The remarkable Scandinavian-inspired home, designed by <a href="https://www.invilla.com.au/">Invilla Architecture</a>, and built by Warren Jones and his team at Innovative Design and Build Group, took inspiration from the simple silhouettes and well-defined lines of <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/modern-look">modern design</a> through the diverse use of textures and material palette. The contrasting claddings accentuate the home’s architectural elements while creating a cohesive, contemporary aesthetic. <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/categories/cladding/hardie-fine-texture-cladding">Hardie™ Fine Texture Cladding</a> wraps the ground floor, whilst <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/categories/cladding/scyon-linea-weatherboard">Linea™ Weatherboard</a> features on the first storey’s exterior. Linea™ Weatherboard was specified in the plans while Hardie™ Fine Texture Cladding, which Warren had used on one previous project, was chosen to meet the generic render finish specified, notes Warren, while also appreciating the savings on build costs. “Traditional render on blue board poses significant challenges if the blue board isn’t installed correctly. With Hardie™ Fine Texture Cladding, the joins are seamless and we know that there won’t be any issues from a poor rendering job.”

A Striking Façade That Embodies the Beauty of Soft Industrial Design 

<h2 id="theperfectantidotetosuburbanubiquity">The Perfect Antidote to Suburban Ubiquity</h2>
Dave and Bindi Riley loved the location of their well-worn, Gymea Bay house in Sydney’s Sutherland Shire. Their children were settled into the area and the family had a tight knit social network close-by. But their home was in desperate need of repair.

The logical solution for the Riley’s was to <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/renovations">renovate</a>, but rather than undertake a simple renovation, they worked with Catherine Heraghty at interior design studio <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/partnerships/the-stables">The Stables</a> to devise a complete overhaul of the property. This included a new floor plan, new bathrooms and kitchen and reimagined outside areas that were fit for an active family of four.

The Riley’s had a clear vision for the design inspiration of their home. They wanted something different to the plethora of <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/hamptons-look">Hamptons</a>-inspired houses seen in The Shire and loved the appeal of a more <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/modern-look">modern</a> industrial look.
“Dave and Bindi were keen to have a design that felt industrial but still modern, so we started preparing the concept. We wanted something that didn’t feel too strong or harsh for the landscape. I would say we landed on a ‘soft industrial’ concept – <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/partnerships/the-stables">The Stables</a>’ version of modern industrial style,” Catherine said.

Soft industrial has all the strong, masculine elements of industrial design but it is balanced with softer finishes that prevents it from overpowering a space. The home was designed with a purposeful modernity – the soft industrial aesthetic was anchored by the Riley’s need for a robust house that would stand up to the needs of a young, active family.
This was Catherine’s first foray into <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/blog/Talking%20Scandi%20Barn%20with%20Catherine%20from%20The%20Stables">designing a façade</a>, so it made sense to her to use materials she was familiar and therefore more confident with.
“We used <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/hardie-fine-texture-cladding">Hardie™ Fine Texture Cladding</a> on the entire exterior for its subtlety and durability. The smooth natural sand texture of the product allowed for the stronger, more industrial elements of the façade such as the timber posts and black balustrade to standout as features while softening the overall look,” explained Catherine.

However, the overriding consideration for the façade design was <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/blog/outside-in-exteriors-and-the-importance-of-first-appearances">street appeal</a> and ensuring that the house was interesting enough but did not feel disjointed in the overall streetscape.
“It is a very unique looking home and we designed it that way, but it also needed to look like it belonged in its own street, so it was important that we struck a balance between the stronger industrial and more subtle design elements,” Catherine said.
“I’m a designer who relies heavily on texture to create a sense of warmth and interest and <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/hardie-fine-texture-cladding">Hardie™ Fine Texture Cladding</a> added just enough interest without detracting from the main features. It really was key to perfecting the soft-industrial look,” she added.

