamptons look, the Toodyay Farmhouse delivers a striking Queenslander vibe thanks to its open-air, wrap-around verandah that draws the eye towards massive floor-to-ceiling windows. Chippendale balustrades stand out against a colour palette that mixes Hamptons with Boho. Then there are additions like the simple large gables and charming verandah seating that really makes this build feel like home.

Tips for a Hamptons-style Outdoor Room with Natalee Bowen

With boundless coastlines, a breathtaking outback, sightseeing for days, and year-round agreeable weather, it’s no wonder Australia has a love affair with our land down under. With outdoor living playing such an intrinsic part of the Australian lifestyle, it only makes sense that one of our favourite home design styles embraces all that is beautiful about the great outdoors. <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/hamptons-look">Hamptons style</a> combines comfort, elegance, and natural surrounds in one highly covetable design trend, and Australia can’t get enough.
To get the scoop on all things Hamptons outdoor style, we sat down with a professional designer and Hamptons expert, Natalee Bowen.
<h2 id="outdoorbuildings">OUTDOOR BUILDINGS</h2>
To wholeheartedly embrace Hamptons style is to wholeheartedly embrace the great outdoors, and what better way to do this than by adding one or two outdoor buildings to your design scheme. For design expert, Natalee, “Hamptons style is all about creating the summer resort style of living. An alfresco kitchen, outdoor pool and adjacent pool house, or something as simple as large sliding doors that open up your home to the backyard are all ideal for creating a complete outdoor entertaining space. You want to feel like your home is a holiday destination all year round,” she adds.

Whether you’re working with an interior or exterior, Hamptons style is all about intricate structures. If you include a covered verandah in your design scheme, consider adding a pitched gable roof to keep in line with the traditional look of Hamptons style roofing, advises Natalee. Don’t forget to include that quintessential weatherboard look on the exterior of your verandah or outdoor room with <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/scyon-linea-weatherboard">Linea™ Weatherboard</a>. The devil is all in the detail when creating a Hamptons outdoor room, verandah or complementary structures such as balustrades, eaves, cupolas, and arbours. “Australian’s are continually being drawn to more elegant and sophisticated design elements”, says Natalee. This can be adopted with upstairs balconies and detailed balustrades. “Vertical or crisscrossed timber balustrades in calming whites or a contrasting shade is one of those classic architectural details that adds a touch of elegance to a Hamptons home”, says Natalee. While there’s no denying that the elegance of Hamptons style immediately draws eyes upwards to features like weatherboard and impressive roofing, it pays to focus on embellishments below your feet as well. For Natalee, a Hamptons style floor is all about wooden flooring. “If you’re dressing the floors in your outdoor room, I love wide oak floorboards in either an American mocha shade or stained dark oak to create an open and breezy flow to the rest of the house.”

If you’re laying flooring outdoors in an entryway or driveway, stone is a popular choice for Hamptons style. “Natural textures like stone work wonders in a Hamptons style home because you’re once again bringing in that natural element”, says Natalee. “Using natural materials such as stone is also a great way to bring in the Hamptons colour palette of whites, neutrals and greys”, she adds.
<h2 id="alfrescoaccents">ALFRESCO ACCENTS</h2>
When it comes to creating Hamptons style with your alfresco accents, “The key words are timeless elegance”, says Natalee. “Many homeowners get confused between Hamptons and beachy or Hamptons and country,” she adds. To avoid zigzagging between contrasting design styles and staying true to <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/looks/hamptons/traditional-hamptons">traditional Hamptons style</a>, Natalee advises focusing on texture and colour palette. “A soothing colour scheme of pastels, all-white or soft grey that takes inspiration from the ocean along with natural materials like rattan and timber will bring an instant feeling of freshness to your home.” When choosing décor or furniture items for your verandah, always opt for natural materials such as timber cabinetry or cane chairs.

Another common misjudgement when creating a Hamptons style décor scheme is confusing coastal charm with coastal kitsch by over-decorating. To combat this, Natalee recommends pairing back on your décor items and only bringing in natural elements with jute or sisal rugs, a shell or two here and there, and pops of colour with plants and linen cushions. If you really want to make a bold splash in your verandah or outdoor room, you can’t go wrong with a beaded chandelier.