When choosing colours for the façade, Catherine and her team were able to play with the effects of the changing light throughout the day to really showcase the softness that the cladding provided.
“We painted three large samples of the pre-primed cladding, sat it on-site and viewed it at different times of the day to see how the light affected the colour in the morning, afternoon and evening,” Catherine explained.
“It’s so important to understand that colour can behave differently throughout the day, we held the painted samples against other finishes on the exterior to ensure everything felt harmonious. We wouldn’t have had the opportunity to sample colours so comprehensively if we hadn’t used Hardie™ Fine Texture Cladding,” she added.

The entire build took six months to complete and both the Riley’s and Catherine were extremely pleased with the outcome. What they achieved was the result of a clear design vision, the courage to stand out from their suburban status quo and the use of the right materials and colours.

A 1930’s weatherboard beach shack has been transformed into a relaxed holiday haven with enough room to accommodate family and friends. Living next door to a sibling may not be everyone’s cup of tea however, sisters Alexandra and Gemma recognised the benefits of creating a forever home to accommodate both their families far outweighed the negative. With the affordability of housing in Sydney on the decline and rising financial costs, the sisters started to explore alternative options and struck upon the idea of duplex living. Increasing their buying power by joining forces was not the only motivator, the sisters realised it was an opportunity to create new memories together as an extended family living side-by-side. With an art to finding balance when using three distinct Hardie™ exterior cladding profiles, this home is perfect inspiration, showing an easy way to build layers of texture and design features for a façade.

The Great Ocean Reno: A seamless integration of modern coastal design with original '30s charm

When Lucy Glade-Wright, Designer at Hunting for George and her husband Jonno Rodd decided to renovate, their vision was to transform a 1930s weatherboard beach shack on The Great Ocean Road, Lorne Victoria, into a relaxed holiday haven with enough room to accommodate their family and friends.

No strangers to renovations; not only did they artfully restore the home, but they added an impressive extension turning it into a five-bedroom, five-bathroom Beach House fit for purpose.
“We’ve renovated a few houses now, but this was definitely our biggest project,” said Lucy.

According to Jonno, the exterior transformation of the build needed to reflect a modern coastal design that complemented the existing home and its environment. They also wanted to future-proof the home to make it more efficient.
“Part of the exterior design requirements from council were to preserve the look of the existing building. The top half of the exterior had somewhat flat panelling, while the lower half had standard weatherboards. So, to get a modern look with the softness and charm of the original home we used <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/categories/cladding/hardie-fine-texture-cladding">Hardie™ Fine Texture Cladding</a> on the upper level and <a href="https://www.jameshardie.com.au/productrange/categories/cladding/scyon-linea-weatherboard">Linea™ Weatherboards</a> below, both by James Hardie,” said Jonno.

Lucy and Jonno chose Hardie™ Fine Texture Cladding for the upper level of the Beach House because of its lightweight composition which makes the product incredibly easy to install and maintain.
The bush setting and close proximity to the unforgiving elements of the ocean meant that the exterior finishes not only had to look amazing, but they also needed to be fit for purpose, low maintenance and durable.

 Jonno explains, “We are in a BAL29 fire rating area, so it was very important to use materials that are resistant to fire and comply with the National Construction Code… The home is also close to the ocean and exposed to a lot of different weather conditions, so the main consideration for us in addition to fire ratings was longevity. Linea™ Weatherboards by James Hardie combines the durability and low maintenance of fibre cement with the design flexibility to achieve your vision. By using the Hardie™ exterior cladding products, we got the best of both worlds", he said.

Lucy’s background in interiors and design meant that the couple had a very clear idea on what they wanted in terms of the design and functionality of the house. They had an architect work on the basic drawings for council approval and added assurance they were adhering to the council’s guidelines. Beyond that, Jonno and Lucy managed the entire build themselves.
Jonno said, “The whole process was fairly straightforward, my brother works in construction management, so he helped me manage timelines as well as working on the tools with Lucy and I”. 
Lucy painted most of the façade on her own and had just three days to paint the exterior before the scaffolding had to come down.

"The Linea™ Weatherboards were fantastic to paint because they didn't require any prep-work; they come pre-primed, and all of the nail holes are hidden because the boards layer over each other. All I had to do was make sure they were clean, and I could paint straight over the top of them, saving me lots of valuable time,” Lucy explained.
"When it comes to creating a modern coastal colour palette it's all about fresh whites and classic greys, so we combined Tranquil Retreat Dulux Weathershield on both the Linea™ Weatherboards and Hardie™ Fine Texture CLadding and Natural White Dulux Aquanamel on the window frames", said Lucy.

The project took 12 months to complete, and the end result is a seamless combination of modern coastal features and original charm.

Neil Hipwell, Australia’s leading design builder and Founder of FutureFlip says there is a lot to consider when thinking about the design aesthetic of your home’s façade. “The façade of your home is a representation of you in your neighbourhood and the first impression for your visitors,” he explains. 
However, Neil says the exterior of your home is much more than just a pretty face – there are practical elements that the exterior needs to provide. “The exterior is also there to protect your home and your family from the elements, and to provide thermal insulation.” 
Given that the exterior of the home has such an important role to play in any renovation plan, it’s vital that your builder understands your overall design vision. 
The easiest way to convey your vision is by creating a mood board. Maria Cerne, Founder of Canberra-based design and styling practice Studio Black Interiors, says a mood board will help you collate your ideas into one cohesive look that can be shared with your builder. You can create your mood board online via a platform like <a href="https://stylesourcebook.com.au/">Style Sourcebook</a> or you can use inspiration from magazines and catalogues.
Maria’s top tips for creating a façade mood board are:
<h3 id="thinkaboutyourexteriorstyle">Think about your exterior style</h3>
How do you want your house to feel – do you picture it making a strong visual statement or blending into the neighbourhood? Should it be modern coastal, box modern, Hamptons-inspired or even ScandiBarn?
<h3 id="consideryourhomeslocation">Consider your homes location</h3>
Are you in the city, the suburbs, a rural or coastal setting? These different environments can inspire your colour and finish choices.
<h3 id="pickyourtrio">Pick your trio</h3>
This is a good rule of thumb to keep in mind of terms of finishes. The idea is to have a trio of main finishes or colours. This may be mix of feature wall cladding styles like James Hardie Linea™ Weatherboard, Axon and Hardie™ Fine Texture Cladding. Base colours should be used on the largest areas of your exteriors such as the walls, roof and the garage door, while accent colours are used on smaller areas such as windows, trims and your front door. 
<h3 id="editandrefine">Edit and refine</h3>
Maria says, “Look at what is working and what isn’t, and make changes to the mood board until it feels cohesive Try not to use too many colours and finishes on your exterior – less is generally more.”
Now that your vision is clear and your builder knows exactly what look you’re trying to achieve, it’s time to consider the finer details of your façade.

“When it comes to designing a great façade, it’s important to get the symmetry right. Either use a completely symmetrical design or play with the proportions just make sure to keep the overall look balanced,” says Neil.

“Less design is good design, we recommend avoiding things like patterns, bold colours and harsh shapes. Instead, create a modern façade by choosing to create a sense of texture through your material choices,” he explains.

“When choosing your exterior materials go for something with long-term benefits. We like the range of cladding by James Hardie as not only is it bush-fire and termite-safe, the fibre-cement formulation is created to withstand Australian conditions and won’t warp, twist or rot.”

<h3 id="verticalorhorizontal">Vertical or horizontal?</h3>
“If you are going for cladding, think about whether you after a vertical or horizontal design. James Hardie has a wide range of products that can give the look of timber or render, so the design possibilities are endless,” says Neil.
“Cladding is a great choice as it’s quick and easy to install, and it lends itself to different types of design features that can be more difficult to achieve when working with brick.”

<h3 id="thefinishingtouches">The finishing touches</h3>
“Think about the finishing touches to your exterior design like windows, window trims, door hardware, lighting, outdoor flooring like tiles and even your letterbox and house numbers. Also, well considered landscaping will make a huge difference to your façade,” he said.

Named Hart House, a reference to Mrs Hart who named Riverdale Grove in Launceston, this new build project on a sub-divided block in Launceston delivered simplicity and minimalism to owner Nathan Karas and his daughters. A teacher by trade, Nathan wanted to take on a new creative challenge, and started the journey to designing a spacious new home for his family.

“I wanted to maximise the block and utilise internal and external space as much as possible, give the illusion of light, and ensure all rooms enjoyed a view,” said Nathan. 
Inspired by British architect John Poulson, Nathan wanted to deliver a modern home featuring minimalist design which connected the indoor and outdoor seamlessly. “I am a big fan of exteriors and got a lot of inspiration from Pinterest,” said Nathan. Developing mood boards, Nathan began with ten images of each room he was planning which he then filtered down to a few favourites before sending them to his designer.

With input from Nathan, Hart House was designed by S. Group architect Josh Upston. Josh proposed exterior cladding products by James Hardie as ideal to achieve the brief and design. Hardie™ Fine Texture Cladding has been used on the front façade, while Linea™ Weatherboards have been used at the back of the house. Hardie™ Fine Texture Cladding has also been used on the front fence, providing privacy to the home’s entrance courtyard, and continuing the clean lines of the garage and home behind it. While the footprint of the house fills the sub-divided block, with small pockets for courtyards, the home doesn’t feel restricted due to an abundance of natural light from windows and strategically -placed sky lights in bathrooms and bedrooms.

3D images and renders of the house sold Nathan on the use of Hardie™ Fine Texture Cladding, and as construction took place, Nathan grew in appreciation of the product, especially enjoying its versatility when it came to potential colour schemes, with white and black tones working perfectly with the design.

“Working with Josh was very easy,” said Nathan. Nothing was too difficult, including moving rooms around to ensure the best use of space.” Local builder Paul Mackenzie, was given the freedom to interpret Josh’s design and make suggestions. “It was a great working relationship; Paul was trusted entirely and treated my house like his.”
The entire build took approximately six months, and Nathan notes that the quick and easy installation of Hardie™ Fine Texture Cladding was a major contributor to the fast build time. “The clean-up process was also minimised due to the use of cladding instead of brick, and the end result is visually stunning,” said Nathan. “I appreciate the durability of Hardie™ Fine Texture Cladding and how implementing colour schemes can be easily done, by painting directly onto the cladding’s pre-textured surface. Hardie™ Fine Texture Cladding fits in with the simplicity brief and contrasts perfectly with the landscaping,” said Nathan.

Nathan thoroughly enjoyed the experience of building his new family home, with his ideas translated into beautiful spaces. “The process wasn’t too stressful and I had a good team around me.” For those seeking to undertake a new build, he suggests following your heart to deliver something that will add value. “Take the time to research and discuss the project and be comfortable with your designer/architect and builder. It’s ideal to be budget conscience and be aware of costs, but maintain enough flexibility to allow for changes and getting what you want.”

Exploring Scandi Barn Style and Design with Catherine from The Stables

We recently spoke to Catherine Heraghty, the owner and Creative Director of The Stables, to get her tips and insights on the Scandi Barn Style and the design process that leads her to achieving her vision.
Known for her soft and muted colour palette, Catherine focuses on clean lines and natural light. She seamlessly adapts to many styles to assist her clients reaching their design goals. Proving neutrals to be anything but boring, she makes the most of natural materials by layering texture and patterns to add depth and warmth to each and every room. Catherine had the task to design a moodboard and then create a vision of how she wanted her dream façade to look. Catherine found the moodboard helpful in narrowing down her material choices and found it gave her clarity when her vision appeared in form of a render.

The Scandi Barn style inspired facade is something we are seeing more and more of in the Australian residential market, it’s an Australian contemporary take on a Scandinavian Farmhouse look. It’s key design features would be clean lines, a gabled roof with a lack of eaves, cladding, simple exterior finishes, an emphasis on subtle texture and a contemporary colour palette featuring contrast.

<h2 id="whatdoyoufindmostdifficultwhendesigningafacade">What do you find most difficult when designing a facade?</h2>
Designing a façade is actually a little out of our comfort zone, we are traditionally focussed on all things interiors. Without fail however, we always end up consulting on something to do with the exterior in all of our projects, so we have picked up more confidence and experience as the years have gone by! I would say the most difficult thing when designing a façade is considering all of the different elements and ensuring that they work together. There are so many different decisions from roof colour, exterior cladding selections, driveway finishes and window colours. The list is long!
